Neighbour Lifting Weights at 4:30am

So I will keep this short.

Neighbour is lifting weights at around 4:30am in his garage which is closely located next to my bedroom.

We have told them before to maybe invest in a mat so when he drops it, its not directly onto the concrete floor.

They keep doing it, not every night but its bloody annoying. He has a home gym machine, and I reckon his deadlifting.

Next point of contact if he keeps doing it? Po-po?

    • I feel you. Im gonna be on the lookout for a house once covid restrictions ease up.

Not because of that tossbag haha.

But I guess you never know what you will get as a neighbour. I will however maybe put rollershutters on the next house or some sound insulation.

  • put white noise on spotify.
Had same problem, only way it was fixed.

  • +1

Similar problem in my household except its family. Use Prosafe ear plugs class 4. Cant even hear my alarm if its not right next to me

  • +1

hmm, maybe actually get him a mat that might help ease the problem, and gift to the neighbour as an early Christmas present =)

As some comments mentioned above, it'll be best long term if your relationship with the neighbour improves rather than worsen. Especially during challenging pandemic times, supporting one another through reaching out a kind hand when times of need come up is always a good option. Kindness helps =)

    All the best OP!

  • So I guess a better way of asking,

What is an acceptable time for the weights to be lifted?
    7am to midnight?

    • +2

If it's interrupting your peaceful enjoyment of your property, especially regularly and for a decent amount of time, then really at anytime of the day it can be inappropriate.

      • +1

If you're complaining about noise at any stage during the day then you need to get a life. You can't expect people to be dead quiet in the middle of the day.

        • Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to leave the library.

        • +2

If I was a shift worker who comes home at 7am and expects to get around 7 hours of sleep and my neighbour insisted on doing very noisy activities during the day I would have a quiet word with them and expect cooperation, not a bad attitude and 'it's the daytime, FO!'

    • I think whatever the Residential Noise regulations are, is a fair control. 7AM-8PM

  • Tell him to invest in some sound proof walls to reduce the noise reaching you… or use egg cartons . I heard they work well at sound absorption. Or you can do it on hour end , I think

    • +1

That would be "fight fire with (edi)fier"

  • +4

My 70+ year old neighbor plays the drums from 5pm to 7pm every night, completely out of time to Nutbush. I have considered moving.

    • Hahaha.
      :)

    • +1

When you do move, don't drive too fast. 25 is the speed limit.

  • ear plugs are cheaper

  • how does his household put up with this??

    • Its not as noticeable in the other rooms.
The house they built now means that our room is adjacent to there garage.

Pm me if you want to know more 🤣

      • how do you know so much about the layout of the house?

        • Go to your pm

    • The way its layed out. I think hes bedroom is on top of the garage and the others are on the other side of the house. So they wouldnt hear shit, or they turn a blind eye

  • +2

This place has changed. I was expecting the usual "bikies" comment. Unless I missed it.

  • Buy a mat

  • You can take a light or dark approach.

Light = buy some cheap mats for him to use - for the sake of $50 is it worth the mental stress and anger?
Kindly let him know sound travels crazy far at night

Dark = Get angry & revenge

My neighbour likes to use a punching bag at midnight in my apartment block - luckily he only does it maybe 6 times a year - but 20 of us are kept awake.

  • Dem gains aren't going to gain themselves!

  • I saw this in episode of vice principals

I don't remember how it ends but it should give you some good advice

  • +2

He lifts weights at 4.30am? He must go to bed early - start practicing the drums at 11.00pm.

  • +1

He shouldn't be dropping the bar with deadlift though… As its not a full rep if he drops it. Also I would think he would be grunting more.. but I guess his pulling weight above his capacity.

Even in lockdown, these "lifters" gotta find ways to get attention during covid.

  • +7

It doesn't matter the source, if its not emanating from an animal (barking dog etc) then it's offensive noise- because its made by a human.

No- you shouldn't have to wear earplugs.
No- you shouldn't deal with it.
No- you shouldn't pay to get him deadening mats.

I can't believe the advice you are being given here…. like YOU are problem!

As soon as you hear it again, call the cops.
Explain that this has been happening repeatedly and you've had enough.

KEEP CALLING THEM when he makes the noise at unreasonable hours.

They'll either eventually get the message through to him nicely, or just issuing noise abatement directions… and then fines when he still doesn't comply.

It's very inconsiderate, even after you've spoken to them about it.
If possible, record it as well. Even better, record it while you are speaking…. so anyone listening has a reference to how loud it is when its happening.

This neighbour isn't listening to you- so maybe he'll listen to the cops.

It's not a council issue, and there is most definitely something that can be done about it. KEEP CALLING COPS UNTIL IT STOPS. EVERY MORNING. They'll come, believe me.

You have my sympathy. No-one should have to put up with that, and you’ve asked nicely. I used to work nights on the top floor of a five-story building with a gym on the ground level. After 5 pm, when most of the office noise died down, I would hear these regular thunderous sounds somewhere in the building. I asked about it and a colleague pointed out that it was guys in the gym on the ground floor doing weights.

  • Some who has a home gym at home and been using it for 20 odd years, I am surprised it is that loud that it is waking you up? Also a lot of people do start their workout routines early in the morning so they can then go to work etc. If his deadlifts are making that much noise, what kind of damage is he doing to his floor / weights? And is he Deadlifting for 1 hour? I mean each exercise should only take around 10-15 minutes tops to get a few sets in etc. All the exercises cant be that noisy? I am not sure Cops would think using weights in your own home at 4:30am is a noise issue.

    • First of all, I know he doesnt work.

2nd of all sometimes its an initial plate hitting that would wake me up….and then whilst I try to go back sleep, the plates would continually hit.

I also said I reckon his deadlifting (possibly alternate with the home machine).

With your experience of a home gym in your house how many times have you decided to pump one out at 430am and if you have, do you note it might be loud so you keep it as quiet as you can?

      • -2

you have to start early, then breakfast protein etc so if he starts 4:30 - > 6:30 could make sense, id prob start at 6 :30 be done by 8:30 breakfast + proteinshake

        • But he doesn't work…lol

          • +1

@iNeed2Pee: not really about work, start the day early with workout so your body can build and recover through the day I guess

            • @monkeyfood: A great time for a workout is around 7pm. Body can repair itself overnight.
Each to there own i guess.

              • @iNeed2Pee: yeah I agree, I don't know how you could be bothered to get up at 4:30 repeatedly to do it, but maybe he read on some site or somebody told him? since u looking for why

                • @monkeyfood: Generally its dependant on the person. Some peoples bodies are more energetic and up for it in the mornings and others in the evenings after a day of calorie consumption. A lot of people also like to get it done and out of the way as if they wait for the evening they find other aspects of life get in the way and they end up missing workouts.

              • @iNeed2Pee: No, that's a stupid time. Exercising at night increases your alertness, affects your sleep and generally you have less energy to really get moving.

                • @Orico: Its still better then 4.30am….lol

                  • @iNeed2Pee: It's fairly common to wake up before sunrise for exercise, especially among business people, athletes and fitness nuts.

But I feel your pain. Arsehole next door bought a home gym and puts the music up to max while in his garage.

      • I have worked out at various odd hours of the night or early morning. I used to have my home gym in a bedroom then when it got larger and heavier, i moved the items to the games room. In both aspects there was absolutely no noise that could be heard if you go outside, my house is single brick veneer. If you had a shared wall then maybe some of the vibration would go through but even then not much. But for noise to travel from one house to another from just weights is really odd as a lot of people have weights at home. If he is slamming it on the ground i dont get how much damage it must be doing to the floor and also his weights.

  • +1

Ask him to get some bumper plates and a platform. But then nek minnit he might take up Olympic Lifting.

  • Let him know. I think any decent person will understand

  • He's technically in the wrong since noise restrictions are still in place despite lockdown.
But at the same time, if he can't use the gym it's probably a sensitive issue for him.

If you're both planning on staying long-term then you could offer to buy them a mat as a sign of good will.
If not, then yeah just call the cops.
It sounds petty, but you've still gotta get your sleep.

  • Earplugs my dude

  • +1

Send him a nice letter with flowers, chocolates and a drop of blood.

  • Haven't read the whole thread. Be civil and tell him straight to start later because it's way to loud and you need sleep, don't give him suggestions to reduce noise. If he refuses then rat him out.

  • If he does weights at 4:30am he goes to bed early.
Lift weights late at night next to his bedroom.
Let out a big roar on your final reps.

  • Get a dog that barks all day.

  • Challenge him to a karate duel inspired by Cobra Kai. Winner takes his home gym equipment.

  • Next point of contact if he keeps doing it?

Buy him a mat as a early xmas present?

  • +1

Simple answer. Just keep reporting him. It's your right to be able to have good sleep without being woken up by noise at unreasonable hours of the night/morning.
You've already approached him and spoke to him about it nicely. I strongly disagree with the suggestions of buying a mat for him. Nobody finds that idea ridiculous? Since when did the OP suggest he wants to become his neighbour's friend?

    • think thats like taking a bazooka to a fist fight…
best to talk to your neighbour - he might not realise the noise comes through his walls/outside…

why are people so fearful to talk to their neighbours these days!?

      • Because people dont like confrontation unless its road rage 🤣

    • Don't worry. Buying a mat shows you are not the alpha dog. I think it's a joke. The guy cannot be reasoned with. As I mentioned abive, if you are banging weights in a garage at 430am and aren't aware it's pissing off your neighbours then you are a (profanity) moron. We've lived near public housing and just kept on reporting them. Other people complained to each other but did not dare report them. We kept at it, took time but they were evicted.

  • +1

So he must go to bed early, start mowing your lawn at 8pm or start blasting music

  • Keep him up late at night so he is too tired to work out in the morning. Maybe at 11pm put loud music on a timer until midnight.

  • Keep him up late at night so he is too tired to work out in the morning. Maybe at 11pm put loud music on a timer until midnight. He will hate it more that you're keeping him up late than you do that he wakes you up early.

  • +1
    • Ill use my gym gloves to slap him one…lol

  • I lift at unsociable hours under my neighbours bedroom (started 4am this morning) and this guy has banged on the floor previously when my wife and I were having a normal conversation late at night so he is sensitive to noise and not afraid to let you know. Never had a complaint, deadlift, squats, presses, using a metal power rack. It is very easy to insulate for noise and not be a dick to your neighbours, this guy has no excuse.

Cops won't do much though, you need to contact the council who will issue a notice and then a fine if it continues and most council workers are lazy, they won't even investigate the noise. If you say it is causing disturbance, they will just go with that.

  • We used to have students living next door that would party Friday and Saturday nights. We had an infant at the time and our bedroom is on that end of the house. After a couple of weekends where music went 'til 3am I started 'tuning' my Husky for half an hour at 7am. My bike may have even been suspiciously close to their windows at times, but they seemed to get the message.

  • If police do not help, consider writing a custom complaint template about noisy neighbor and drop into letterboxes of all neighbors on street, encouraging them to sign and forward to council.

If those pile up at council he will get in big trouble.

Alternatively, if you know your other neighbors well and feel comfortable talking to them, create template and knock at their door, encouraging them to sign. Once you have 5-10 names/signatures, send all together to council.

It all takes just one person to take the lead and start the process. More power in numbers.

Also, check your councils’ website on hours where “noise/construction work” is allowed to take place. You are within your right to complain outside those times for whatever reason.

  • So what did you end up doing? Update please?

  • +1

They have stopped lifting at that time!

Not too sure if he's injured or has an ozbargain account 🤣

    • Nice…

  • But what did you dooooooo? Bikies? Letter?

    • +1

I did go outside and use the excercise bike at around 7pm with my JBL charge pointing directly at there house….they can see me from there kitchen….did that for about an hr…but nothing else lol!

  • +1

Try a stink bomb so that it wafts through the vents. He will probably spend more time puking all over the barbell than lifting it.

    • Hahaha thats a good idea!
