    VA panel :(

    • +12

I was looking for an IPS too but there was no way I was gonna pass up $534 for a 144hz ultrawide

      • same here, I am waiting for promotion for the AW3420DW

    • -3

Not all of them are bad, but this one isn't great:

That review actually says it's a very good display, and while it's not the best in class, it's very good for a mid-range product.

I've been using one daily for both work and games for a month or so, and it's been utterly faultless in every application I've tried.

At this price, it's an absolute bargain.

        • +2

Yeah, pretty much the review says it's not nearly as good as the LG IPS, but it is $1600 ish.

But in terms of the next level down, its as good as other mid ranges in this price catergory while being quiet a bit cheaper.

Its better than the AOC ($879) and has slightly worse as motion than the Niexus ($739 USD and you can't buy it here), but has better contrast.

Personally i really like mine, was a huge upgrade from my previous AOC G1. It's not perfect but great for the price, and personally if i was going to spend the next price bracket up being $1600, i would probabaly pay a bit more and get a LG OLED TV instead.

        • It's a great display, bought it for $579 from Gearbite in August.

I've also been using this for work and games without any issues. At first I was hesitant due to people saying that VA panels have a ghosting issue but it hasn't been a problem for me in any games from Metro Exodus to MSFS 2020.

Gearbite support was really great, monitor was delivered in a few days. I also lost a part (switching between monitor arms and stand) and Gearbite sent me a replacement without any hassle.

        • -1

I don't rate it at all as a gaming monitor, and that's what the response time testing and pursuit photography shows.

As a VA ultrawide it's good value, but I'd only suggest it as an all-rounder for casual gaming requirements, not if you're looking to hone in on anything like high refresh rate gaming or colour work or intense productivity work.

          • +1

@jasswolf: Perhaps you're particularly sensitive to it? Or maybe you just have extremely high standards.

I'm playing e-sports and shooter games on this monitor at high frame-rates for 2-3 hours a night and it's been outstanding.

I'm also using the same screen for productivity tasks and 3D modelling for 8 hours during the day.

It's not quite as nice as the Predator X34 but it's pretty darn close to my eyes - I certainly wouldn't pay the extra $1000 for the very slight improvements the Acer offers.

            • -1

@klaw81: I'm certainly not advocating for buying other ultrawides, just not a fan of budget VA compared to what Samsung has recently launched.

Looking forward to a price drop on the G7 over the coming months.

          • -1

@jasswolf: Have you used it or are you just going off stats and reviews?

            • @Joker042: Technical reviews and pursuit camera footage, both still and in motion. Or are you refuting objective measurements as being relevant in revealing subjective experience?

You can see what the test scores are showing on videos of motion pursuit alone, that's how sluggish some of the darker transitions are. Not a true 144 Hz monitor, even accounting for some of the caveats of VA, but it's hardly alone when it comes to budget and mid-range VA options. I've used budget VA before, and it's not for me for a long-term gaming monitor.

Like I wrote earlier, I'll be getting the Samsung G7 when it drops in price, because that's a proper smooth motion experience for VA, and at 1440p 240Hz no less.

              • @jasswolf:

but it's hardly alone when it comes to budget and mid-range VA options

Can you link similar monitors for <600?

                • +1

@BROKENKEYBOARD: You're on a bargain website, look them up.

If your query is value for money for an ultrawide, no one is disputing that. People who think that this is a viable 144Hz monitor for competitive gaming or dark/high contrast games are overlooking the obvious flaws.

With any luck we'll soon have solid 16:9 QHD 144Hz panels that are derived from the same tech in the G7 and G9, and that's where I'd direct people to for a good VA gaming experience.

                  • @jasswolf:

You're on a bargain website, look them up.

Couldn't find any, these monitors regularly get high upvotes so why not post these other monitors?

People who think that this is a viable 144Hz monitor for competitive gaming or dark/high contrast games are overlooking the obvious flaws.

You should specifically state that next time instead of vaguely saying the monitor isn't great, it is a bargain website after all where most people would be happy to save $ and wouldn't see the big difference as you make it out to be.

              • @jasswolf: Oh no, I have no doubt your stats are correct. I've just seen a lot of armchair warriors who obsess over stats that don't make any real world difference.

                Thanks for your comments.

        • Using it for both work and games make so much sense since the colour gamut isn't even an issue on this monitor (It is for many high refresh rate gaming monitors)

A 121% sRGB and 85% NTSC is really quite amazing, and this deal is too good to miss for anyone in the monitor industry atm searching for a single 34"

This is perfect since you don't even require a dual monitor setup due to the absolute size of this monitor :)

    • VA are generally superior to IPS for gaming and media consumption. Most modern VA panels have high enough response times so historic ghosting problems are barely noticed, whereas IPS still has washed out colours from low contrast and IPS glow (which is more significant in UW panels).

Plus VA are a lot cheaper and budget VA is usually decent, whereas budget IPS is awful. Of course, this all varies a lot between different panels and monitors, so it's always worth checking out reputable reviews before purchasing.

  • +3

Is VA really that bad compared to IPS?

    • +16

VA has deeper blacks but with the downside of smearing / ghosting… but they are much cheaper at a high refresh rate

IPS has less motion blur but at the expense of exhibiting IPS glow (sometimes) and also higher cost if you want high refresh rate

Both have their pros and cons, it's not like IPS is always the superior choice. However most gamers will regard IPS as the 'premium' choice because while you can put up with IPS glow (just don't dim the lights in your room) you cannot really fully mitigate VA panel ghosting, even with Overdrive set to maximum or turning on Backlight Strobing

      • +4

True, but the level of smearing varies a lot from panel to panel, I can easily put up with the level of ghosting on my monitor.

    • +4

If your a big gamer, yes it's a lot worse. The smearing is pretty bad on this model, it's been reviewed extensively. 20-30ms dark shade… it needs to be 6.7ms for 144hz.

      • big gamer as in, what about sim racing?

    • +7

Comes down to your personal requirements.

As someone who's mostly stopped gaming and spends way too much time sitting at a PC and not enough time sleeping, VA's tend to be the superior choice for me now. I often like to work in a more dimly lit room, which wasn't very practical with my IPS monitors, the glow was harsh on my eyes. Switching to VA was a big improvement in that use case, and personally I think they are an all-round improvement for pretty much everything besides fast paced competitive games. My VA's need significantly less backlight brightness to produce a decent quality image, I'm not sure how much of that is due to IPS vs VA and how much was related to the specific monitor models, but my eyes are pretty happy about the change.

Should note that troubles with brightness/glare issues tend to be exaggerated by your screen area. 34" in ultrawide format is pretty small really cause they're not very tall. Running two of them side by side would be less than half the screen area that I'm working with atm.

  • +8

Have no idea why TN panels aren't popular any more, I just love my Acer Predator 144hz, 1ms refresh rate, zero ghostin, zero smearing, bleeding etc. Colours are absolutely amazing. In all honesty I have no idea who cares about viewing angles, it's not a TV it's a PC monitor for yourself to use sitting straight in front of it.

    • +8

Have no idea why TN panels aren't popular any more
They absolutely are, lots of high selling TN monitors.

Tbh I think a lot of people just regurgitate 'gotta have IPS' because it's what they've heard, this is an excellent option for the price.

    • -1

Because there are now IPS and VA panels that are faster with none of the downsides of TN

    • +8

Because gaming IPS panels are just as fast now and VA are super cheap. There is no reason to keep TN in production when almost nobody bought them. Office/home/casual buyers = IPS/VA. The only people who cared about the TN response advantage were a small minority of gamers.

    • +7

The colours are never right on TN panels.

For someone who is colourblind or simply doesn't care about colours, TN is probably fine.

    • +1

They are still popular for smaller screens. The reason VA panels are being used for ultrawides is because they keep a consistent colour / contrast at both horizontal and vertical angles - which is really important for a screen this wide. If you used a TN panel then the discolouration would be really noticeable. The disruption to contrast may make it useless without moving your head to the left and right.

      • I recently got this monitor, I have noticed that the conrast/colour chages quiet a bit. If i stand up (compared to sitting down) the deep blacks turn to grey. Would you think this is panel specific? Should i resturn this? This difference is especially pronounced when i have night light (eye protection/blue light filter) on, it basically is yellow when u sit correctly, otherwise, it goes really close to blue light/no filter.

Also, there is smearning when i watch movies, especially during fast paced scenes.
Would you think this is cuz of HDMI? As its connected to an XPS13, i get a max of 60hz (maybe the default was 59/50, not too sure though) Any feedback would be nice.

        • +1

I am not sure personally, but it's worth doing some research. I think there is still colour / contrast change on VA panels but it would just be far worse on TN. But it's been a few years since I looked at it all.

        • +1

I've been watching several youtube reviews of this monitor.
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1hMAw8xCd0Y

I believe HDMI was mentioned as being bad, and that DisplayPort should be used.

        • It is normal if the screen angle is bad. This doesn't happen with OLED.

    • OLED is where its at

    • +1

      no idea

Because the colour reproduction looks shit compared to IPS regardless of which angle you sit at.

    • TN is fine for gaming (fast pace game). However, for movies / videos, and image processing, the colours are just nowhere near as good as VA or IPS. You might think looking it directly wouldn't be an issue. However, with wide screen, even your eyes aren't looking at the entire screen all at straight angles (not at the edges of the screen for example). TN suffers from both colour shift and contrast shift.

If 90%+ usage on the screen is for gaming, the TN is worth considering. However, for normal day to day use, IPS or VA is better.

FFS I just bought this from gearbite on catch of the day for 600.

    • Same, it's already in the post :(

    • there will always be a better deal…soon it will be under $500.

  • pulled the trigger, was wondering if I should wait for sub 500…

    • Same thoughts ;)

    • +4

I’ll wait for singles day and Black Friday. Can’t wait till it drops to $450.

  • +2

When sub 500 I'm jumping on it.

    • +34

I don't recommend jumping on any monitor, especially curved ones. Might void warranty.

  • Thanks. I'm going back to the office in the next fortnight and this will be a great monitor to use when I work from home. I was also able to use my $5 eBay plus monthly voucher as well.

    • Just note, if you bought this using the cashback then it will be void with the use of the $5 voucher, might need to re-order and cancel that current order.

      • Thanks, I forgot about how you can't use voucher codes with eBay and cashback.

    • they still have those vouchers?

      • Yeah, you get them once a month if you have plus. Hardly ever use them as I use Amazon so much more now.

        • I have plus but stopped receiving them early in the year :( but have been using amazon more as well

  • I'm not a gamer but interested In an ultrawide at this price. I work from home and mainly use Chrome for research and Google Docs. Will Chrome look pixelated with a screen this size and resolution?

    • +5

Nope, running Chrome on it right now and it's deliciously crispy. Ultrawides are great for running 3 documents side by side at full size.

Install the free MS PowerToys application and use the FancyZones tool for easy window snapping for any custom arrangement you like. Super powerful software, highly recommended.

      • Thanks for the tip about PowerToys, had this monitor a week and love it but was the icing on the cake.

    • +1

I bought this monitor to replace my old 3x Samsung S27A950D monitors (which were great, picture is sharp and colours are great, but stand is horrible).

Anyway, I run the Xiaomi connected to my work laptop and home gaming rig (both at home due to working from home). I can definitely tell the difference between devices and image quality.

Home rig runs 2070 Super and it's crystal clear and sharp as you'd expect (running at 1440p), and is much sharper than my earlier Samsung (1080p). But when the laptop image comes up (HP Elitebook x360 with onboard graphics) it's definitely a downgrade from my S27A950D (which I run side by side with the Xiaomi).

My work IT has locked my ability to update the laptop graphics drivers, such that my Xiaomi only runs at 1080p (at proper aspect ratio), and it is noticeably grainy. But again, at proper 1440p, I don't notice any issue with pixel/grains.

      • Should be able to view it natively without fiddling with the drivers… You're using DP?

        • Monitor connects via DP to a workstation dock, which is connected to laptop via USB C.

Only 1440p option for the Xiaomi in the display settings is 1720 x 1440… >:(

          • +1

@Porker: Limitation maybe within your dock…

Check specs for your dock to see what max resolution it supports…

          • +1

@Porker: I'm running mine over HDMI from HP dock, and TB3 from dock to work laptop. That gives me full 3440x1440 resolution at 120Hz, which is definitely overkill for productivity purposes.

Does your Elitebook have a dedicated video output? You should be able to get full resolution from that.

            • @klaw81: Thanks - no it's an on-board GPU. :(

  • If only PS4 Pro and Switch supports ultra wide I wouldn't hesitate.

  • ebay is offering me a 50$ coupon code for this monitor?

  • shopback 10%

But i thought everyone deleted their SB accounts ;p

    • +1

why? What has been leaked has been leaked right?

  • Hello,
does the monitor have embedded speakers?
    thanks

    • No, does have phono out though.

  • +3

I don't see why this is a deal. the price was that for pretty much the last month.

  • Just thoughts fellows, I have purchased the 27 inch Alienware monitor, I know it's not high res ones, aside of that is it good for PS5 gaming?thanks

Cashrewards says 15.00% cash back at eBay Australia - Am I missing something here?

    • +4

Cashrewards 15% is capped at $25, Shopback 10% + $5 is uncapped so $64.90 here.

      • +1

ok thanks! dont have a shopback account - time to make one :P

        • +1

Make sure to use your spam email account and don't submit your bank account details for withdrawing money, use Paypal.

          • @unco: :( didnt know you can paypal, will change after the incident

      • im sitting here trying to workout how to use cashback lol

  • Saw this in store today at JW computers. Not bad, not great but ok. Plastic felt a little cheap to me but the screen looked good

  • I was able to overclock to 147hz if you were interested…

  • +1

Bought one of these months ago and its a good purchase IF you're into games that arent FPS(CSGO, Apex, Valorant) . The 4ms causes terrible blurring and is hard to unsee coming from a 1ms 1080P monitor. Other than thats its pretty solid and i like its minimalistic design :)

    • Good to know - sounds unbearable.

  • I can wait! For sub $500

  • Using one of these right now, managed to get one during the two minutes that $499 eBay Plus deal was active a couple of weekends ago. Recommend.

    • what kind of games do you play? and comments re: fps games?

      • I’ve only played Subnautica and Among Us so far, but no complaints. I have a Dell UltraSharp (IPS) next to it though and it’s a lot brighter by comparison.

        • ah ok, im strongly considering buying it while im waiting for RDNA2 to launch.i play a mix of all games, just dont know what to do lol

          • +2

@dadgamer: It’s cheap, it’s decent and it’s wide. Get it man, ultrawidemasterrace

            • @Meconium: nah going to hold off, when surfing some forums i read theres a v2 coming out….. so will save the pennies, then can add the money ive saved and the money from selling my 1080ti to the mix lol

  • This Xiaomi Monitor is not compatible with my iMac. After I updated macOS recently, the DP1or DP2 connection is no signals at all, totally a black screen!

  • How's the warranty with Gearbite?

  • +5

Good price for a decent monitor as long as expectations are realistic. So don't expect it to be a high end monitor.

I owned one and returned it and eventually purchased a LG 27GL850 and a Dell S2721DGF.

I calibrate all my screens with display cal and a to 110-120 nit brightness with an x-rite i1Display studio (aka Colormunki Display)

    Pros:
    -Ultrawide goodness
    -Pretty good build quality
    -Dark black levels
-minimal branding and a good clean look to design
    -magnetic covers

Cons (at least on the one I received):
-Very very poor panel uniformity, especially noticeable on grey to white backgrounds.
-terrible backlight bleeding at the bottom centre of the screen which even at 100nits caused blacks to look grey in the area.
-Dark level smearing at high refresh rates.
    -Very poor viewing angles.

    • Agree. Noticed this as well on mine.

  • What is this like for photo editing? Causal lightroom not professional, I'm currently using an IPS LG 29WK500

  • Is this AU stock or grey import version?

  • Just about to pull the trigger on this and realised there's no more cashback D;

  • +1

Mine just got delivered, so fast!

  • I just received the monitor today.
Quite happy with it so far.
Anyone get their shopback tracked yet?

    • Only $59.67 is tracked, nothing about extra $5 bonus. Anyone is having the same issue?

      • Your lucky - I didn't get the $59.67 tracked..
Here's hoping next week is better.

      • +1

Same… $59.53 tracked and no mention of extra $5 bonus.
Got mine delivered today. Coming from an ancient 21" FHD, this is quite overwhelming. Loving it so far.

        • +1

Mine only tracked $59.10, strange that it's all different amounts.

The $5 bonus won't track until Nov.

The cashback bonus is in addition to the usual cashback you receive on eBay Australia purchases.
The cashback bonus will be credited separately into your ShopBack account by 30th November 2020.
