You have to keep the pressure on. If you are serious about off-roading, then get one where you can remove the valve core. I can do 6 of my wheels in the time that my friends take to do 2.
If you only need it occasionally, my favorite is the Michelin gauge. $20 delivered at Amazon on sale and the same price at autobahn (usually $30).
