  • anyone waiting for the pcie gen 4 ssd? Hope 980 will come out soon which will be a perfect match with the zen 3

    • +2

I'm not convinced Samsung would be the brand to go for with PCIe gen 4 SSDs. The 980 pro will be using TLC NAND which is the same NAND that the 970 Evo and Evo Plus lineup uses as well as pretty much every single other Gen 3 SSD already. The current 970 Pro lineup uses MLC NAND, which at least is a tangible difference you pay for.

We will see if other manufacturers will go to QLC NAND or not but if they all stick with TLC NAND, I see no reason to buy Samsung anymore unless cashback gives enough back to make them cheaper than other NVMe drives.

      • Years ago, we said MLC was crap and SLC was what were should continue using for pro SSDs. That was the Intel X25-E 32 GB SLC ssd, with 250 MB/s read and 170MB/s write. We laugh at how slow those drives are now, and it won't be impossible that all we will have in a few years is only TLC and QLC. At that stage, QLC should have improved to the level of today's TLC.

        • Ended up getting this mate, just picked up from post office so will have a crack at cloning now.
Any suggestions for cloning app? Orig drive is Crucial P1. Assume put the new one in the 2nd M.2 slot to do it then swap around after done
          thanks!
