    "Note: Requires professional installation."

Feels somewhat irresponsible for a general consumer retailer to be selling these if they don't bundle together with installation. Wish they did negotiate some kind of installation deal then I'd be interested.

    • +9

No more irresponsible than selling ovens, a/c units, heaters, taps etc etc. that require prof install.

I’m sure TGG would happily bundle you up a deal with wiring if possible, and make a cut it the process, but it’s probably not in your best interest.

  • +21

Make sure get an electrician to turn off electricity, unscrew the two screws holding your existing power point, undo the wires from old and attach matching colours on new and then screw back to wall.

    • +3

I get your point, but it's worth noting that you can't do that with these switches. They require a neutral wire, so the wiring configuration won't match an existing non-smart switch.

      • +2

You also won’t get a “Certificate of Electrical Safety”, which may be a problem later for insurance purposes.

      • My house has neutrals at the switch. Most do I believe.

Definitely something to check before you buy though. Big $$ install if they’re not there.

        • My house was built in 1997 and DOES NOT have neutrals at the switches. I actually think most don't. It would have had to be a conscious design consideration when they built the house. I don't know if it's become standard more recently but if the house wasn't initially smart wired then, no the house won't have a neutral.

When I had to get 2 WEMO switches installed my sparkie had to wire in a neutral from in the roof somewhere (don't ask I don't know).

          • @Ramrunner: My current house is 1984 and the previous 2001. Both with neutrals and neither ‘premium’ builds so I figure they’re reasonably common at least.

          • @Ramrunner: That seems very odd. Is it just your lights that dont have neutral or all your power points as well?
Ive renovated houses that have dated back to before 1900s and they have all had neutral fitted either when built or when they pulled all the cloth covered stuff out.

            • @audumla: All the power points have 3 core, only the lights are all 2 core.

Am I getting confused with terminology here? Probably.

Look, I know IT - not electrical (I know I probably should). A standard light switch at my place has two wires going to it, the Wemo required 3. Whether that is a Neutral, Earth, Ground, whatever I'm not sure the correct terminology, but the sparkie had to run a third wire up to the roof to make it all work.

Maybe it's ground I'm thinking of?

              Sorry for any confusion.

@Ramrunner: you're thinking of the neutral.

A dumb switch doesn't need a neutral as it mechanically switches the active of the light circuit. A smart switch requires constant power for it's smarts and switching, so both active and neutral are needed.

The inclusion of neutral at the switch has been fairly common practice since forever so it's certainly not a case of a house being 'smart wired' like you stated above.

Your comment and dtgolds are not entirely wrong, but they are very misleading.

                • @watts: Fair call - but if "Since forever" means before 1997 - why would my Ross North house not have one do you think? 23 years ago?

Just dodgy building then? Don't get me wrong wouldn't surprise me the amount of other issues we've had.

                  • +1

@Ramrunner: Less copper and easier. Not dodgy and not a problem, until you try and install a smart switch.

              • +1

@Ramrunner: Yeah its not uncommon to have only 2 core for lights which means that if there is no adjacent power point or mains power then you'll need to run a neutral somehow which is a pain.
Terminology is fine, Im not a sparky either but studied elec eng.

  • Do these work with Home Assistant?

    • Looks like you can flash tasmota/esphome on them:
      https://templates.blakadder.com/connect_smarthome_CSH-SWTCH2…

This is a really good price. If I didn't already buy and install DETA switches, I would've gone with this.

      • How are the deta switches?

They’d be better for me because I need some 4 gang, and all my switches are ‘landscape’ orientation. These ones would be weird installed sideways.

        • same
I wonder if the camera is good for 50 bucks since it's local warranty

        • The deta switches are pretty good. Just had them installed yesterday and they're working perfectly.

          • @malcom: Are you using them via Homekit?

          • @malcom: @malcom: Are you using them via Homekit?

        • I've got a few installed and very happy with them. But it's annoying that there's no physical switch, so you always have to look at the switch to make sure you're putting your finger in the right spot. It doesn't sound like a big deal, but I didn't realise how much I rely on just feeling for the switch.
A physical rocker like this would be better. But like you, I needed landscape orientation.

          • +1

@dtgold: I’ve paired mine with motion sensors which will automatically turn the lights on (and off when there’s no motion after a delay). So I haven’t really noticed the lack of tactile feedback. But I see your point that it would be a bit annoying if you were relying on the button.

    • You can definitely install Tasmota on them. Very easy to disassemble and flash using Tasmotiser.

      • yep Tasmota works but Homekit binary doesn't work. Actually the only binary that I found working is tasmota.bin

or I am doing something wrong

  • Would the dimensions of the 2 gang switches be same as this https://www.bunnings.com.au/hpm-vivo-2-gang-wall-switch-no-c…?

  • I bought https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/556352 but haven't installed it as yet, specifically for the smart things integration.

Be interesting to see the functional differences between the 2 devices with their integration.

  • Great deal. I’m wondering how I can use these if all my switches are mounted horizontally not vertically?? Ok I read that it can be mounted in both positions.

    • I'm sure they would work in that orientation but the switches themselves would rock over sideways rather than vertically - a bit weird.

You would probably be better off with touch style smart switches like the Deta ones

      • Yeah that’s my thought plus the 4 gang option also. Wonder if Bunnings will match the deal???

        • Not a chance in hell.

  • +1

Good article about it here. https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/www.gadgetguy.com.au/connect…
Might just give it a go. Really want a four gang also.

  • Prices are much better now than before

  • How to use these with Zigbee?

    • Get the ZigBee one from Zemismart which I linked to above. These are rebadged Zemismart anyway.

      Pax

  • Humm, when adding multiples into the cart seem to only apply 1 BYGOF, as an example if I add 4 2-Gang, only 1 is free, not 2.

    • Humm indeed. I Just checked Joyce Mayne and it’s worse, buy 4 get 0 free.

      Multiple click and collect orders?

      • Yep, might be the way to go.

  • I assume these things work fine with the Smart Life app?

  • Do these work like normal light switches also? i.e. can i still use like a normal light switch to turn lights on/off, but also use Alexa or an app?

  • Any idea whether these support dimming?
