Yarra Valley Water - Drinking Water Advice

Drinking water advice (https://www.yvw.com.au/drinking-water-advice)

We’ve become aware of a potential water quality issue affecting 88 suburbs due to electrical damage caused by storms overnight.

These power outages have resulted in some water entering our drinking water supply system and customer taps that had not been treated to the usual standard. Power has now returned and the initial issue has been addressed, however undisinfected water is still within some areas.

If you live in the suburbs below, as a precaution we advise you to bring tap water to a rolling boil before using for drinking, brushing your teeth, food preparation, preparing baby formula, making ice or bathing infants.

Until we can guarantee that the water is safe to drink again, we ask customers to boil their water.

We are working closely with the Department of Health and Human Services and Melbourne Water, who own and manage Silvan Dam, to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
We expect water supply to be back to normal later today (Friday 28 August).  We will provide updates on this page.

Our teams are working around the clock to address this issue.

    Where's the bargain?

    • +17

Potential health warning / saving you from many issues = Bargain

      Price in title

    • +3

If you drink the water you might get a free sicky with some intermittent leakage.
Some might see the value in that.

      from blurb in the link
      "EMERGENCY DRINKING WATER IS AVAILABLE
We are working to ensure that emergency drinking water is available to those who need it. If you have special needs and require assistance, please contact us on 13 2762."

presume free clean water possibly bottled great for babies to avoid any possibility of contamination

Needs a [PSA] amendment in the title.

Is it just me or their website currently under scheduled maintenance. Doesn’t seem the best timing…

  • Almost third-world

      Almost Flint Michigan.

I get sms when there’s water issues in my area, but why the hell didn’t YVW send out an sms about this?!?!

    • +1

I got a vic emergency alert for it.

Its a melbourne water issue, as they supply the water. YVW only look after the pipes to deliver the water.

Site has been Ozbargained! ("Our website is not available at the moment. We're working hard to get back online as soon as possible.")

A boil water alert, fairly standard when water is out of CCP spec, or can't be certified as meeting ADWG standards for potable water. Systems should tell everyone who need to know about it, but thanks for sharing with the rest of oz OP! :)

If you drink it anyway, better hope you've still got your loo roll stockpile! :)

People in those areas will need to shower with their masks on too, so they don't breathe in contaminated droplets.

    • Isn’t that water boarding?

      • +3

No, water boarding isn't until we move to "stage 5" restrictions.

      • +2

        Enhanced bathing.

Yarra water should provide discounts on next bill for not delivering their product as per agreement?

Best thing I ever bought was a water filtration system. It saves so much money. Brita has tap attachments, jugs and exercise bottles. People could have a very inexpensive storage of water and avoid this whole thing when it comes to consumption! People should have learnt to prep by now, but sadly, again and again, I note they're not. I had a year's worth of toilet paper, while watching people hitting each other trying to get some. What are people going to do if ebola and a storm hits?

    • If you hoard a year's worth of toilet paper.. You don't need a water filter.

With the drinking water issue… You might get gastro.. but you have enough TP… So no need to worry about water quality
