Recommend Me a Good Matress

I'm into my 9th year with some Ikea matress that a friend gave me that they hardly used (it was for a guest room).

The matress is kind of drooping at the sides and it's not the most comfortable. Well still more comfortable than the standard beds @ my inlaws in China.. they love hard beds
over there but could be better.

Can anyone recommend me a good matress, thats pretty comfortable & doesn't break the bank too much. It's a bit hard to test matresses at the moment with restrictions in Vic. Feel like I need to upgrade my matress ASAP since getting sore shoulders lately etc. I currently have a queen bed.. wondering if it's worth upgrading to a king. might need to measure the room to see if it will feel cramped or not.

Might be good to upgrade the bed frame too, that was a ikea freebie too but years ago I broke it in the middle had to do a bunnings run to fix it with screws/timber etc.

Got Sleeping Duck here for the last 5 years or so, no problems, looks like new.

With these sorts of things what is your budget? $200? $1k? $3k? $5k?

I use Sleep Republic and i've had the mattress for about 4 years now and is great. Also check out Sleeping Duck, Ecosa, Koala etc. Their Queens are around $1200 or so. Most of these companies have 100-120 Day Sleep/Night Guarantee so if you are not satisfied then it can be returned.

    • Probably up to $1k mark a little under or over is okay.

Researching the forums, ebay brand zzz atelier mattress sparked my interest. Seems a bit too cheap though but has postive feedback. Wondering if its "can feel the savings better" :P

My parents do have a holiday with 2x queen beds that are far gone from the 80's. Could try the ebay one with an option of using it to replace my parents holiday house one if it doesn't work out. Not sure what their return policy is like.

Sleeping Duck has me interested on the sleeping to the edge reinforcement. I normally sleep on the edge when my 5 yo son decides to sneak in, in the middle of the night.

  • The Ikea mattress I had before was quite decen I bought one thinking I'd use it temporarily insterstate, but ended up sleeping on it for 7 years. I probably should've chucked it out after the first 5 years, but I was surprised it even lasted so long!.

I now have a Tempur mattress and it's the best thing I've ever slept on!

  • Currently using an Ikea mattress - either memory foam or latex I can't recall. They have a pretty long warranty as well. Another family member has a Koala mattress. Ikea mattress is firmer compared to the Koala which is quite soft. Both in a similar price range (<$1k)

Koala is now made in china.

    • Don’t agree on the Koala being quite soft, most reviews say the opposite (which matches my experience with mine).

      • Interesting - I have a strong preference for firm mattresses so I may be exaggerating its softness - according to Koala: "So the Koala Mattress sits at a 6.1/10 on a firmness scale so it’s not too soft, not too hard but just right for most people."

I guess that shows it's important to test a mattress out if possible. Thankfully Koala has an excellent returns policy and IKEA has plenty to try out in store.

"Zzz Atelier" is very popular here. I bought 2 of the super firm and love it.

    • +1 for the super firm. Back feels great!

    • Which model did you get?

  • Well not Oz Mattress anymore

  • I recommend OMF - https://omf.net.au/

Been sleeping on a king size for over 5 years now. Love it.

    • sounds like the noise you make when you get into it every night.

I empathise with restrictions in Victoria but any chance you can wait a bit?

I can't imagine purchasing a mattress without testing it out in store first. Just because jimbob from ozbargain said it was comfy??? You spend a third of your life sleeping, I'd make sure the choice was grounded in good research.

    • I feel like anything is better than my current matress. I might try flipping it tonight. I think alot of the recommended ones are normally online businesses with sleep guarantees. might be my sore shoulders talking :P

  • I got Ecosa and I love it… firmer than most, but while skeptical at first i'm sold on it.

  • We bought an Emma mattress. Delivered next day. Flat 3 days later. I'm happy with it.

    • Same and its far better than any I tried before. No more body aches.

  • try IKEA and enjoy 365 days to return it ….somehow….with an Airtasker?

Those return warranties are a trap. My daughter's KOALA was rejected by her after 7 days and KOALA wouldn't accept a return inside 100 or so days, so we bought one from <insert name here> and put her KOALA under the bed. And forgot about it. So, forgot about it and then the return was refused. Now it's a house spare and never used.

Doubt IKEA would play that sort of game.

    • .. after 7 days and KOALA wouldn't accept a return inside 100 or so days,

What reason did they give for not accepting the mattress back?
I've had a few friends return it and they seem to have been pretty good with taking it back.

Think they want you to try it for longer than a week. Can take awhile to adjust to a new mattress.

    • Current one is a freebie Ikea one. I think its a budget model. Dont think it has plush memory foam on top or anything. It doesn't compare to my old single bed Sealy but still the Ikea one is better than the extra hard firm beds in china.

  • We asked too soon; were told to come back AFTER 100 days.

My kid was over it after a week. Soft sided mattress, did her head in.

    Second request was too late.

    • Soft sided as in it declines on the side as if you feel like you could fall off if you sleep too close to the edge ?

  • Sleeping Duck hands down. Rated by Choice as the best overall mattress for the past two years. Highly recommended. Check out the Sleeping Duck website. They are based in Melbourne.

  • Do you have any back issues?

I do (use to be more serious) so a good mattress has always been important for me. Spring mattresses will dip sooner or later and I've always like latex ones more.

Makin Mattresses' latex options which will be well above $1k for a Queen sized option but I've found them to be cheaper than other latex options on the market. My first queen sized one lasted 13-14yrs and was only replaced because it started to look old. Current one I've only had for 1yr but no issues during that time. I have 2x single sized mattresses from them too that I've had since 2016 that have been great.

  • What about heat in mattresses? I have an IKEA mattress - one of the ones with a memory foam top. I find that because of that it is a very warm mattress.
How is something like the Sleeping Duck mattress as far as heat goes?

  • I recommend Sealy.

I have purchased this brand for the past 30 years

Recently had an issue with one of their mattresses. Didn't know when i bought it… Just an approximate year (based on life events πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ) and what retailer.

All Sealy orders are custom made in Australia.

They found my original purchase, sent me out to "try" mattresses in the current range. Made a new replacement mattress. And shipped to me.

The original purchase was 6 years ago.

Not only are they comfortable long wearing mattresses but their after sales service is second to none.

    πŸ’― would purchase again πŸ‘

  • The truth is that everyone is differnet.
    Some like firm, others soft
Some like pillow top others not.
So any recommendation here is totally USELESS TO OP!

So best thing to do is STOP BEING LAZY and go out and try out some matresses.
You can always ask to try out the ones in your budget range.

Now go forth and stop asking for what others like.

    • I would if Dan lets me one day :P

  • Certa mattress is rubbish, big divots in less than 3 months, get runaround blaming manufacturer, waiting for reply etc. etc. and then saying return it, which they dam well know one can't (2,000 kms away), its been over two months now, no result and we're very annoyed, so now off to consumer affairs and CC company it is.

New mattress is Ecosa, very happy with it so far, they offer excellent warranty inc. 100 days money back and they have charity collect for local use.
