I reckoned this phone will be even cheaper after 12 is out, so DO NOT BUY!

Also rumor suggested that new iPhone 12 is running on Qualcomm chipset modem, which is heaps better than Intel modem currently on iPhone 11.

    • +1

Yeah it's September, new phones coming soon. But if you don't really care about that kind of thing is this a good price for right now?

      • +7

No, it would make no-sense buying knowing that this model will get superseded by iPhone 12, and this will drop further!

      • No, I think it will dive further once the new phones are here.

      • +2

If this is true, the iPhone 12 Pro Max even comes with a smaller price tag than iPhone 11 Max Pro

    • +1

well everytime they release new ones, apple lower their price by about $100 bucks generous enough if they lower it to $200 as they are serial overpriced premium claiming company. So might wait again for another sale, Black Friday Sale perhaps.
I reckon iphone 12s would be $100 more expensive.

      • +1

yeh exactly, not sure why everyone here could expect bigger price drops, the xr is still selling for more then a $1000 64gb..

    • As a lightweight user, I don't need much improvement on the performance. A good big screen + iOS + a fairly powerful CPU will do the job for me. But yeah why not wait for the new release so the old stock will drop the price

  • +1

How is a $1949 phone considered as a bargain??

    • +3

Phones have replaced laptops for a lot of people. People used to spend thousands on high end laptops, and now they spend it on phones. The phones are faster, has HDR screen, has a great camera. Why not spend this much on a phone. You'll use it a lot more often than a laptop.

      • I guess the thing is you could use a Samsung (as an example) as an actual laptop replacement as it can run desktop mode. You can't even do that on an iPhone. I'm not arguing about price, just your statement that people can do everything on phones, as iPhone you can't - you can't even copy random files to an iPhone.

      • +6

Sorry I don't buy this. You can't be productive with a phone. You need a keyboard and a decent size screen to get anything done.

Maybe only for web browsing but you can do that on a $600 or under phone just as well.

        • -4

You can use Excel and Word on iOS. Full Photoshop is coming to iPad OS. This iPhone has a "studio quality" camera, some photographers took Apple to court over the claim years ago and the court deemed the iPhone camera to be studio quality. The quality of the screen is as good as expensive TV screen, so it's like a portable high quality TV. You can actually use a phone standing on a train, you can't a laptop. I say iPhone but I mean any top tier smartphone that costs as much as the iPhone Pro, they all have great cameras, great screens, etc.

          • +2

@AustriaBargain: Apple should hire you for marketing.

I would love to see you do all your work from a phone. I can just imagine reviewing a 10000 page peer review with comments while you are on the train. It's very much a matter of YOU CAN, but very rarely would you - in case of emergencies perhaps? Like "Oh no I forgot to add a sentence to that document" compared to "I need to create a spreadsheet to manage my 20,000 data points, with 20 graphs and 4 tabs of lookups."

Just like you "can take studio quality photos", but can you get the photo you want with a tiny sensor and tiny MP camera for that massive print you are doing? No.

      • Phones have replaced laptops for a lot of people

        Sorry which people?

        The phones are faster,

omg…this comment really? phone is faster than laptop…smh

You must be an apple fanboy!!!

        • -3

Phones today are absolutely faster than expensive laptops 10+ years ago. The best phones today are much cheaper than the best laptops back then too, smaller, longer battery life, better screen technology, etc. And all this fancy new tech trickles down to everyone else later on too, after Apple and Samsung increase demand for premium parts. If it weren't for expensive phones then cheap Androids would still be single touch plastic screened lemons.

          • +3

            @AustriaBargain:

Phones today are absolutely faster than expensive laptops 10+ years ago

ok stop it mate, with every new comment you put, just makes you look more idi…don't worry.

            • -3

@Taro Milk Tea: Phones today make better value propositions to the average person than laptops did years ago, and even the average person before the smartphone knew a good laptop was something good to have. But now you don't need a laptop to plug your camera into to extract photos to upload to your social media. You can do it all on your phone.

      • +1

Urk. A decent laptop lasts "most people" 10 years ("most people" just need word processing etc)

I take your point but youre forgetting how often people replace phones.. like every second or third year. Top end Android users are almost as guilty as iphone purchasers ($1000-$1400 phones instead of $1700-$2200).

$1000 laptop + $500 android/windows phone*3 is what any sane person should limit their decade long spend habit to. = $2500

        Iphone user 3 to 5 * $2000 = $6000 to $10000
        Android similar 3 to 5 * $1300 = $3900 to $6500

My point is there are people who do what you say (because they can tolerate not being fully productive, ie: monitor and keyboard/mouse) BUT those people aren't being sensible.

No wonder people "can't afford houses!".

PS: there are valid reasons for buying better phones than I've assumed, eg: taking photos of your kids. Valid there's a big premium for that, but when that premium is the cost of an RX100 mk vii or whatever it's still taking the pss.

        • Who among us is using at least a 10 year old laptop?

          • +1

@AustriaBargain: I've got my 6-7 year old one and frankly it's blazing fast due to ssd and good cpu. It'll last a minimum of a few years yet. Again, more than enough for "most people". Iirc it was $1200 through dell outlet at the time.

            • @justtoreply: I give my 6-7 year old wooden blocks to play with and that entertains her for hours. Would you care to swap your phone or laptop for some wooden blocks? The wooden blocks pass the crucial 6-7 year old test.

              • +1

                @AustriaBargain: That's a silly comment really.

Can her blocks can do my spreadsheets, word documents and internet browsing just as fast?

If you go back more than 10 years ago, a laptop wouldn't last half as long. The low and mid range didn't have adequate grunt or ram or ssd like they do now. $1k gets you a productive machine these days

"Most people" aren't gaming, producing high resolution videos, etc. Those people buy a real machine.

                • -1

@justtoreply: I think it's silly for you to say something that's good enough for your 6 year old to play with should be good enough for an adult to use. Yet obviously it's not good enough for yourself to be using because you relegated it to your 6 year old and bought yourself something else instead. It's hypocritical. You shouldn't be recommending anything to anyone at all, there are no 6 year olds here on OZB.

                  • @AustriaBargain: Not what I said. I still use it. But I can see it was easily misread

"I've got my 6-7 year old one", one = "laptop"

And yes I will be using it for years yet, as I said.

                    • -1

@justtoreply: You got your 6-7 year old a 10 year old laptop. Anyway the claim that a laptop should last 10 years is unfounded I think. If you looked at the average and median amount of time a laptop lasts before it stops working or is too hard to use for whatever reason, then I think you'd find it's well below 10 years.

                      • @AustriaBargain: You gotta read closer mate. I do not even have a 6-7yo kid! I have a 6-7yo laptop!

I7-3517U, 8gb, ssd, FHD touchscreen, purchased 2013 for $1000 is still enough for web browsing/word/excel/streaming video which is all most people want.

But if you wanna recommend people spend lots more on phones when a laptop would serve the same function and save them tonnes of cash in the long run, that's your prerogative. Not going argue that anymore.. I'm done, I'm out of this thread.

                        • @justtoreply: Why buy a laptop when a phone will do the same functions most people need, and can fit in their pockets and be pulled out and used at any time, even if it is raining.

    • +1

      Welcome to 2020!

  • +1

JB have had the 11 pro and Max for $200-250 off for weeks now.

  • -5

Not a deal at all. Apple keeps cutting the corners on accessories like earphones and chargers. If we still swallow these, Apple will cut more until their sales and profit figures drop. Probably will see a phone without a package box from pretty soon.

    • +1

This one still has EarPods and a USB-C Charger, bargain! LOL

    • +1

You can blame consumer demand for that, they continue to buy Apple products even after price increases. Even if a $2k phone sounds ridiculous to some people including myself, you can’t deny there are people who are happy to pay the price. In economic terms there is price inelasticity with the iPhones, increases in price don’t decrease demand by much.

      • Have you compared the iPhone Pro to say the iPhone 4 or 7 or any of those older ones? It's like comparing a Audi R8 or whatever (I dunno cars) to a Honda.

        • Technology improves with time so a comparison between a new model iPhone to one from several years ago isn’t a fair comparison. I would also argue many of the features in current flagship are unnecessary additions only there to create tiers to justify higher pricing and status.

As for the R8 vs Honda, some would prefer a Honda NSX over the R8. In fact the NSX from the 90’s appreciates in value each year. You can’t say that about the iPhone…

          • @gamemaster: Okay so why aren't cheap or even moderately priced Androids like little Audi R8's then? If it's that easy to make an iPhone Pro or Galaxy Elite 10 then why doesn't some random Chinese company just make one and undercut Apple and Samsung by $1500.

            • @AustriaBargain: That’s a bit too simplistic of a question without addressing economies of scale, R&D, marketing budgets, and market share. It’s going off in a tangent to my original point.

My point is a $2k phone doesn’t provide value imo compared to phones of previous generations which were significantly cheaper for the leaps in technology they provided. Yet people still are willing to pay the price for $2k phones, it’s not Apple‘s or Samsung’s that people should be angry at.

              • -1

                @gamemaster:

My point is a $2k phone doesn’t provide value imo compared to phone

Obviously plenty of people disagree with you as these phones sell quite well and many people, especially young people, are keenly aware of the value of them.

Apple is blurring the quality difference by putting the worlds best processor in all their phones instead of just the most expensive ones. But there are still clear differences and it's at the top of teenagers xmas wish lists and adults routinely pay that much because they see a difference. Once they are used to a premium phone they find it hard to go back to an economy one, it's not like "oh well they are all the same to me anyway". Maybe the Marlboro Man wouldn't use a phone much because he's all rustic and real and doesn't care much for technology. But this is OZB, there are no techno-phobic mountain men here.

If for you the utility of a sports car was the same as a bus because the bus goes straight to your work anyway, would you then say anyone who wanted a car and didn't catch the bus like you is an idiot? Throwing money away on features that you personally don't even need.

                • @AustriaBargain: You are making pointless nonsensical arguments.

                  • -1

@gamemaster: I apologise if it is too hard to understand for you and you struggle to make any sense of my point at all. I feel for your situation, the world is often abstract.

                • @AustriaBargain: A lot of young people purchase iPhone as they are crazy, they just don't try other brands. It's a shame

    • Hasn't happened yet lol, come back when the rumours are true if at all.

    • Because Samsung and other Android resellers are so much better with overpriced flagships and zero updates to the OS and security. Even the almighty Google struggles to offer updates for the Pixel range and offers it as a "feature" for their flagships and they are a software company, that can't make a deployable software update system for their own OS, WTF?. Samsung has finallllly come to the party with the new range of $1000+ phones offering an entire 3 years of updates, whoopie dooo. Apple hate is so 1980s, time to move on, all of the companies suck in some way and they overcharge and under provide. Buy what you want, enjoy it .

    • No packaging = smaller environmental footprint, so I hope you are right!

  • +2

    Stop buying overpriced phones

    • Yea although I can see value, I still think that we shouldn't be buying phones this expensive purely to send a message to the manufacturer. You can get a Note 20 ultra and buds for less than this.

  • $1899 on voda

    • Yep ~$50 cheaper at Vodafone.

    • Plus min 1 monthly plan charge?

      • +1

With the minimum charge it works out to be $10 cheaper still. Plus if you cancel the plan on the day you don’t have to pay the monthly charge (must have pro rata as well).

        • +1

who's going to bother will all that for $10 lol, also they credit check you if not already a customer.

  • +1

Still too expensive for a phone like this. I won't buy it until it's Made In Australia or India maybe another option.

    • Made in Australia… hahaha you have a good sense of humor

  • +1

might have to trade in my old car and grab one of these

    • or sell a couple of LED TVs to get to this..

      • more like 5 based on current prices

  • New iPhone usually announce in September….

    • they got delayed…encountered some engineering problems…were not even sure if we are getting 120hz on display…plus whole new design for iphone 12

  • Hang on it this is 2k how much is the new iPhone going to be??

    • $2.3k-2.4k

      • I thought I could upgrade from the xs without spending a lot more than 1k. Disappointing

  • +2

The average person should not be buying an iPhone.

It isn't even bezeless, the batteries aren't even that big so then what happens when you buy the next gen iPhone with no bezels and a bigger battery? Expect to pay more. Do you really wanna spend $2500 on next gen iphone??

What you need to do is increase competition by buying non iPhones so iPhone is forced to drop their prices.

Expect carriers to offer a 3 year contract for iPhones in the future. Are some people mad?

    • +2

      Haha, carriers already do lol.

  • Let's ban all Chinese Brand phones, so iPhone 13, 14 can be Made in USA and would be double the price to 4K, then people will be much happier to use iPhone and stop whinge. Good for Apple.
