    • I'm also interested in this. Looks positive but it's so rare so don't want to get stung!

"Eligible purchases do not include annual Card fees, cash advances, interest, balance transfers, fees and charges for traveller’s cheques and foreign currencies. " Is all exclusions I can find in the t&c

  • Is it worth cancelling existing credit cards before applying for this to maximise chances of successful application? I have 2 atmwith sub 100k salary (anz travel reward adventures, citi signature) but still have some lounge passes yet to be used.

    • Not 100% sure but I think once the lounge invitations are added to your qff account you can close the card and keep the invitations.

Edit: anyway it will take at least a month for the other cards to show up as being closed on your credit report so I don't think it'll help you applying for this one within 2 weeks

      • You won't get the lounge invitations until after your anniversary.

      • As long as you can prove that you have closed your account, it should be fine. Usually the banks send you a letter (ask them to email it to you) about account closure.
Check the T&C of the card e.g. The Westpac and St George cards - I applied just before closing them. They are valid for 12 months. It is a diff story if I can use them because of COVID.

    • +2

You shouldn't have had an Amex card that gives you QFF for 18 months. I have a Qantas Ultimate card from AMEX.. I would say that's best card I've ever had.

    • +1

Amex credit checking is more relaxed as compared to Banks. If you can drop one card, I would drop the Citibank card as its credit limit is 15k whereas the adventure is 6k. I am talking min credit limit. Your situation could be different.

      • +1

The last two Amex cards I applied for, there weren't even any credit enquiries that showed up on my credit report.

        • Seems like the same thing happened to me with this one. Will it be listed as a credit account on the file though? Otherwise one can not include this credit card in the question about total credit card limits when applying for another CC :-)

    • +1

I am wondering if there is still a point keeping my ANZ Travel Rewards card. Part of me thinks it is time to cancel but what do fellow OzBargainers think of Virgin's future?

  • +2

    Applied….
    Approved 1 minute later

    • How many payslips do they require?

      • I didn’t need anything, but only applied for 3k limit.

      • 0

  • Finally! I've been looking for a nice AMEX card deal :). Cheers, OP!

    • Me too! Almost 2 years since my last Amex. I will be closing this as soon as QFF points land though (gotta re-start that 18 month wait asap).

  • +2

    Great offer.

The minimum spend might be a bit difficult this time round due to the lockdowns here in melbourne. Most of the places i would usually use an amex (restaurants, department stores, bigw/kmart etc) are all closed, i barely drive anymore so petrol is out too. No travel plans for the forseeable future either, so flights/hotels also out.

Any ideas ozbargain? postbillpay no longer support paypal either, so can't even use it for bills.

    • +1

Yeh I was going to ask this. How are people finding meeting the minimum spend with the amex limitations these days.

      • +1

        have kids

        • +1

Already have a 4 year old that costs me plenty. None of which accepts Amex though

        • I don't mean in terms of meeting spending. Just in terms of limitations with places that will accept amex considering the limitations with access these days.

      • As a last resort, lots of gift cards from woolies/coles. But that’s not ideal from a cashflow perspective

        • could you please explain the cashflow part?

          • -1

@xrailgun: Lot's of cash stuck in gift cards - not earning high interest on a savings account. And the gift cards can only be spent in certain stores - where the cash could have been spent anywhere. (that's my take on it)

            • @johnmelb: oh noooo, effectively 5.3% instantaneous interest without jumping through monthly deposit and spending hoops for my sense of pride and accomplishment! The horror!

            • @johnmelb: Yep exactly right.

Having 3k tied up in gift cards that may take months/years to use up isn't optimal.

Most of my groceries are either from the markets or from aldi, i might spend $50 a week from woolies/coles; meaning even a 1k wish card could take me half a year to use up.

            • @johnmelb: what interest? lol 1.something%?

      • Buy a woolies gift card (at 5% off, ofc) for your next few months of groceries.

    • +4

Search on booking.com for reservations that have free cancellaton but take a prepayment as soon as you book. This has been very useful for me in the past.

      • +2

Or expedia ones also are fine for this. Perhaps easier because most expedia bookings take payment automatically, and then have a simple "cancel" button that processes refund immediately.

        • Same with Agoda.
They charged a foreign transaction fee, however it was refunded too when I cancelled. Not sure if that's the norm.

        • but wouldnt they refund to the original card?

      • +4

No offence but you spoil it for everyone. There are fewer and fewer places that no offer free cancellation because of people like you.

How about just acting in good faith.

        • -1

No offence but booking a $3k stay more than a year out and then cancelling it next month with still more than a year to go does not impact multinational hotel chains

          • @neyo: Probably a hassle for them to enter it into their reservation system and then remove it. Staff have better use of their time.

    • +1

Pay ahead for private health insurance and comprehensive insurance

      • +1

Telstra bills can be paid ahead, and via Amex now also (possibly only via paypal)

        • neither racv nor bupa take amex, unfortunately.

Telstra works, though i'm on a low monthly spend, so it wouldn't dent it too much. Still a useful tip though

    • Can still see PayPal as a payment option on PostBillPay. Is it not allowing to use AmEx cards via PayPal?

      • Yep, Amex is still allowed on Paypal Postbillpay. No problem getting the points.

        • thanks for confirming. have pay the council rates in a week or so….

      • Oh wtf.

        When i go to: https://paypaperbills.postbillpay.com.au/postbillpay/pay/def…

        It only lists MC/Visa.

But you're right, if i navigate through the menus of the auspost website; i get to this page : https://paypaperbills.postbillpay.com.au/postbillpay/default…

        Which does accept paypal.

I hadn't held an amex for the last ~2 years, so I didn't care so much that i couldn't paypal my bills, now this changes everything.

        • my council statement's has a postbillpay icon but it says through post office and there's no billpay code of ref #, what a sh1tty council! Any workarounds this?

          • @macr0hard: My council is the same, no way around it unfortunately as far as I’m aware…

    • Via Paypal used to work when I had an Amex up until December last year

    • woolies gift card with 5% off at cash rewards ? and then pay your groceries with those ? sure it's still $1000 a month to spend though

    • spend on gift cards…

  • +1

I completely (profanity) up my last amex deal.

Booked flights to a wedding that got cancelled, travel credit is all but useless now

Forgot to take the physical card to Sydney airport for a europe trip last year so missed the only chance to redeem the amex lounge passes.

and it's been less than 18 months so cant apply for this one lol

    • oh dear, at what point did you realise you'd forgotten your card? Was it when you were at the AMEX lounge front desk. That would be painful……

      • It was about an hour away from the airport but we'd been on the road for 2 hours already. No time to go back.

  • +1

Applied and formally approved within 5 minutes, cards in the mail 5 - 7 days. Gees that is quick, thought there would be more hoops to jump through.

    • This is good to know. The time for delivery of new card.

Plan all the purchases ahead haha

  • Not bad - assuming you can fly anywhere with the credit before you churn out. I guess you can always roll the dice; spend it on a flight in the future churn out, and cross your fingers.

If the credit limit us as low as 2k then could hold onto it - that 18 months wait always makes it tricky though

Might call AmEx and see if I'm over the 18 months

    • +1

oh damn - thought was Qantas credit, not straight up statement credit.

      I'm all over this

  • +1

If I get this, it will be the only credit card I have… just wondering - does amex generally still attract higher surcharges than visa/mastercard or has this been rectified recently… (i know they were working so hard to get Amex accepted more widely so would think they may have address this, …. and I havent been out much lately so just wondering about others' experiences)….

    • +1

They do. You will know if the merchants dont accept. Most or all super markets accept Amex. Furthermore, they have alot of cashback rebates promotion going on.

    • +1

amex generally still attract higher surcharges than visa/mastercard

Yes, especially if you try and use it at JB Hi-Fi. Caltex no longer surcharge for Amex though. YMMV

      • what is YMMV?? 👀👀??

        • Your mileage may vary …

    • It seems to depend on where you live, but in metro Sydney I’m almost never charged a surcharge and if I am, it’s usually flat across all card types (1-1.5%). A few places that charge different rates for Visa/MC have even had Amex as their cheapest option.

In the past month, I’ve put my phone/internet bill on my MC (Vodafone charges more for Amex) and one local business that doesn’t accept Amex. Everything else has taken it no worries.

    • +1

try to pay via paypal where possible

  • +1

Due to COVID, not going or eating out, WFH, no real need for new clothes, I barely spend these days other than groceries. Would be very hard to spend $3000 in 3 months on Amex card.

    • +1

Could you buy woolies gift cards with it on cash rewards? Would this still count towards the min spend?

      • +1

        Yep 👍

      • i dont think AMEX is accepted for those

    • +4

      Hi friend,

I am a Nigerian prince stuck in Australia. Without ways to communicate with my royal family in Nigeria, I am unable to arrange a chatered flight to go home. Not sure if you can help and lend me $3000 to make up short fall of the chartered flight. I will repay you $10000 for the kind assistance, and grant you the honourable Broden title - of the highest Nigerian order.

American Express is accepted as a mean of payment.

      Yours,
Broden Ogiame, the Olu of @#$#%^

  • +4

Wow, the application proccess was surprisingly painless. Do you have to supply pay slips later on? I am surprised that they don't request the payslips right away.

    • +2

American Express generally give no f***s

  • Has anyone had success in getting the bonus points and credit even if they are holding an Amex issued credit card, for example the annual fee free Qantas American Express Card.

  • +6

i just signed up to amex yesterday, kill me please.

    • -7

I can book you flights to the US where you can defend a small business from BLM, should get you over the line and help me with my spend I need on this card.

    • +2

      Cancel the application.

  • Applied. Thanks op.

    • Thanks for linking this

  • So this does not have a travel credit like the platinum ? But since the fee is waved, it is free ? I assume everyone will just cancel this once they get it.

  • +1

    Applied with following circumstances:
    Income: $70K
Other Credit Card/s total limit: $6,000
Home scenario: Mortgaged with $800 monthly repayment (half of total after shared with partner)

based on above do you think it should be approved?

    • Yep!

    • You can select your credit limit or maximum they will give you, This card goes down to $2k minimum so I would say you have a good chance of getting approved.

      • Yea. Set mine to $3k too. Spare card for churning, no point for a massive credit limit.

      • +1

Just got a call from American Express to confirm details and the updated me that application was unsuccessful.

We're unable to inform me over the phone why and said a letter will be mailed within 7-10 business days which will let why it has not been successful and offer ability to update additional details then as required.

When setting card limit I left it on the default option of have Amex select a limit based on provided details. Was this the mistake which caused card to be declined?

Seems odd to have income 30K over required minimum, no dependable, no other loans and a shared CC with $6K limit and get denied?

  • Thanks OP. Applied and approved in 1 minute. Quick and easy. :)

  • Applied! Thanks OP!

  • Easiest signup ever - approved and card will be in the post - no pay slips required!!

  • +1

Bit of a first world problem but freaking out a little given that I applied 2 hours ago and have not been accepted yet others have within minutes…

    • Did you provide you driving license number?

I applied for another amex card a few months ago and didnt put my driving license no as said optional and didnt have it to hand. Took 2 weeks and heard back saying not been offered the card…

This application I did and under 30 seconds said conditionally approved and a minute later the card will be in the post.

      • I didn't put in my driving license and haven't heard back either. Higher salary and fewer expenses than those who were approved immediately.

    • +1

Same. I was asked to verify my income with work documents.

    • GF applied for this but also no response yet (driving license number was provided) - only asked for the $2k.

    • +1

I did provide my license and 2k limit but maybe thr higher salary and minimal expenses is looking dodgy to them

    • Okay so AMEX rang me up this morning on a private number to clarify my details because there was a mismatch but then approved it right after. Now just gotta wait for the email confirmation and card!

  • +1

I love my AMEX but I'm missing out on too many new sign up deals, so looks like it's time to cancel and wait 18 months.

  • Does Amex let you pay (and earn points) with bpay? I pay my rent with bpay which makes hitting bonus point spend really achievable on other cards.

  • +8

Timing of $249 credit from T&Cs:

Please allow 8 to 10 weeks after you have met the spend criteria for the 75,000 Qantas Points to be credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account and the $249 statement credit to appear on your American Express statement.
