interested in the grinder. can you link the $159 one please.

    • +3

Maybe a year ago you could. Covid times you cant

    • +1

I'm genuinely interested in where you'd find these prices without a time machine

    • +1

Why the dramatic increase in price over the year?

      • +3

Closed coffee shops -> More coffee consumed at home -> Higher demand

      • +2

The same reason people want to by video game consoles and home gyms. Covid.

    • Be surprised if you can get the 920 by itself now as being superceded. Id say last BingDeal was it at $999. Links to where you can get it at $800 and in stock

      • Superceded by what exactly?

        • The dynamic duo. Comes a set with the grinder now. Used to be able to purchase on its own

          • +1

@ScooterY: People have been saying this for years, but still it's sold separately.

    • Shame that this combo used to be $999.

  • +11

how times have changed since 2019 BES920 $679 + Breville Smart Grinder Pro $159.20

    • +1

These were the prices i picked mine up late last year, great i got in when i did.

      • +3

yeah this price is just ridiculous, have to be desperate to be buying at these prices

        • Yeah I paid less than $800 for the pair.

          Why so much higher now?

    • +24

Good lord, haven't we already been through enough this year?

    • +6

I assume covid damaged your sense of taste?

      • I believe the sense of taste is completely lost, not just damaged..

      • brave of you to be assuming that the taste was there to begin with

  • I got this through Qantas points last month when they had a Breville sale. Probably terrible value but not using QFF points for anything anytime soon and desperately needed decent at home coffee.

Have loved it. Such a good machine with exactly the functionality and outcome I was after. Saved a heap already in not needing to get out everyday.

  • Can you get just the machine by itself? Or what is the machine that has replaced it?

  • +2

Tough times. This was from Dec '17.

.. And I paid with discounted (10%) ebay gift cards

      • +1

        Same
Discounted eBay cards plus promo sale
This is over double the price it was, but this machine rarely gets discounted like it did, even before covid

For much less I got a Gaggia New classic pro and a Macap M2D grinder which in my opinion are heaps better…

    • I agree.

At this price there are much better machines and value to be had.

    • Where did you get this machine and what price?

      • Appliances online, $627 delivered, the Macap M2D was during an eBay promo from Sirius Coffee, $474 including a smallbag of beans.
I am very happy with both.

        • AO has a 16 week wait now! Is the version they sell the 2020 pro or the 2019 pro?

          • @serpserpserp: I believe there is no 2020 version, the only difference SHOULD be the new colours.
Did you try to have an online chat with AO? Back then I tried and they said there was the possibility to have it delivered from another state.

It's horses for courses, and they are two very different horses.

You're comparing a tiny (130ml) single boiler, Non-PID, full manual machine to a PID-controlled, programmable shot, pre-infusing dual boiler (300ml brew and 950ml steam boiler) machine.

For pulling a single shot of Espresso, the Gaggia is likely going to be a better machine.
Making back to back Lattes or Caps, there's going to be a lot of temp surfing with the Gaggia and a fair bit of hit and miss with extraction temperatures.
Most home users are going to get far better, more repeatable results with the Dual Boiler.

I agree the grind quality out of the M2D is no doubt better than the Smart Grinder, so it should be at more than twice the price.

      • Once you get your workflow sorted with the Gaggia is not that complicated. And I had zero coffee making background before starting.
You are right though, it is not super easy.
Also I love the fact that Gaggia are made in Italy and very reparable and upgradable.

      • My understanding is the Gaggia can do two coffees back to back pretty well, (as in two pours than do the milk for both) but beyond that it will be temp surfing galore. So good for the non-entertaining home.

On the plus side, I predict they’ll be lots of cheap good secondhand machines for sale post COVID as ppl realise they aren’t as good or can’t be bothered making their own coffee?

    • With the price of coffee from cafes etc I doubt it.

      • It is not that easy to make a good coffee using this duo. I spent a couple of months to get there and thought about selling it a couple of times :)

  • +1

    it is officially brevjack now

  • Paid 850 for dynamic duo 4 years back. It has stopped working last weekend, continues to loose pressure on a 30 sec coffee shot. Is it worth fixing ?
Any recommendations on a new machine ?

    • Suspect its just the pump - $50, and an hour of time … or a couple of hundred at a recognised repair shop…

    • Depending what the issue is, and how hard it is for you to get to a service center to find out it may be an easy fix. Failed seals/tubing are an easy (relatively cheap) fix.

I assume you've been cleaning it through the 4 years? I'm pretty lazy with our Breville (different model) but they do clog up if you don't clean them (salt deposits from tap water going over the boiler and coffee oils from back pressure on the shot).

TBH if its more than ~$100 I'd be looking at a new machine, might throw a bit more at is if I can see and understand what went wrong, and confident there aren't other issues.

    • +2

DIY repair can be reasonable but depends on amount of internal water damage - preventive maintenance can save a lot.
Service Centre repair might be half of a new machine.

If you were happy with Breville - get Breville.
Otherwise you either get a basic single boiler machine for the same price as Breville or more advanced HX (not dual boiler but close enough) for $2k+.

      • I have been doing basic preventive maintenance (clean & descale). Noticed after last 2 descale cycles that the 'descale' sign does not go away. Any recommendation on advanced HX ?

        • Good.
In my opinion preventive maintenance includes opening machine and inspecting for leaks / replacing o-rings before water damages electronics.

          Recommendations?
I still recommend to do further research.
From the top of my head - Lelit, Profitec/ECM, Rocket (all usual suspects).

Most likely fixing Breville won't be that expensive.

    • +1

Def worth the fix, mine has been going strong for 10 years

    • Just fix the machine. It wont be expensive.

  • There os also the BES870 going for $636.65 at moment. Just bit the bullet on that after numerous repairs on the BES900 over the life of it.

    • Condition: Seller refurbished

      • Oops. My bad.
