For new customers, bugger. Been using this for 6 years, does the job for my needs.

    • new customers would also be a much higher plan then your currently paying as well

      • really?Didn't know that.Had a look,you're right!
Not so long ago they had deals that were a considerable saving on what i'm paying. Guess those days are over.

    • just renewed mine, USD$39 - wish i could get it cheaper for renewing

Best offering yet on PIA. One year costing AU$65 works out at ~$7 after cashback,
two years at AU$114.85 is ~$12 after cash back. Had a great reputation, though many users noted speeds slowed. Also as a privacy tool it is still located within the five eyes so being in that jusrisdiction new privacy invasive laws apply to them, however they claim to not keep any logs.

    • I used to use them years ago purely cause while all VPNs claim they don't keep logs, PIA claim had actually been tested in court.

Edit: scrap that. They are completely compromised. A few comments below there are links to the details of their sale & how the parent company partners with companies like Google to provide ads while you VPN.

  • Does anyone know if "new customer" means "never been a PIA customer before" or is there scope for previous customers who haven't been an active customer for a while to qualify?

    • +7

New email = New customer ;)

    • Back in 2018 I was an existing customer, then on black Friday they had a similar deal. I created a new account and bought a 5yr plan, the existing time left on your current account is a write off.

      • I'd question that, last time I purchased a new plan on a good deal I still had 5 months remaining on my old account. I just sent PIA Support both account numbers and the key? I think it was and they added the old time to the new account without any issues.

  • Save me navigating PIA have unlimited accounts like some VPNs do now can't remember which

    • I think its like 8

  • How does it work out your email address? I clicked through Cashrewards and paid via Paypal and in two clicks it was confirmed and an email was sent to my email address - I did not get an opportunity to sign up with a new email address during the process?? At least I'm pretty sure I didn't… Does it use your registered Paypal or CR email?

Problem now is this email address it used is one I've previously used for PIA, which ended over a year ago… so I'm probably not going to be classed as a new customer.. :(

      paid via Paypal

Your PayPal email was used, then. The website is given your PayPal email address when you pay via PayPal.

      • +1

Figured that might've been the culprit… be warned anyone trying to sign up with a 'new' email address and paying by PayPal.

not found in cashrewards site.. ozbarganised

    • It's still there?

Thought it was a very good deal until I found these.

PIA was bought by Kape, a company which sends malware.

Surfshark is alot more ethical when judging by their google results and efforts against N*rdvpn

      • -1

someone said surfshark is reseller of nordvpn, dont know for sure but I have been using it for over a year now, cheapest vpn I have used ($15 after cashback) and still good

        • +1

Definitely not a reseller - they have legal cases against each other with N*rdvpn pulling some dodgy stuff on SurfS.
They are separate entities with no reselling involved.

          • @w37hsyea: Is nordvpn any good? What dodgy stuff are they pulling on surfshark?
I noticed Troy Hunt is now their "ambassador", does it mean anything in regards to their security, policy etc?

I used to be with pia but switched to protonvpn after the merger.

      • Would you mind sharing your experience/ Any notable differences?

        • +1

I pay for the service so can't remark on the free tier but it has been great so far with protonvpn. Differences are minimal between the two if you use the app. They offer the OpenVPN Configs for their servers also if you don't want to use the app. Speed wise has been great never missed a beat. Have it on my phone's and desktops

          • @TimboAus1234: They are far more expensive, but would have to be near best in class. Their entire business model with proton mail and now protonvpn is around privacy.

    • Thanks for the heads up. I used them years ago cause of that fbi case. Had no idea they had been bought. That's explains why this deal is ridiculously cheap. Subsidised by a tonne of advertising data.

Guessing PIA still doesn't support Netflix? :(
Having trouble getting HD stream quality with most major VPNs, so the search continues…

Been using these guys for a few years. Definitely going down hill. Not 1 server can achieve 60% of my ISP D/L speed. Problem with using HP desktop or laptop to config OpenVPN on the router. It will kill the wireless beams. It has been over a year and no solution. Absolute PITA.

    • What do u mean by kill wireless beams? How is it related..?

      • If you use HP to configure your router for OpenVPN. Your router wireless function will stop working. Even the LEDs will go off. It is a known issue with PIA. It's fine on other PCs. Of course PIA blame HP and HP of course say it is not their problem.

Welcome to prove me wrong but good luck to have to reset your router back to factory and re-configure. BTW, it will not work if you try to restore a saved profile. Wireless, both 2.4G and 5G will not reinstate. Strange but true.

        • It feels like this is written by someone who attends protests in Melbourne during lockdown.

          • @jobski: Welcome to email PIA to check. Otherwise, don't comment. You are not John Snow. He can get away with it. I can attach PIA email but people like you will say it is a fake.

    • I have no issues, can max out my 50Mbit connection even with European servers.

      • Great stuff. No overhead? Not even for encryption?

        • Of course there are overheads, that's the nature of VPN traffic.

  • I'm not sure if it's still the case but I jumped on a similar deal last year and was able to extend my existing account. I just had to contact support who were very responsive and it was near instant.

  • Was with PIA for two years, switched to another provider (Nord) following the merge. Bonus - much lower ping and vast improvement on dl / ul throughput. Con - PIA connection pools were super stable, Nord servers occasionally fail and require a manual switch for pfsense connections.

  • Just worth noting that PIA has merged their port forwarding servers to a new configuration which has messed up a lot of the openvpn configs for situations where you run docker…

there are still some "legacy" servers available but they have limited connections and you can get booted and then wait a fair while to get a new port forwarding connection open.

It may be in the process of being fixed… but that was the issue I was having in the last 2 weeks

How did you go when you raised a ticket through your account or contacted TA directly on here?

    • +1

Hi Tartar. BWS was a known issue across all cashback partners (see here) so your tracking would not have worked anywhere. If you clicked through Cashrewards, you would have received an email from us stating what you needed to do. As for Groupon, it's difficult for me to comment without knowing exactly how you transacted. All you need to do is lodge a claim and the issue will be taken care of.

    • Exactly why didn't you raise the case if you have any issue
Zero issues for me so far using the app most of the time

  • I am just stating the my experience. I don't understand why the negtive votes and admin disabling my comments.
Yes, I did raised tickets with Cash Rewards for both cases. the amount of effort.. sigh.. not worth it
