8GB is probably the optimal amount for non gaming laptops. Open a few applications, documents and browser tabs (especially Chrome) and you’ll struggle with 4GB

These days even 8GB barely cuts if for kids if you consider they might keep it for 2-4 years.

8GB is the bare minimum. web browsing and windows 10 eat a lot of ram.

    hd resolution in 2020?

    Screen Resolution: 1366 x 768

It’s probably not too bad on a 11.6inch screen but FHD is definitely desirable

    • It’s quite hard to find FHD on 11” laptop

The CPU wasn't well received, when it was launched in 2016. It's just a slow, low wattage processor. Plus all the security patches that need to be applied, due to Intel security holes found over the years, on CPU'S prior to Ice-Lake will slow it down even more. Plenty of newer CPUs, with similar specs in this price range if you just look around.

    • not easy to find sub-$600 for 360 hinge 2in1 + probook business build quality + running win10pro (not some chromebook)

Probook is viewed as entry level business grade, similar to the Thinkpad E series. Having owned one, I wasn't very impressed.
This device should have been $599 when launched, considering you are getting the equivalent of a four year old i3 CPU, 720p screen and only 128gb SSD. Windows 10 will already consume approximately 40GB. If the kids are using it, not sure why they need Win 10 Pro, considering they can access Win 10 Education for free with similar features if needed.

        • can you find any other sub-$600 , 360 hinge 2in1 win10 ?

with better cpu and FHD + bigger SSD ?

          • @dcep: If you login to the Lenovo education portal, you can find newer specification laptop with a current gen CPU, FHD display, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD for $90 more. Considering that the OP is mentioning that you would buy this for your kids, why would you spend money on something that has four year old tech, with security holes in the CPU, when you could get a current gen product for not much more?

@dcep: I bought this laptop ~6 months ago for $549, but my daughter didn't like it (big bezels, bit slow etc). Returned it and got a refurb (HP refurbs are as new) HP Envy x360, Ryzen 5, FHD, 256GB, backlit keyboard etc for $760 through their education portal. This was during COVID, so I would say there would be even better deals now.

  • very budget build

  • If you play the Aliexpress game, the BMax Y11 is an impressive little machine for less (warranty and support are likely non existant)

    • Looks like a decent machine for the price, reviews point out horrible battery life through, less than 3 hours. I guess a portable USB-C battery pack could assist, but then prob better off just getting something 13" with the space for a larger internal battery.

Edit: so at max brightness and streaming video gets about 3 hours. 50% brightness and doing web browsing documents etc it is closer to 6 hours. There is also a 13 inch model.
I'd definitely be looking at this BMax Y11/Y13 over the HP. Both the 11" and 13" are currently less than $500 at Banggood.

  • RRP for Windows 10 Pro is $340, pay $260 more and you get a fully functional multi-use laptop computer.
