Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 Stop-Start Fully-Synthetic Engine Oil - $19.99 @ Autobarn (in-Store/C&C)

1370

Great price for fully-synthetic oil - best deal in a while. Stocked up from the last deal and have been using this in all of the family's cars since ('09 Fiesta, Kluger, Aurion, Grand Vitara) and they're not dead yet so…it's oil?

For C&C, you may need to select a location under "Shipping:" before it'll let you add to cart.

This has my favourite marketing nonsense of all time, the smoothness indicator on the front of the bottles.

If only it was also scratch and sniff…

      • My kitties cat food box has a scratch and sniff.

  • How's this different to 5-30 Edge?

    • +5

I did some reading comparing the duo couple weeks ago.
Castrol EDGE is the premium product line. Magnatec is after that. I think from this post.

Pretty sure Castrol Edge is better - I use Castrol Edge in all my cars, it's a fantastic oil and I'd buy it over this Magnatec.

I've trawled and there are generally two answers, both of which are responses to your question:
      1. Quotes a marketing statement that says it's better with zero substantiation.
      2. I use edge, it's better - refer to point number 1.

For the majority of cars there is going to be perceivable difference both to economy, life and wear.

    • I'm also wanting to know what the differences are (if any) - about to buy my 1st oil as well for at home top ups.

Edge will be 50% as per this OzBargain post, but the price difference would be $16~ with both being on sale.

Today even a normal driver can stop and start as many as 18,000 times a year.

Lol. 50 times per day. Stuck in a lot of traffic.

  • Has anybody tried it for Camry Hybrid?

    • 5w 30 SN oil is recommended oil for the 2AR FXE engine

      Yes didn’t work

    Can this substitute 5w20?

    • Yes, if you're not driving in subzero temperatures. Pretty sure most of the mechanics substitute this here. But , it may cause a very small increase in fuel consumption, probably negligible.

Thanks OP, good price so ordered 2

    Absolute steal! Thankyou OP

  • Can this replace SAE 30? Seems fine to me but I'm no expert. It's for a lawn mower.

    • +1

The SAE is a single viscosity designed for one temp. 5-30 is for cold start and running hot.
I would think it should still function fine.

    • i am after the same answer. I used 0-20 in my mower and it started leaking around the gasket after a year. i am wondering if this is thick enough for honda mower

  • damn, that is a nice price

  • is this vw 504 507? Can't seem to see it. For GTI/ Audi A3

Has anyone been able to add to cart?

    • Make sure you've selected a store under "Shipping:" before adding to cart. Thanks, I'll add this to the post.

  • Damn, outside the 5Km radius for me.

    • You will be ok, ill keep a lookout for the pesky police

  • seriously cheap for full synthetic. any harm of using this for lawn mower?

how long does oil last in the garage? i still have to get through 3 jugs, that is still going to take me about 2 years to use up.

    • Don't buy it, there always plenty of good engine oils. RESIST

    • imo, as long as it's sealed it should be ok

      • I don't think oil goes off, i've had it in the garage for 18 months + before and have never seen any separation or change in consistency or anything like that.

Last bottle of Castrol edge i purchased had a foil seal under the lid too so it should stay extra fresh !
