101

As title states, this is a Pre-Order only, not sure when actual release date is.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 256GB Model - $1029 (normally $1149)
Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 128GB Model - $949 (normally $1349)

There is also a current promotion from Samsung (Not valid for Toby Deals) if ordered before Noon Today.
Available for stores such as Officeworks, Harvey Norman, JB Hifi, for a free Keyboard Cover (RRP $299) . Details Here

I have the wife heading to Officeworks, JB Hifi and Harvey Norman now to see if they'll price match / beat the Toby Deals price, with the free Keyboard Cover.

I'll update in a short while if it goes through. Wish me luck!

Update: Officeworks stated they weren't part of Pre-Order, JB Hifi said they couldn't match anything from Toby Deals and the Keyboard Promotion finished at Noon AEST time, so 2 hours before the missus arrived. Didn't check at Harvey Norman.

It's a no go for us, I'll probably just get the S6 Lite instead.
Let me know if anyone else had any luck, but seems like a dead deal. Sorry everyone.

The tab s7 is not amoled display. S7+ is better

Officeworks won't PM toby deals, good luck.

    • Officeworks also don't do Pre-Orders apparently. on the JB Hifi next door!
      Update soon! Fingers crossed.

Tobydeals are parallel importers so I doubt anyone here would match them unless they weren't aware.
I'd pay a bit more for local stock for the 2-year warranty.

  • At that price getting an i5 surface pro 7 for around $1200 would be better right? Android tablets are still pretty average OS wise, I know Samsung puts their improvements over it to try and help it.

I think it depends on what you want to do with it. A Surface Pro can run lots of apps and is better at multitasking, but the S7 is instant-on like a phone, thinner, lighter, should have longer battery life, built-in 4/5G, has a really nice 120Hz Super AMOLED screen (on the +), and can handle basic tasks like web browsing, emails, office docs, and video conferencing just fine.

Power users definitely wouldn't be satisfied with a Tab S7 as a primary device, but I think it would work fine as a secondary device or a primary one for people who have more basic computing requirements and don't want to worry about things like windows updates. Existing ransomware wouldn't run on Android either. :)

      • Agreed, but at this price it seems very specific for just wanting a bigger phone screen right? Also this one is LCD not AMOLED

        • I was specifically for the wife when she re-starts school next month in Nursing.
More for note taking, studying, watching movies etc.

Compared to the Surface, this has almost double the battery life, but less processing power.
The Surface also costs significantly more once you bundle in the keyboard and upgrade it to the i5 model.

          • @HiredGoon: Oh damn no education email friends?
Just FYI, the battery life is almost identical for i5 and the galaxy tab s7, 13.5hrs vs 15hrs.

i5 with Keyboard bundle it is $1,474 currently yes, unless you know anyone with a student email.

When was the last time "13.5 hours" on a Windows laptop was actually "13.5 hours"? ;)

(same could be said for any device though, so best to look at reviews)

        • Agreed, but at this price it seems very specific for just wanting a bigger phone screen right?

It's not just a bigger phone screen. You can run multiple apps on the same screen at a usable size, or try the desktop-like DeX mode. There are plenty of tablet-aware apps as well, like the MS Office suite. You can also annotate PDFs with the included s-pen which can be very useful when WFH'ing if you have to sign documents or forms.

Also, non-multitasking-related tasks like simply browsing a website or watching a video is a better experience on a bigger screen.

Also this one is LCD not AMOLED

I didn't say this was AMOLED. I said the + model was AMOLED.

          • @eug: I read reviews on the Surface quoting 6ish hours of use on a cycle, compared to the s7 should be well over 10 hours. There were also multiple review quoting issues with the keyboard, random power downs, and issues with word processing randomly closing down without saving. I did like the look of the Surface, but that turned me off.

TBH we'll probably get the S6 / S6 Lite, with a keyboard cover. Should suit just fine, will be keeping an eye out over the coming weeks for Prime day / Black Friday Sales. The S5e is also an option, but I think she'd like the S-Pen. Can be had for around $700 with the cover currently.

@eug: This device is not the + model. So not sure the relevance to the argument?

Also any galaxy phone does what you said, Note has the stylus also. So it's effectively a bigger galaxy note right?

And yes, I can get well over 10 hours with battery mode on eco, but I do understand why people may not be able to get the max out of it like they can an iPad or Android device.

            • @onlinepred: Hmm interesting points to consider then. She should be able to get her education email sorted soon, which might get us some better deals. I tried to do this with the daughter for her education email, but 5 mins of work is too much for her bother making an account…. Teenagers….

              • @HiredGoon: The surface laptop 2 is pretty great as an education tool, very light, easy to use, touchscreen etc. We picked one up for $1.1k last year, i5 with 8gb ram and 256 hdd. The first one had slow down issues though, replaced it and seems all good now.

Why are you fixating on that one thing - that was addressed at the start - while ignoring the rest of the post?

Also, OP was comparing it to a 12.3" Surface Pro 7 which is closer to the 12.4" S7+ than the 11" S7, especially after you take into account the screen ratio. People in the market for the S7 would also be interested in the S7+.

Also any galaxy phone does what you said,

You missed the part where I said "…at a usable size".

Note has the stylus also. So it's effectively a bigger galaxy note right?

You're just being argumentative. If you are unable to see the appeal of a tablet and refuse to acknowledge that other people may use their devices differently to you, then there's no point in continuing this discussion which would just go around in circles.

              • @eug: I don't think he's trying to be argumentative at all, just offering a different view point, with some insight on the Surface.
He makes some valid points about the Surface, but I still think it's stretching my budget that little bit too far for my needs.
I think the Samsung Tablet would suit purpose a bit better, while being more user friendly and faster for the wife.
An argument could also be made for the Apple Tablets, though it would fall on deaf ears for me, doesn't mean they aren't a valid option for some.

Oh, we've conversed in the past before so I know where the discussion was heading. :)

@eug: I was just pointing things out. The S7+ is effectively a bigger Galaxy Note at the price point of a MS Surface Pro 7. I think the S7 (not +) is the only one I would consider, but at this price IMO it's too close to a full on tablet like the Surface. Otherwise I'd be pushed to get a Galaxy z fold 2 instead of having a phone and a tablet ;-)

I have a Surface Pro5 and a Surface Laptop 2 in the house, also have iPads and an old Tab s5. I love tablets, just pointing out from my experience, having a Surface at the same or cheaper price than an android tablet is preferential for me, having full OS and apps, easily transfer files to/from devices with an actual file manager etc. I know the surface pro is heavier too, but I don't mind the weight. The one thing I prefer android tablets for is pure media consumption as the surface screen ratio isn't great for that, but otherwise I find I often get caught on the iPad or S5 that I need to use an app or file that's just far easier to manage on the surface, so now I don't reach for the S5 or iPad, just go straight to the Surface.

Anyway peace out, was just chatting.

That only makes sense if you do the same tasks you'd do on a Note.

You wouldn't like typing out a long document on a Note, but you can easily do it on an 11 or 12.4" device.

If your work involves lots of emails, responding to all of them on a Note would be tiresome compared to a tablet with a keyboard.

If you create PPT presentations, copying images from websites or graphs from Excel, you really wouldn't want to do it on a Note - it'd be much, much more doable on a tablet.

When it's time for a break you could watch some YouTube videos on a Note, but once again that would be a very different experience to watching it on a 12.4" screen.

So while both the Note and Tab run Android, you would simply do different things on them. Saying a Tab is just a big Note is sort of like saying a 4WD is just a big car. They are both vehicles, but you'd do different things with them because they excel at different things.

I love tablets, just pointing out from my experience, having a Surface at the same or cheaper price than an android tablet is preferential for me, having full OS and apps, easily transfer files to/from devices with an actual file manager etc.

Oh, absolutely. If I could only have one device, it would definitely be a Surface as it can do a lot more. But I know that there are lots of people who aren't so tech-oriented who don't care about being able to browse a filesystem easily, or want to run obscure configuration tools, or open 20 Chrome tabs at once. For them, a more basic OS like Android could be a great match as it would let them do what they want to do without having to care about the downsides of running a full-blown desktop OS on a tablet.

That's why I said in my first response "it depends on what you want to do with it". Power users wouldn't be satisfied, but people with more basic requirements could be completely satisfied.

I find Android tablets useful for leisure and lighter computing tasks. I have a Surface Book clipboard on my sofa and switch between that and a Tab S6 when I want to sit back and browse. I prefer the 13.5" screen size and ease of multitasking on the Surface, but prefer the touch UI and screen responsiveness of the Tab S6. Tablet mode on Windows 10 feels less snappy to navigate around compared to Android.

Anyway peace out, was just chatting.

That's great, I was worried it'd go downhill. Sorry for being presumptious.

@eug: Kudos for the rational debate without getting heated/personal.

        • -1

since phones have the same resolution as these tablets or even higher, the apps scale perfectly. If you can fit extra buttons on a tablet screen, you could have fit those extra buttons on the phone screen also.

    • +1

depends on your use case. I never use my surface pro for media consumption because it's so heavy compared to a tablet and the fan runs when it's doing anything slightly intensive. but it's great to have something that can run windows apps etc (can't run an IDE on a tablet..). If Samsung put more time into Linux on Dex, then this would be even more appealing.

      • +1

Yea really sucks they canned linux ond dex. Wireless linux on dex would have been epic. Would be all over a note phone for that.

  • Be aware that Apple are liekly announcing a new iPad in 5 days time.

    • I think they already revised the iPad pro this year with the new cameras etc.

      • Rumour is that there will be new iPad Air model, which will look like 2018 iPad Pro with 11-inch screen, with TouchID instead of FaceID.

        • where is the fingerprint scanner going to be placed? They don't have on screen finger print scanner technology. The very reason they removed it from the iPad Pro is because they removed the home button.

            • @aveeno bb: Not the most convenient spot but ok.

Makes you wonder why they didn't think of this a few years ago.

              • @lostn: Same reason why iPhone X onwards there is no TouchID, they have been replaced with FaceID.

Budget iPad lineup (iPad, iPad Air, iPad mini) all use old form factors which have home button with TouchID.

It would also do with cost-saving, a dollar or two saved on additional fingerprint readers can amount to millions of dollars if you think about the number of devices sold.

                • @aveeno bb: $2 trillion company as a penny pincher. :(

                  I always preferred touch ID.

    • +3

Honestly not interested in anything Apple.

  • How good are android tablets!!

    • Android tablets haven't got a very good track record in terms of software support and hardware. But this looks quality, with the 120hz screen, snapdragon 865+.. pretty much the top end specs.

Preorder and Toby deals don’t go well together, at the rate of Toby deals delivery time and preorder you’re probably gonna get it in 2021

    • I am still waiting for a phone processing email I ordered two weeks ago.

    • To be fair, once dispatched it arrives quickly.

It seems to be issues with most of the retailers from Hong Kong, they sell things not in stock, and don't let you know until you complain about it.

  • +4

    Wow! Look at that price .. :-( .. !!. My $300 Tab S1 10.5 (32 Gb, 5 Gb WiFi, 4G LTE) looks real good about now .. hasn't missed a beat in 6 years and can't see it being replaced any time soon .. :-) .. !!

    • does your battery drain really fast? Mine does

  • Ozbargain needs to BAN this seller FOREVER, currently dealing with them for warranty claims since I got a faulty Insta360 One R camera (fogging inside the lenses while outdoor recording video without touching any water), they use "physical damage" as excuse to end the warranty, I only got the camera LESS THAN ONE MONTH!!! I will see if PAYPAL can solve this issue for me or not.
