$389 for sunbeam machine is already good for me

  • +1

I have used one of these before. They are really good and if you like coffee and are working from home, it will pay itself off quickly. Not much different from what this produces to the coffee shop down the road

  • For people who have access, it's $862 for SS and $796 for Black Truffle from The Good Guys Commercial.

  • +2

Can vouch for this machine too, my 2nd Breville (nothing wrong with the first, just upgraded after 10 years service).

Pretty sure I paid ~$650 for it (black colour) in an eBay sale several months ago.

    • Yep. I paid the same. This really isn't a good deal.

      • I would say this is the best deal seen for the machine since start of COVID - coffee machines have been under high demand as of late

  • just wondering is there any diference between 1000dollars vs 200dollars machine?
i have Dedica Coffee Machine Black EC685BK for 200.。。。 for same coffee beans- same results? any better with this one?

    • +3

This has adjustable tempreture, preinfusion, steady pressure, built in bnurr grinder, quick heat up and good steaming pressure. Makes quite a difference.
Often $200 machines just run some hot water over ground coffee, the better machines do it consistently, at the correct temp at the right pressure.

The more expensive ones usually have more solid builds with less plastic and might feature dual pumps, heat exchangers, etc to froth milk at the same time as pouring espesso.

      • +1

        thank you
i have De'Longhi EC685M 200ish for years, just thinking about should I upgrade?

        • +2

My suggestion, the decision should depend on your ability to differentiate between the taste of two coffees.

Check the taste of the coffee you make at home tastes
Compare it to what is available at any coffee shop, which obviously has a high end machine
If there is a stark difference, and you value that difference then would make sense to spend more.

        • I'd say yes. Do you have a grinder? If not, the Breville Barista Express is a great option.

          • @Oldmate88: i have grinder also De'Longhi one
Breville Barista Express vs The Barista Pro ??

            thanks

i also have Breville Milk Frother, Silver BMF600BSS

            • -1

@crazyzhangjun: Bang for buck, Barista Express. It will proabbly come down in price soon too. Keep waiting and don't pay more than about $650. They're often on here.

Barista Pro looks nice and all, but there's been some complaints on reliability. Breville does have excellent customer service though.

              • @Oldmate88: thanks

                what about Sunbeam EM5300K ?

                • +1

@crazyzhangjun: I think it's Sunbeams first attempt at a machine with built in grinder, so I wouldn't.

Personally I have a Sunbeam e7000 + Breville Smart grinder pro and they work great together

    • +2

Throw your money away if you're getting a $200 machine. The very least you should get if you're planning on getting a machine is the breville barista express which can often be had for ~$600.

Just the fact that it gets hot enough and at a high enough pressure, while also siphoning water away after it pulls the shot, is 95% of what you need for pulling a solid shot. It comes with a good enough grinder.

      • thank you
i have De'Longhi EC685M 200ish for years, just thinking about should I upgrade?

        • I reckon upgrade. I started with the Delonghi icona pump machine in my younger years. Moved up to the breville barista express which I had for 3 years and was able to still sell it secondhand on fb marketplace for $450. Now that I'm able to afford it, I've bought a rocket machine and a separate higher end grinder from eureka.

However, the coffee you get out of a high end head exchanger machine vs the barista express is very difficult to tell - to most it's imperceptible. Whereas the sludge/muddy water that you get out of something like an icona vs the espresso shot of the barista express is night and day. Obvious even to the non-coffee aficionado.

Just palm off your dedica on fb marketplace for like $50 or something - at least you can use it to spoil yourself a decent bag of coffee with it too.

          • @Jaystea: thank you

my friends ask me to change the grinder,my one is DELONGHI - DEDICA GRINDER - KG 521.M
            is that good enough?

what about Breville Barista Express vs The Barista Pro ??

i also have Breville Milk Frother, Silver BMF600BSS

            • @crazyzhangjun: Sell it all.

Not much difference between express and barista pro except for $300. Maybe looks, maybe speed, some temperature control. If you have the cash and you like the looks, go pro, otherwise, express is as good as it gets.

The grinders that come with these machines will suffice.

Your friends are right - a grinder makes all the difference. But that's providing your method of extracting a shot actually works - IMO the lower end machines like delonghi icona etc. don't pull shots, they just push hot water through small holes - dirty sludgy water. In this instance, even the best grinder won't yield you a proper espresso.

              In order of importance:
              1. Beans + water
              2. Grinder
              3. Machine.

And in order of the minimum I would ever recommend:
              1. Aldi Lavazza beans and clean low particulate tap water (SE melb tap water is pretty good, check your water provider on google to get an idea).
              2. Breville Smart Grinder Pro - $169 when it's on sale
              3. Breville barista express - $599 on sale.

If you're looking to up your game, the upgrade pathway would follow the above in order of 1, 2, 3. Find some good beans you like, then upgrade your grinder ($700-$12000 range would suit most home coffee enthusiasts). Lastly, upgrade your machine if you have the money.

              • @Jaystea: Breville barista express - $599
                where could i find it?

or maybe I wait for ebay deal

                thanks

should I keep my Breville Milk Frother, Silver BMF600BSS ?
                or sell it anyway?

                • @crazyzhangjun: Sell it. You ain't gonna need it with the express, which has grinder, and milk frother in one machine.

Keep a look out, anywhere 599-699 is a fine price.

                  • @Jaystea: thanks

                    what about Sunbeam EM5300K ?

                    • @crazyzhangjun: As I had said before. My opinion is:

And in order of the minimum I would ever recommend:
                      1. Aldi Lavazza beans and clean low particulate tap water (SE melb tap water is pretty good, check your water provider on google to get an idea).
                      2. Breville Smart Grinder Pro - $169 when it's on sale
                      3. Breville barista express - $599 on sale.

If you're looking to up your game, the upgrade pathway would follow the above in order of 1, 2, 3. Find some good beans you like, then upgrade your > grinder ($700-$12000 range would suit most home coffee enthusiasts). Lastly, upgrade your machine if you have the money.

Apart from that unless you're wanting to ask about higher end machines like rocket, ECM, la marzocco - I have no opinion on alternatives such as sunbeam or other appliance-grade machines.

                      • @Jaystea: thank again

did you pay for extended warranty for the machine?
                        no-brainer??

                        • @crazyzhangjun: I personally almost never bother to pay for extended warranty. No point.

                          • +1

@Jaystea: thank you for your all replies today
i found I like Breville The Dynamic Duo pack
but…..i will wait for the sale

              • @Jaystea: Why get the 'barista express' if you also recommend getting a separate grinder? Wouldn't you be better off getting machine without a grinder so you get a better machine?

                • @xmail: Oh sorry I can see where I may have misconstrued what I was trying to say.

Breville express is all in one. Otherwise get the Breville smart grinder pro if you don’t have enough money to upgrade your current machine or if you drink filter/plunge/moka pot etc and don’t use a machine.

For those who have the express and want to up their coffee game, upgrade beans, then upgrade grinder to a prosumer level one and don’t use the express grinder.

                  • @Jaystea: Would using the grinder on the express rival a quality fine pre-ground coffee? I have a delonghi dedica and find I make the best coffee with a fine ground coffee. The pre-ground Aldi brand stuff is not fine enough and it doesn't produce a great result. Does the express grinder grind it finer than that?

With that in mind, do you think I would be better off with a good standalone grinder + dedica, standalone grinder + breville infuser, or using the breville express?

                    • @xmail: Depending on your budget. If I’m not wrong, I think the infuser is basically like the express without a grinder - if so, get a stand-alone grinder and pair it with the infuser.

To answer your first question, no. Reason being that you can get the best coffee going around pre ground for you, but the grind size might be wrong - coffee ruined. Plus after a few days it’s stale. That’s why pre ground is not recommended.

If your budget for a grinder is <$300 go for the Breville smart grinder pro which can be had for $169. Next step up is the 600-800 price range. Eureka silenzio, baratza sette 270wi, mini Mazzer electronic type D are my picks in that price range. The next level up should be looking at $1000-$1500 imo. But that’s really next level stuff.

      • Gotta agree with you there. Barista Express would be a good and relatively inexpensive upgrade from a entry level such as a EC685.

At the $900 mark a Gaggia Classic (plus a grinder) would be a upgrade

        • thanks
Gaggia Classic is 638 worth it? compares with Breville express?

          • @crazyzhangjun: They are two quite different machines, a Gaggia would be more for a enthusiast as it is more manual and getting the grind and dose on the machine would be important to getting a good coffee.

The Express is ok too as a entry level machine and popular because it's all in one (so you dont have to buy a seperate grinder) however the grinder has limitations but the machine can be forgiving too if using older roasted beans by using the pressurised filters that it comes with.

    • I recently upgraded from that exact machine to this exact Breville one haha

While the Dedica is a good machine, difference is night and day - better pressure (incl. non-pressurised baskets) = better flavour extraction, includes fully adjustable smart grinder, steam wand is much much better, quicker and quieter as well…very different machines at different price points

  • +1

Not really a deal at this price, I bought mine for around $650 from an eBay sale.

Great machine, although I just sent mine for repair. Had it for 9 months. Bit early to be breaking down I thought.

    • Nearly all the consumer machines have issues. If you want reliability, it's often better to get business class machines.

      • If you're going to spend that much though, Costco has a Jura machine for $1500

        • I was thinking more of something like Rancilio Silvia V6 + grinder as an example.

          • @onlinepred: Ah gotcha. I was thinking in the fully automatic space.

            • @[Deactivated]: Yea I believe most of this consumer style devices are mostly plastic components/gearing which is what generally fails later in life.

For those that have been waiting for a special on the BES920, it is currently $999 at Bing Lee. Well off previous OzBargain price records, but the best it has been for quite some time (and given most places only sell it as the Dynamic Duo with separate grinder, it's getting harder to find a good deal). I became impatient and have pulled the trigger on it.

    https://www.binglee.com.au/breville-bes920-the-dual-boiler

    • Thats the cheapest I have seen in quite some time. Did you purchase extended warranty as well?

      • I thought about it, but decided against it in the end. It comes with 2 year warranty, and I've read that pretty much all spare parts are available quite cheaply, and can be fixed yourself if you are somewhat handy.

  • From memory the extra money spent on Pro version vs Express was not worth it.

Here is a YT review that should explain more detail:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOSwiiXXZUA&t

    • Yeah agreed. I've read only average things about the Pro (the lack of pressure gauge being the biggest let down).

Some improvements in areas, but also new quality issues.

  • +1

Isn't this the normal price before any discounts?

  • +2

    BRING BACK THE EBAY SALE!

  • +3

Unrelated to the deal, but I've found the Aldi beans to be much better than both the Coles and Vittoria beans in my Breville. Better crema, better taste. They just seem fresher.

    • +5

I tried the Aldi Peru and threw them out afer 1 coffee. Was really disappointed after getting my hopes up. Definately worth buying proper roasted coffee or even roasting yourself.

      • Must depend on stores, then, as I haven't had a bad bag. I just get the generic one, though, not the specialty blends.

    • Don't you have a cafe near you? I mean if you like coffee, it's far better to get actual good beans. Otherwise yea it's just a matter of finding the best of the worst beans.

      • Even bp sells their coffee beans (if they have a wild bean cafe) which are surprisingly good.

    • Why are you buying a $1000 coffee machine to use supermarket beans?

      • I get fresh roasted beans as well, but the Aldi beans are "good enough" for daily coffee. And they're $12 a kilo instead of $40. To be fair, I only got the $500 machine.

      • Aldi beans arent bad. Sure you can spend $30 - $40 per kilo on freshly roasted beans, however are freshly roasted beans worth 3x the price, Im not sure
