[PS5] Free Upgrade From PS4 - Watch Dogs Legion, Marvel's Avengers, Far Cry 6, Cyberpunk 2077 + More (Save up to $10 @Amazon AU)

2450

Update: thanks to @sween64, he has shared a list he found on reddit(?) with titles listed for upgrade and the source that confirms it.

I've seen people mentioning a lot that you can buy cheaper PS4 games and get a free upgrade. So I thought I'd bring together the definitive list (best I could find it) with amazon references below. Some companies (like Ubisoft) are offering upgrades to disc and discless version (but disc version require the disc versions of new consoles), whereas PlayStation haven't confirmed what the process looks like (to the best of my knowledge).

The biggest savings seems to be $10 on a handful of games.

Game PS4 PS5
Assassin's Creed Valhalla $69 $79
Cyberpunk 2077 $79 ——-
Dead By Daylight $52.30 ——-
Destiny 2 $16.04 ——-
Dirt 5 $78 ——-
Doom Eternal $44.66 ——-
Far Cry 6 $69 $79
FIFA 21 $69 ——-
For Honour $24 ——-
Fortnite ——- ——-
Grounded ——- ——-
Hitman 3 ——- ——-
Horizon Forbidden West ——- ——-
Kena: Bridge of Spirits ——- ——-
Maneater $49 $49
Marvel's Avengers $69 ——-
Marvel's Spider-Man Miles Morales $79 $89 $94
Mortal Kombat 11 $29 ——-
NBA 2K21 Mamba Forever* $134.84 $139
Outriders $79 ——-
Rainbow Six Siege $19 ——-
Sackboy A Big Adventure $89 $99 $96.99
The Elder Scrolls Online $39.95 ——-
The Witcher 3 $39 ——-
Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 $69 ——-
Watch Dogs Legion $69 $79

*NBA 2K21is a little strange (thanks @Phreakuency). You only get the upgrade if you get the Mamba Forever version. So though this is what I've used for comparison in the table, the base game on PS5 is actually only $88 and probably makes more sense to get if you don't care about the extra content.

Does anyone know if both ps4 and ps5 controllers will be compatible while playing the ps4 disc on a ps5?

    • +2

      Apparently so. Found this on the web;

"Sony says that existing DualShock 4 controllers and officially licensed third-party PS4 controllers “will work with supported PS4 games"

    • +2

Games that are PS4 backwards compatible on PS5 will work with DualShock 4 controller.

Any games that are full PS5 upgrade are unlikely to work and will need DualSense controller. This will be on a case by case basis and will need to wait for more info.

      • +1

Maybe this is a silly question, but will the DualSense controller work on PS4 games? I'm assuming so.

        • +5

Yes of course. Any PS4 games on PS5 will be playable with DualSense.

    • Play a PS4 Game: Dual Shock or Dual Sense
Play a PS5 Game: Dual Sense only

    • Apparently yes, but Sony still recommend playing PS4 games with a PS4 controller. But for these games with the full on upgrade for the PS5 the controls will be native to the PS5 controller, not the PS4 controller. It's not just backwards compatible, you're getting the full PS5 version when you put your PS4 disc in. The code on the PS4 disc isn't even being executed, it's just a license for the PS5 version you download online.

So according to Sony you will ideally want a PS4 controller around for backwards compatible PS4 games. But for games that were upgraded from the PS4 version to the PS5 version the PS5 controller is the one you'll want to use.

It's kind of annoying that the answers to this question are all on the second page and are only revealed after we each answer it.

  • Any one know what the deal is with Spidee-Man? IE, are there two versions, a remaster and then just backwards compatible?

      • +1

Not really… I wanna know if my PS4 disc will work in PS5… I read your old saves won't work in the "remaster"

        • Your existing PS4 disc will work on PS5 as 'PS4 edition'. It will not be upgradeable to the Remastered edition.

          • @Hybroid: K. Makes little difference to me in the end, I bought the DLC a few days ago, Sony not getting anymore of money.

I'm sure they'll give away the remaster once reddit starts filling up with comments that the "remaster looks like crap" and then someone else chimes in he should be thankful his save games worked.

            • @jonathonsunshine: I don't understand why you feel entitled to a remastered upgrade for free? It's rebuilt from the ground up.

Many art assets have been updated to take advantage of the PS5 console’s horsepower. Better-looking characters w/ improved skin, eyes, hair, and facial animation Ray-traced reflections and ambient shadows, improved lighting, more pedestrians and vehicles stretching into distance

Optional performance mode for a targeted 60fps frame rate. Near-instant loading, 3D audio, DualSense controller’s haptic feedback. Three suits, new photo mode features, and even new trophies

              • @Hybroid: I remember one of the PS5 reveals talking about Spiderman having near instant load times, don't remember anything about having to buy a remaster though. Feels like a bait and switch.

                • @jonathonsunshine: How? You bought the PS4 version, you got the PS4 version. They never promised a PS5 upgraded version bundled for free 2 years later.

                  • @Hybroid: I never said I was entitled to anything. But at the same time they were crowing "full backwards compatibility", they were going around the convention circuit showing this. (Vids in the second link). They never said anything about having to buy a remaster.

So thinking about it some more, if they had to completely rebuild the game then that presentation was a bit of a mislead overall.

                    https://www.t3.com/au/news/secret-of-ps5-speedy-loading-time…

PS5 lead architect, Mark Cerney, demonstrated the speed of the new console's SSD by using Marvel's Spider-Man loading times as an example. On the PS4, the loading time was 15 seconds, while on the PS5 dev kit, that was shaved down to 0.8 seconds - a whopping 18 times faster than Sony's current machine.

                    https://www.gamesradar.com/au/ps5-gameplay-reveal/

During a demonstration, footage was presented by Sony comparing Spider-Man PS4 running on both the current-gen system and the PS5, and tech journalist Takashi Mochizuki recorded the whole thing for public consumption, as seen below. On the PS4 Pro, Sony revealed that Spider-Man PS4 takes 8.10 seconds to load up, whereas on the PS5, that loading time is reduced to 0.8 seconds.

        • +1

Your existing PS4 disc will work on PS5 as 'PS4 edition'. It will not be upgradeable to the Remastered edition.

          This!!!

Also the remastered edition is not being sold as a stand alone product, you need to buy it as part of a combo with the new Miles Morales game

  • +1

I’m surprised any ozbargainer opted for the disc version. Will cost many hundreds more over the course of the generation. Missing out on sales and second hand copies will hurt.

    • +16

      You mean disc-less version?

      • +2

        Ah shit. Yes. Disc-less.

    • Hopefully, this kludgy hack will still work … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWSIFh8ICaA

    • +1

How so? I would have thought a true OBer wouold take the hit on the cost of the machine for the cheaper games down the track. You rarely get a digital game cheaper than the disc?

You also cant use the EB guarantee for digital games

      • +5

Almost positive he means the discless version, an he can't edit it now cause people have replied

    • You obviously meant digital. Hopefully every OZB got the disc version.

    • You probably meant "discless" and yes it would be extremely poor foresight to get discless because you can't sell your used game.

Discless only makes sense if you plan on playing only 2-3 games for the lifespan of the PS5

  • Isnt the ps5 supposed to be backward compatible anyway?

    • +1

Yep. But there's a difference between playing a PS4 game on the PS5, and playing the PS5 upgraded version on the PS5. Basically these upgrades mean all the assets (models, textures, performance) etc upgrades.

      • Hope Rockstar upgrade read dead redemption 2. Seriously needs to make it run at 60 fps. Or something to make it more responsive.

  • do the ps4 ones you buy online automatically upgrade?

    • Some will, some (most) won't. It's up to each developer what they want to offer.

      • What about if one has a PS4 as well? Can the digital upgrade be played on the PS5 while the original digital one is playable on the PS4?
Hopefully someone can shed some light on this?

        • That's a commonly asked question that we don't know the explicit answer to yet. Suggestions are it should be fine if downloaded on both but we don't know 100%.

  • +3

This spreadsheet has a free upgrade column. Pretty sure I came across it from reddit/ps5

    • There's 18 title on the list at the moment, you might have them all.

      • +1

Thanks for sharing. Lists like these will become essential for OzBargainers!

  • +1

This is a great resource, easy $10 (or more) saving on a whole bunch of games. Hopefully Miles Morales PS4 will get a store page soon. I locked in a $79 pre-order for the PS5 version before Amazon raised the price to $94, but the PS4 version should be much cheaper.

  • Anyone know if the Tony Hawk remake will get a free upgrade on PS5?

    • +1

Yes, all PS4 titles submitted for certification after 13th July 2020 must also be compatible with PlayStation 5.

  • I wonder how it's going to work for FIFA 21.. I purchased the Ultimate Edition last month..

  • +1

I wouldn't be relying on the dev's to provide any meaningful upgrade once PS5 is launched.

They each have been reluctant to be transparent on exactly when the upgrades will be available, how we can access the upgrades and will it be a like for like copy with what would be purchased as a PS5 game.

    • +1

Unless the publisher/developer states that the patch upgrade will be available upon PS5 launch, i'll opt for the PS5 copy

      • +1

        same

  • Surprised no Grand Theft Auto 5

    • 2021 for next-gen upgrade. No confirmation if it'll be free or not (highly unlikely).

    • Glad there isn't. Time better spent on developing GTA6

      • Wonder if I'll be able to free upgrade my PS3 version.

  • so in comparison what are microsoft charging for system x game upgrades?

whoops forgot this "Our commitment to compatibility means existing Xbox One games, including backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, look and play better than ever before. Your favorite games, including titles in Xbox Game Pass, benefit from steadier framerates, faster load times and improved resolution and visual fidelity – all with no developer work required. Your Xbox One gaming accessories also come forward with you."

Plus, with Xbox Series X's Smart Delivery feature, for any game that supports the tech, if you buy it on Xbox One, you can then get the Xbox Series X version for free. "

its no wonder sony zenz's are working overtime.

I have to sell my PS4 Pro first.. LOLL

    • They are going on ebay for nearly as much as as a ps5

  • +1

Amazed that "you need the disc for disc versions" has to be mentioned.

  • Just noticed that Spider-Man Miles Morales has jumped from $79 to $94! Lucky I pre-ordered when I did.

    • +1

Expecting it to be $69 on release day by BigW or JB once they realise there isn't enough PS5 disc units to meet the stock of the games

  • Noob here.
I'm waiting for my ps5 which will be my first ever console, so it's obvious I don't have any of these games currently.
I bought a US PSN+ plus account from this deal which will give me access to some good titles. Is this good enough me to get started with?
I wanted to get Spider man miles morales but now Amazon has increased the price from $79 to $94, so I don't feel like spend 100 bucks for a game.

    • +2

The PS+ games coming on release will keep you busy for AGES. I would wait until release day for Spiderman and go for a BigW copy at this rate. :)

  • Some of these may not transfer PS4 saves over when the ps5 upgrade comes. Some of these games won't upgrade on day 1 as well so if you start up AC Valhalla and get dozens of hours into the campaign you may find the ps5 version upgrade is available at a later date and you can't just load in your 40 hour save from PS4 version.

    • Not able to transfer game saves stops me from buying on PS4. Maybe that's why they are doing it…
Will that be the same for digital upgrade ones as well?

      • game saves because of region locks have always been a negative because of sony's approach - xbox is much easier to deal with.

      • I am speculating here based on past experience between console generations. PS4 to PS5 save migration It is not impossible and it would depend on a title by title basis, but it is a development cost to factor in and some devs/publishers might not bother. They might say, "Free upgrade to PS5 for all PS4 physical and digital owners" but fail to mention save transfer issues. If a game has to be built for the new ultra fast SSD and includes ray tracing and other under the hood coding to get it to run prettier on PS5, the save games from the PS4 version just might be too much effort to support when upgrading to PS5.

  • Are all the ps4 games on Amazon the disk version, so you have to have the disk version of the Ps5?

Also, why are no ps5 games listed on the playstation store?

    • no digital store on amazon.au and amazon.us increasingly screwed down even with vpn.

us market segmentation to gouge is endorsed by all 5 eyes countries because they are now all yank banana republics.

    • Also, why are no ps5 games listed on the playstation store?

They will appear at launch, or maybe just before it.

  • Noob question…

If I have the PS4 version of a game, but 'upgrade' to the PS5 version, will I essentially be playing a PS4 (Pro) game on PS5 hardware?

Or does it improve the graphics etc to a higher res / faster fps?

    • Maybe a small improvement in framerate, but PS4 games will look and play on PS5 just as they do on PS4.

    • depends on whether sony have insisted on it - very oblique statements from sony on this point so far..

  • Is it the same deal for Xbox Series X?

Xbox One games getting a free upgrade to XSX?

    • Yes, also Microsoft isn't charging for their own game upgrades like the Spiderman game. plus I think there's more games doing free upgrades on the Xbox.

  • Sold my PS5 Pro for $500 a couple months ago in prep for this (☞゚ヮ゚)☞ … But HOW THE F$#K is sackboy more money the cyber punk?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

    • (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

how dare you sir or madam, to copy me..

  • ┐(´(エ)`)┌

    • ʕっ•ᴥ•ʔっ

      • ლ(´ ❥ `ლ)

  • Control struggled on ps4 did better on xbox but not great. Of all recent games probably the one meriting a ramp, but apparently 505 games are charging for it on both platforms. I hope microsoft ditch 505 quick because smart delivery just took one in the eye - gouging at its finest.

  • I heard that if you upgrade your version you cant give it to others and let them get the upgraded version as well.

Anyone seen a source on this?

  • Yakuza Like a Virgin Dragon is also getting a free update to ps5.

  • Original post needs an update. PS4 Miles Morales gets a free PS5 upgrade.

    • It's already on the list, Amazon just doesn't have a listing for it yet so there's no link for it :)

  • Mortal Kombat 11 is getting free upgrade.

  • For Honor is getting free upgrade.

    https://forhonor.ubisoft.com/game/en-us/news-community/152-3…

    $10 on Amazon for Xbox!

  • So does that mean I can buy these games physically for PS4 and I should have the ability to download the digital copy for PS5?

    • Yes. The only catch it whenever you play the digital PS5 version you will need to have the PS4 disc inserted. Also, not all these games are having the upgrades available on release. For example, Avengers have delayed the release of the next gen upgrade version.

      • Damn, I thought it was a list of games where if you would register the disc version, it would allow you to play them on the non-disc drive version of the PS5.

  • I had a reminder on to come back to this post today.. Not sure why I don't even have a ps5

Maybe in Sept 2020 I thought I would by now 😁

Sorry to drag up an old thread, HNY! 🥳
