  • How well does this work? Not expecting the most quality product since kmart but for casual use?

I have the aldi one, i think it will be the same model as any other store online. It works well, easy to make, but a PAIN to clean. Depending on your recipe, churros might loose a lot of water (or maybe oil?) and that will get everywhere on your table. You are supposed to flip the churro maker in the middle of the process to get them to cook evenly, and at that moment, that oil goes everywhere under the maker, so i usually use it with a lot of kitchen towels under it. Also, you might want to get something like an icing set (https://www.kmart.com.au/product/icing-set/1173319) to make the churros before you get them into this maker. I do love this machine, churros are easy to make, but it's hard to do them in a clean tidy way.

I got one from Kmart last year and it was a total piece of shit. Followed the recipes included, everything came out poorly and unevenly cooked. Usually I would just wear the expense but I was so disappointed in it I ended up returning it.

OzRRP at it's best :D I thought Churros were fried?

    • +2

Supposed to be fried.. not baked.

    • +7

      another viral kmart advertorial

      • +5

True that. I honestly think that behind the scenes these 'articles' on news.com.au are generally paid advertorials that are written up to look like a news article. I rarely trust information on news.com.au anyway.

A bit like a dim sim can be fried or steamed, churros seem to be able to be fried or baked - there are recipes for both out there.

      • +2

Bake them if you like them dried out. I wouldn't recommend.

    • Fun fact: churros from Oliver Brown is using this kind of machine.
not sure about San Churros though

      • +2

San Churro deep fry their churros. That is what makes them so tasty ;-)

    • They are but baked churros from Oliver Brown > fried San churros

This appears to be a jaffle/toastie maker in a different shape… Which leads me to the obvious conclusion, "Should I attempt to put churro batter in my jaffle maker?"

    • Definitely

    • I make them in my pie maker + put a piece of chocolate in the middle

  • +13

Wonder how much Kmart paid to get these "news articles" published to generate buzz on this product.

  • +14

Another new fad-device that will be used a few times then go to landfill …. just like electric jaffle, waffle, donut, icecream, popcorn makers have in the (recent) past.

    • +2

Mostly agree but not sure jaffle iron deserves to be on that list

    • +1

Pump your brakes on the jaffle iron, I love mine

      • jaffle makers are a requirement on the latest Australian citizenship application!

    • +1

I dunno…I use my jaffle and popcorn machines all the time. I've seen some pretty pointless contraptions though…the hot dog maker springs to mind.

  • +4

I need to make a device with replaceable plates for jaffles/churros/waffles/etc and make myself rich.

Well, right up until kmart release a $20 version of it, undercutting the crap out of me.

I always try to avoid buying anything that just does one thing, unless it's coffee related, it always winds up in the back of the cupboard and gets pulled out once a year (except the jaffle maker). It's easy to make churros anyway, just buy a piping bag and bake them in the oven, will probably taste as good or better than this thing.

      • I have been wanting this or ages but they are pretty pricey..

Each set of plates is more expensive than this $20 standalone kmart ones.
Also some plates aren't available in AU.

        So tempting indeed though!

    • Damnit, now I want one. However, it is a tad pricey, especially to build up the plates. Might keep an eye out for specials.

Got given a similar one for Christmas last year, was also from Kmart in NZ but the one I received also can do donuts.

Haven't even used it yet, maybe I'll pull it out over the weekend….

  • +3

yeah don't expect crispy churros, this is more like a tube pancake maker

    • +2

A bit of baking powder does wonders.. I use it in my waffles to make them crispy. But they need to be had hot, they go soft when cold.

  • +5

I’m guessing 80% of these appliances will be used for about 2 weeks, then make itself to storage in the garage/shed, then make its way to rubbish collection in about 6 months.

    • +1

They won't be able to give them away at garage sales.

  • I haven't had churro since hiking in Spain. I'm thinking I would be disappointed by my homemade version with this after those in Spain being my only reference.

    • you ate them whilst hiking?

    • Camino de Santiago? :)

      • +2

We all sigh in memory of the times we visited Spain.

  • +1

Does anyone have a good churro recipe to share? The ones I've made from recipes online taste nothing like you'd get from San Churros and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong! Note: I usually fry them.

  • Stick to the frying. Sorry I can't help you with a recipe, but my extended family make them and they are always fried.

    • "Here's a neg vote but I wont actually provide you with a reason why"

  • +7

    Nice - an RRP product….

      OP got confused with OzBackInStock

much healthier, its baked not fried

    • -5

      Thankyou Captain Obvious.

      • -1

had to point it out in case Einsteins like you didnt realise it

        • -2

The fact that I said your comment was obvious begs to differ!

    • I load mine with butter so it has built in deep fry capabilities

      • -1

Apparently, we are all stupid and don't realise that this is not healthy.

Here's one on gumtree for $10 if you like it in red. Near parramatta.
    https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/parramatta/other-appliances/…
Pretty soon they will all be on gumtree.
Millions of them on fb marketplace too.

  • +2

"the news" lol no those stories are advertisements.

  • +1

    "in the news"
what a world we live in where paid advertorials are considered news

  • What is the saving here?

  • 'Sold out within days' lol what a joke. I bought this for $3 in their post-Christmas clearance.. it's just like a waffle maker but in churro shapes. Would not recommend unless you intend to eat churro shaped waffles instead. Used it once and never again.

Go to the effort of making churros properly, frying like a donut. This doesn't make anything close.
