What Products Are Made Overseas That We Still Think Are Made in Australia?

Was browsing the supermarket aisle this afternoon and noticed that the Twix bars are made in Egypt and Snickers bars are Made in China.

Which got me wondering, what other things in supermarkets or stores are being made overseas, but we still have assumption they are made in Australia…?

Keen to know!

Was browsing the supermarket aisle this afternoon and noticed that the Twix bars are made in Egypt and Snickers bars are Made in China.

A lot of the production for Mars Brands was moved overseas while they upgrade their Ballarat Factories (which has been a few years now).

    • Maltesers chocolate bag - Australia
    • Maltesers Teasers bar - China
    • Bounty - The Netherlands
    • Twix - Egypt
    • Pods - Australia
    • Snickers - China
    • M&Ms bag - Australia
    • M&Ms bar - China
    • Mars bar - Australia
    • Maltesers Buttons - Australia
    • Interesting!
Will they go back to making them?

      • I remember reading that some will move back to Australia for production, but most will stay overseas.

        • That's disappointing. But I am not surprised!

        • I have been onto them about the Snickers as the CHINESE ones are different and taste it. They said it would only be for 6 months. That was 2 years ago.

@askme69: The twix tasted really weird as well. Biscuit was hard and tasted bitter!

          • @askme69: Yeah the peanuts are raw instead of roasted and the chocolate is waxy. Haven't had a snickers bar since they changed production. It's awful!

    • I usually check the made in labelling on the package - but when I buy my usual favours I seldomly check.

Thanks to you (seriously) - I’m now going to pay more attention (OCD!) to the labelling - 😆

I usually get suspicious when packaging has changed or the usual price drops. Oreos as an example.

That how I realised that Snickers moved to China. Their old packaging were longer and a matte finish packaging. The new ones are shorter and glossy finishing.

    • Wow, that's interesting. I noticed a lot of biscuits in ALDI are from NZ, but I think NZ has lax country of origin labelling laws, so they may be ultimately from other countries too?

      • -1

New Zealand does not have "lax country of origin labelling laws" - NZ unlike Australia does not require country of origin labelling, but if it is applied it must be truthful. If the label says "Made in New Zealand" then it is made in New Zealand, end of.

    • The Celebrations box has them made in Netherlands and Germany. Tastes good, better than the China Snickers.

Increasing amount of Uggs and RM Williams products are now made abroad. Cars are mostly no longer made in Australia.

I'm not really sure what Australia produces nowadays beyond crops, meat, niche crafts, soaps and souvenir stuff? Maybe the question should what's actually made here?

    • Yeah fair call! I mean ive been finding it hard where its made since they have put the 40% of this product is Australian sticker.

    • even crops won't always Aussie
      take frozen corn and peas
they have two different packaging that are placed in the same spot, depending whether they can get Aussie peas and corn..I always check now.

same with sunlong rice, long grain is not Aussie these days ( bad crop this year) they have Aussie long grain and it's said on the package

      very sneaky!

Century batteries. They are assembled overseas (Thailand IIRC) and filled with acid and the top glued on in 'Straya. They put the "Made in Aus" sticker on cause its not a battery until the chemical reaction occurs.

    • In a word crap.

      As per the logo guidelines

You can claim Australian Made if the product has undergone its last substantial transformation in Australia.

So what you are saying happens would apply as Australian Made. But yes I agree, its not really fully made here. Just put together.

I legit put in a Century Battery last week.
Their main selling point is because its Made in Australia, thats a reason why I bought it..

All the souveniors (magnets, keychains, etc) which have Australia or Sydney, etc on them.
Alot of the Aboriginal dot painting that's cheap.

At this point, the economic benefit of immigration is ever decreasing because immigrants buy an even higher percentage of foreign goods, especially food.

Probably common knowledge but most Blundstone boots are now made offshore, I think the rubber boots are still made in Aus?
Oliver boots are also made offshore too.

A large percentage of supermarket bacon is imported.

Pretty much all of the Australian Defence Force issued clothing is made overseas

    • China?

All over, Laos, Taiwan, Cambodia as well etc

Whatever the cheapest bidder is… I was more than surprised when the ADF went with RM williams for dress boots.

        • +1

Join the ADF for some boots?

I think combat uniforms and boots are made in Oz. It’s just the dress stuff that isn’t.

@Emerald Owl: Correct, anything that is I guess you would say 'patented'… like Army AMCU, RAAF GPU or Navy DPNU etc is made in Australia, but lots of other items of clothing or issued equipment not so much.

@Pelicannn: That makes more sense in my head now. When my home country had changes to the patterns to those digital ones, one argument was that the patterns have been out for so long that it's circulating outside the military.

    • +4

I am surprised. I thought military is bit more against the idea about anything being outsourced abroad due to security reasons.

      • Yeah same, but in saying that not shocked that we are looking for cheap stuff to save a buck after spending billions on planes haha

        • +1

Be fair, every cent counts is practically why we are on Ozbargain, so can't blame them.

        • +1

Of course more things are made abroad - cheaper wages and so much wasted federal money - given away to yanks and liberal funders - means government doen't buy australian made.

We're a banana republic these days… no love by our pollies for Australia

Penny Boards, "Australia Since Forever" does not mean Made in Australia.

  • +4

Not directly related, but now with increased online shopping, it is even more difficult to work out where something is made. It is hard to buy anything made in Australia now, but it is getting more difficult to determine where things are made. If we have to buy products made overseas it would be nice to avoid products made in countries with oppressive regimes for example.

Gluten found in self raising flour and other products. It's produced and sold in Australia but if you're mass producing you can get more for less in quicker time from China.

I use self raising flour as a good example as you'll find the labelling on a lot of brands is close to 100% Australian made and that's why.

funny thing is, a lot of the "imported" beer is actually made here, but they charge like wounded bulls

    • Yeah, that Asahi you are drinking is made in Australia, tastes terrible compared to the original and cost as much as if they were importing it.

      • I thought it was made in Australia (even though I'm pretty sure it always mentions Japan somewhere on the advertising) but I just finished a carton a couple of weeks ago, and as I was taking a sip of the last bottle I saw 'Made in China' on the lable. I'm not buying it again.

        • bottles are made here, china and singapore under license.
cans are made in japan, both the 350 and 500 mls

Even if you think they are Australian made, they are most probably foreign owned.

Donald's MAGA placards, banners, US flags, caps etc are made in China

His horrible suits and ties are made there as well.

Almost all is made overseas, it's cheaper for them, gives them higher profit margin.

Most things can be made at home:

    Twix

    Mars
    https://www.instructables.com/id/Mars-Bars/

    Bounty
    https://www.notenoughcinnamon.com/easy-homemade-bounty-aka-m…

Made hazelnut butter but decided to turn it into Nutella, didn't check the proportions, added way too much chocolate and it's chunky..taste gazillion times better than store bought. Took almost no time. Threw nuts into the food processor and stopped a few times to scrape the sides.. added a bit of salt. that is it.
