Like the FF above, most Uyghur reporting has been verified by multiple sources, if you only read about one unnamed source i think it is you who needs to read more broadly.

      • +3

but i'm fairly sure we can all accept that the atrocities of the CCP aren't just media spin

Yes it's literally pasted everywhere on the news. I don't really need to hear the same thing again, regurgitated from ozbargainers no less.

The jokes in this thread r just "haha china bad" to farm easy upvotes. Everyone wants to bring out the pitchforks at the slightest scent of china just because it's cool and trendy to shit on china now.

Save your virtue signalling for when you find someone actually advocating for the CCP.

        • +1

Seriously? Farm upvotes? And sell them at the local market? Who cares about uovotes?

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: ok so you read my entire post and all you got from it is that I care about upvotes?? Come on!

I'm suggesting that the joke comments are garbage because their only purpose is to echo the hive mind so they can attract upvotes.
The upvotes are the motivation behind the comments, NOT the issue.

Pretty weird that you pick out the most irrelevant part of my comment.

        bruh

Have to say…it must be terribly hard to govern a country with population of 1.4billion. Australia struggles to govern 25m people and took Sydney 35 years of debate to finally start building a second airport.

    • +2

well, thats why they want to keep control nice and tight. If they let everyone have a say, it'll take a lot of time to get things done. An example is when the covid outbreak hit hard, they were welding apartment doors together to stop people from leaving their blocks. That would be impossible in a democracy like ours. But in China, all you need is the nod.

      • Yeah exactly that. Demographics and population means every country will be governed completely different. Humanitarian issues aside, China growth and economic presence over the last 20 years has been phenomenal.

        • +1

Any then you should ask yourself, without humanity, whats the point of economic growth? Just to bring wealth to that 1% population?

          • -2

            @justwii: So true.

They've only come this far as they sunk to North Korean levels due to a previous maniacal dictator. Most Chinese are below the poverty line by Aussie standards.

          • @justwii: I think China has bought more people over the poverty line over the last 20 years. Is wealth still tied to top 1%? Absolutely but other countries suffer from the same and I would like to see increased philanthropy in China.

            • @Michaelz101: Well thats nothing amazing if a country is willing to sacrifice humanity, air quality, clear sky, food safety, to bring wealth to that 1%.

              • @justwii: It’s always easy to see other countries problems. Sydney complains about high rises yet we only have 12 million people. China has to accomodate a lot more than that. If we had billions in Australia I don’t think we will see a lot of greenery here also. Every country is different due to so many variables and it’s not just always the government in play.

                • @Michaelz101: Of course, we all get that but that's not the point, unless you are saying that's the way how it has to be in a billion people country.

        • What you are saying in a sense because of their economic growth & presence; you can kind of look away. This should never occur.

Bad things happen when good people look the other way

          • @airpoe: India has a similar sized population and has democracy, so these arguments make ni sense.

            • +2

@[Deactivated]: India or China, take a guess which country gets the most votes if one must choose to born into?

            • +2

@[Deactivated]: India also has a poverty issue as pointed out above where wealth is congregated in the top 1%. Every country is different. Not one country should governed the same and rightly so. You shouldn’t try to convince China to be Australia. Just like China shouldn’t convince Australia to be China. Different country, different political system, different population, different ideology.

  • CHINA!

    • Just watched Trump’s UN speech, China China China China China, why won’t this dude get a new topic, get tired after heard one word for thousands times, how about force Hungry Jacks to change back to Burger King? Burger Burger Burger!

      • -4

CORONA! But seriously, having Chinese tourists here isn't worth it.

        • +1

Australian businesses and politicians welcome Chinese tourists with open arms because they have generated a lot of money to the Aussie economy.

          • +2

@FrugalNotStingy: Oh please. They fly on Chinese airlines, take Chinese tours, buy made in China souvenior, stay in Chinese owned accomodation and eat Chinese food. They are a net negative because of the drain on rail, highway, landmarks, parks, resources, etc. More pollution, noise and waste.

They are only here because the politicians are bought and owned.

            • +3

@Emerald Owl: Oh please. The airlines, the tours, the hotels, the restaurants and the souvenirs shops all need to pay income tax for income they generated from the tourists. Which in turn our government makes money from them.

Buying Chinese made stuff here doesn’t mean the money stays in China. It depends on where the seller is located.

Who do you think pockets the most money if you were buying an iPhone that’s made in China? Apple or the Chinese factory that made the phone?

            • +1

@Emerald Owl: haha, then, should we never use or buy stuff made in China ?

              • @leooz123: If we stopped buying stuff that’s made in China then there will be no Kmart, $2 shops, more than half of Big W, Target, Myer, DJ stores would be empty. Apple stores would have nothing to sell. Other major retailers like HN, JBHifi, clothes shops (cheap or designer), furniture stores would have not much things to sell. 90% less OzB posts.

                • @FrugalNotStingy: yep, agree with u, that's what I was trying to say.
haha, few ppl posted some offensive comments here, I am curious whether they buy any stuff which is made in China?????????????? yes or no?

                  • @leooz123: Even Pauline Hanson cannot claim she doesn’t own or use anything that is made in China 😂

      • +2

Yes because his only Trump card (pun intended) for this upcoming election is his stance on China. So he keeps accusing, blaming, bullying China to stop China to become the top country.

Notice his presidential campaign is only all about how he claims he can hold back China and the COVID vaccine but not much else.

        • No, his campaign is about making America great again. It includes restoring constitutional rights, banning abortion, fixing immigration, lowering taxes, stopping socialism, stopping offensive wars, health care reform, etc.

Idk what source you have for that claim. You should at least watch a rally before making such claims.

          • @Emerald Owl: America under his charge will sure be doomed. No one in their right mind would ban abortion.

    Any deals on Mandalorian lessons?

  • This is a good deal. Thanks.

  • +2

One single loser negging the deal because he found the language offensive lol

    • Imagine finding a language offensive

      • Unrelated to the post but related to the comment of yours, there are languages I find rather very difficult to listen to. Would call them offensive as it’s like an assault on the ears.

Those who are dislike this deal are also the ones love the top deals on ozb

With most of the deals on ozb made in China…..

Easy to workout who are the hypocrites here….

    • At the time of writing, there are 3 dislikes. 2 of them are right after your comment meaning there was only 1 dislike when you wrote the comment. So is it just one person whom you’re targeting with the comment?

Say no to the language of communism

    • Damn, that means Korean, Russian and Vietnamese all out too!

      • +1

Yep, philosophy that is anti democracy and rule of law, is not welcome

        • I agree anti-democracy bad, but point is all these languages came before communist thought. There were also Australians that were part of the communist party here and all over the western world before from early 20th century onward, most spoke only English.
An argument that doesn't generalise the whole Chinese language community would be say no to simplified Chinese which has removed characters and reshaped Mandarin language to suit communism. The traditional Chinese languages and characters should be supported and live on in Taiwan, Hong Kong (for now anyway), and even in the very few non-ccp Chinese language media outlets here in Aus.

      • Oh darn, I shouldn't have learned Spanish either.

The comments on this OzB post are hilarious, two sides bloody arguing over politics in a deal offering free language classes. Go back to the opinion pages of the Herald Sun/SMH please.

    • English is more advantageous…

      • I have taken both. I didn't see the reason why not and my next move is entry-level Japanese/Spanish

  • Remind me this deal when Beijing Biden wins the president.

  • I only know a few words, 😞 Australia should speak native Chinese… Why you ask? I'm sure you know the answer to that.

Plus the trade wars going terrible, anyone know when we will be using yaun dollers in Australia.

    • Yawn, Yaun and Yuan…

      • 🤣😹🙊🙊 omg ah no, but I'll accept that

    • No such thing as "native Chinese".

  • Hiiiyaaa! Why I have a weird dream the CCP is after me?
