[eBay Plus] Intel Core i5 9400 4.10GHz 6C/6T CPU $179.10 Delivered @ Computer Alliance eBay

Intel doesn't get too much love around here, but find me a better CPU for $180.

Great for a ~$500-$600 office/WFH build for everyone under COVID lockdown. Good choice for gaming given LGA1151 boards are pretty cheap. Benchmarks show it to be around the same gaming performance as a Ryzen 5 3600 (which is ~$100 more). Could pair it up with something like a 1660 Super for a $800 gaming focused build.

At $180, this is far superior to either the Ryzen 3 3100 or 3300X.

    • ps. what ram?
Any equivalent boards going cheap from umart etc? don't know if they got this exact model.

  • +1

Need to upgrade my i7 4790, thoughts on i7 4790 vs i5 9400? Obviously new board and ram also. Currently have GTX 1070 GPU.

Not enough of an increase to justify a new board and ram, you're looking at about a 10% improvement in fps at 1080p on average. You're looking at a 10600k (used 8700k if you can get one cheap?) level of CPU for anything meaningful.

      • in the similar boat , upgrating from i7 3770 ..Is it worth it.. maily use for running a few demo vms (hyper-v and vmware workstation) …

  • The performance today for the money is definitely good. But honestly it shouldn't be too long before having more than 6 threads will be of significant advantage to many. Personally I'd rather spend $170 on Ryzen 1600AF than this CPU for $180. But this is because I take a LONG time between upgrades.

  • @junk Sifter
    because it's $225 vs $400..
I already got a MSI RTX 2060 super 8GB for $500, just making up/updating and old machine

  • Damn do I buy this now or wait for other possible great deals on 3600 tomorrow with eBay promos….. Help please 😅

  • Just deciding whether to keep this stuff, apparently the i5 9400 has integrated graphics?
Kind of keen of building a small form factor low power device to connect to the tv and treat like a nas/streamer/file server.
Something like the Node 304 would be ideal, turns out I've ordered a micro-ATX motherboard so will have to sell that.
Still like the idea of it being a proper PC to use if need be so the video card is pretty decent size unless onboard is fine and wait for the new ones
(or sell my MSI RTX 2060 Super Ventus GP 8G OC, use this cheap RX580 in the mean time, then get a 2070s-2080s if they drop in price (or 3070/3080).

This CPU still seems great for the price. Also have 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200MHz CL16 unused.

    Cheers

  • Anyone found a good cheap mini-ITX board to go with this?
