Not sure if a bargain, or just kinda what it's worth for old tech. It's a no from me, but thanks anyway OP.

  • Quick question from someone that knows nothing about networking. The 8 port version is this sufficient or ideal switch for connection 2 computer to internet for home use?

    • +1

If you're happy with only one of them receiving a tenth of it's possible network connection speed, go for it.

I'd suggest spending the extra for one of these if four ports is enough.

      • Fantastic. Thank you for suggestion.

      • what's the difference of using a switch vs the 4 ports on the back of the modem?

        • +1

Really, you would only need a separate switch if you need a) more ports or 2) need\want more advanced capabilities like VLAN tagging and you get a managed switch like this.

          • @douglasac10: If I need say 4 more extra ports and buy this item, i'd effectively have 7 correct? (3 from modem, and switch connects to last port to get 4 more more)

    • would check if your internet device can take more than 1 Ethernet cables

I got excited until I realised the lack of gigabit ports.

    • Only two Gigabit ports. Not for someone who needs multiple high-speed devices.

Personally I just need the speed for home office and a server in the garage. My internet connection is below the 100Mbit anyway and I don't need more for TVs and game consoles.

I just wanted something that looks neat rack-mounted.

Fine if your only using for internet if you have a slow plan but if your transfering files/data over the home network still best to get gigabit.

  • +1

They are cheap considering they are managed + SFP capable, but very basic without any large number of Gigabit lan ports.

  • I have 2 routers, one is running as an AP. Would I be able to use the Ethernet ports on it like an unmanaged switch or do I need an actual switch?

    • +1

Ports on your router will work the same. Just plug things into it and off you go, assuming you've turned off dhcp, DNS, firewall etc

  • +2

A managed switch seems like more trouble than it's worth for home use, and the lack of gigabit ports isn't great.

  • Or look for a used one on Gumtree. Shouldn't be more than $10.

  • +1

Here I was getting all excited until I realised the real lack of gig. Would have easily jumped on it despite being TP-Link.

  • Upvoted but then realised it’s not full gigabit. Not worth it now.

    • +1

      and no free prime shipping

      • +1

There was free shipping before as the deal was on Harris Technology. Once they sold out it switched to another store without free Prime. You can see this on the $19.99 one.

  • out of stock I think Harris Technology is not anymore there

  • It says 2 gigabit ports, but the second one is sfp, does it need a $20 adapter to make it into rj45?
