  • I have one of these. Makes good espresso, though the weight of the machine is a bit wack - the whole thing will move when locking in the portafilter.

    • Is the steaming wand any good on this model?

      • +1

It does the job. Works well with non-dairy milks too.

$279 at Good Guys, and even cheaper on Amazon.

this is the rrp, no? the dedica generally need to be under 200 to be considered a deal imo.

Aren't these usually $200 and under?

    • +1

Agreed the post isn't cheap but a reminder that David Jones does price matching and you can get discounts on gift cards

  • Normal price for these has been $299 at The Good Guys for ever. I picked one up for $180 when on sale.

  • $249 at Good Guys Commercial (link works if you have access - I signed up via Sunsuper myself):

Very good machine, love mine, got for like $120 from amazon years back. Can recommend getting an unpressurised portafilter as well, means you can grind much finer

These things went up - got my 685W for $101 from Amazon. Use it every day - works well. Combined with Breville Smart Grinder

    Good points

    • Illuminated push buttons are located at the top of the unit, and are easy to operate. • Volumetric controls. • Adjustable drip tray.

    Bad points

    • Steam wand is short in length & does not extend far enough away from the unit, which makes it difficult to get a good angle for frothing milk.
    • Reverse end of measuring spoon is used as a tamper & can be difficult for users to apply controlled pressure.
    • Need to take care when emptying coffee puck as filter basket and/or perforated filter can come loose.
    • No milk jug supplied and a maximum of 60 seconds to deliver steam (Instruction manual).
    • Boiler has to be flushed after frothing milk to make coffees again.
    • Requires two hands to insert/remove the portafilter, one to hold the unit the other to move the portafilter.
    • Can't accommedate larger cups.
    • Brushed stainless steel exterior requires extra effort when cleaning, shows fingerprint marks.

    • Can agree with most of those bad points - but all pretty minor. Nothing that has really bothered me much except for not accommodating larger cups. Normally I take off the silver base when putting the larger cup.

    • Agreed. Plus I like the auto-off.

Provided tamper is rubbish and will snap in half soon enough. But kinda moot because you don't need to tamper with provided pressurised baskets. Only if you get a unpressurised one…

  • I bought one of these on Amazon for $150 few months ago. Good machine for 1 person.

Thought I'd post this link as someone else posted it when I bought mine and it was very useful:
    http://toolsandtoys.net/guides/making-the-most-of-the-delong…

I highly recommend upgrading the portafilter and/or basket. I bought a non-pressurised basket for the Delonghi portafilter and also a new portafilter that came with the non-pressurised basket.

I will upgrade the steam wand (once I have approval from my wife as it involves pulling the machine apart).

I bought one of these from David Jones on ebay when they were 189 or on eBay late June this year.
It is turning out to be a bit of a long term project*

Immediately I purchased this naked portafilter (which fingers crossed includes the unpressurised basket) and this 51mm tamper on AliExpress (still waiting for them to turn up)

Later on I purchased this Rancilio Silvia steam wand which took only a week or so to turn up.

If the aliexpress stufff has no basket I will order this unpressurised basket from amazon.

I installed the steam wand following this youtube video - I did not have the torx screwdriver with the holes to get at the anti tamper screws on the bottom, but found the medium sized Wiha flatblade worked in them just fine (with care).
Tools needed - Torx hollow, flatblade (for torx and the steam wand fastener) and phillips head screwdrivers, Long nose pliers for hose clamps and earth clips, be careful with the power switch in sliding the assembly out, double check all earths reconnected before reconnecting.
(note: this voids all warranty and you should not attempt if you are unfamiliar with repairing mains powered electrical appliances)

Taking apart the Dedica to install the steam wand I noticed the thermoblock is actually one of the newer thermocoil designs, with what could be an integrated temperature probe on the exit (but could also just be a thermostat switch - need to investigate further) so I am hoping the thermal control is more sophisticated than just a dumb thermostat (i.e. PID control which is spoiled by the long uninsulated tube between the thermocoil exit and the brewhead).

Notes so far: The location of the thermocoil exit is a fair distance from the brew head, so the connecting tubes may be able to be better insulated to better control the brew temperature in another future project, as well as adding in PID if it is needed.

So you spent another $100 on the machine already.

Appreciate I can't immediately refer to a better ~$300 alternative but seems a bit of a mess around.

      • +1

Yeah - for me it is something to do in lockdown at home a research project as well.
Besides I had the eBay plus $50 voucher, so the dedica ended up being $139 so it wasnt too expensive.
I have the 920 but it is hissing steam again internally and will need to either go in for a service or I will need to brush up on o-ring changes. Either way it will be offline for at least two weeks, and I was getting this one ready to take over during that time.

I purchased the same portafilter from a different Aliexpress seller and it came with an unpressurised basket. However it was narrower than the included baskets and my 51mm tamp jams. Currently awaiting a 49mm tamp to rectify but even with the plastic scoop/tamp (which jams but then flexes) the improvement with an unpressurised basket is substantial.

Have not bothered with the steam wand upgrade as I drink espresso only. Using a Breville Smart Grinder alongside.

      • What benefit do you get from an unpressurised basket? Can you link to the final working products?

        • For benefits, review the Tools & Toys link @animal posted above which has detail and videos. It essentially comes down to better looking and much clearer tasting espresso than the fake cream and insipid coffee from the pressurised filter.

The portafilter and basket is here, and the 49mm tamp here.

I just cut the bottom of the pressurised baskets off with a dremel. Works a treat. Best machine <$300. I have paired this with a Baratza sette 270i. Grinder was double the price of the machine.

      • great idea

    • bought one of these from David Jones on ebay when they were 189 or on eBay late June this year.

How? DJs don't have an eBay store.

The tamper and naked portafilter turned up today.
As @tplen1 said the 51mm tamper gets jammed in the unpressurised basket due to the draft angle.
On the plus side, the draft angle makes the spent puck fall out fairly easily without having to use the knock box.
Extraction looks good - tested with Aldi medium beans SmartGrinder adjusted from 1-2 (BES920) to setting 5 for reasonable extraction. 15g in 37g out around 25s. crema looks ok
I will try on setting 4 aiming for around 33-35g out in 30s
      I can work with this.

      • Actually dialed it in further finer 1 step 17g in and 36g out 30s

  • I used to own one. Bought a used one for $50 dollars, threw away the original basket and bought a bottomless portafilter and non-pressurised baskets. Paired it with a breville smart grinder and it made good espresso. One trick to get the steam wand works better is to remove the cover, tip type the robber inner steam wand (or however you call it) and steam milk like this. You will then gain control of how much air mixed into the milk and achieve micro form.

  • Just a heads up - If you want to steam milk with the black silicon inner wand - after removing the metal tube, the black silicon wand can pop off under the steam pressure, which makes a bit of a mess and can potentially cause steam burn etc.
As the inner wand is quite short it is may not work with some milk jugs.
It flew off the second time I tried this, blasting the wand into the milk and made a bit of a mess.
You may want to work out a way to secure it.
