I think you can write off in the tax, just not at once.
The tax write off is only useful if your income is still in the top tax bracket.
I'm glad some people have still got income to claim against this year. Better for me to depreciate over 3 years via straight line so that I can claim 2/3 of the cost when hopefully I've got an income again.

@Nom: Employers don't always provide everything a worker needs to do the job. One might need the HDD to store work files he brings home.
