    Im pretty sure my gaming laptop is this exact one i got it pre-covid on a ebay Dell Sale. It is pretty good for portable gaming but the battery life is abysmal.

    This does not come with a bracket for the extra SSD slot. I believe you have to contact Dell prior to ordering to include that in the package

    Buyers beware, this laptop is plagued with issues such as constant overheating, audio playback stuttering, BSOD's and freezing, terrible storage options from factory, extremely hot surface temperatures while in sleep mode, terrible battery life and easlily the worst problem i faced with this laptop was the RTX 2070's core clock throttling from 1800-1600mhz right down to an idle core clock of 300mhz making the game's frame rate drop from 100+ down to 10-20 making it it impossible to play any games

    The laptop doesn’t include the mounting hardware to properly mount an additional m.2 SSD and sourcing the parts from Dell is next to impossible, I've heard from other owners that they will only supply the part from the factory if you originally purchased the laptop with a extra drive

    I purchased this laptop two months ago from the last deal and it was a absolute nightmare of a machine, i ended up returning my unit
    (i know for a fact that my issues i experienced were not isolated)

    Save your money and buy something else

      This matches my experience with the laptop too. Unless you are willing to seriously cut down performance by locking the clock speed and voltage of the GPU, in addition to turning off turbo boost on the CPU, it can't even be labled as a "gaming laptop" unless you only game in 5-10 min sessions. If you play longer then this you get temps of 90 degrees and extreme thermal throttling leading to 10fps gameplay. I also experienced lots of BSOD issues, where either gaming or running a graphics benchmark would cause the laptop to crash after ~5 mins.

      In the end I returned the laptop for a full refund (which involved reminding Dell of Australian consumer law) and decided to just get a proper PC instead. From most of the reviews I've read it doesn't seem that "gaming laptops" are really viable at this price point as they all seem to be plagued with thermal issues, but as always YMMV.

        theres a comment on your first link that issues are possibly fixed on new bios firmware, did you return before that?

        i got the 1660 version yesterday with extension to 3 yr warranty for $2050 total

          Yes, i tried the latest bios v1.30, it only made a slight difference to the frequency and the extent of the throttling in my unit

          Yeah I actually held out on returning until the new firmware came out hoping that it would fix things but unfortunately it didn't.

      I have returned mine too. The fan runs extremely loud. I could not bear that noise level. CPU runs at 100c most of time when gaming which has been claimed normal by Dell, but who knows what happens after the 1-year warranty expired.
      This model would be on Dell's outlet website very soon.

        Mine was very straightforward (returned within 7 days), the Rep did some basic troubleshoot though. I think Dell might have enough cases of similar issues.

      Appreciate the feedback. Not worth a purchase from me.

      Based on videos and using the same hinge design as the G5 se it's likely to have the same screen yellowing issue due to the screen being warped/flexed as there is no metal frame and it's heavily taped in from halfway down.

      I could handle the G5 thermal issues after tweaking and updates but the yellowing on the bottom right and left hand side during black/grey/red other colours on screen was too much.

      Dell - great specs, poor quality control and design when it comes to g series, alienware etc.

      At least the return process is easy.

    I can't believe the times we live in, this should be a recalled product, it's half finished and seriously a fire hazard, plus just 1 lazy year of warranty for such an expensive device, should have 2 years no questions asked, to cover manufacturing faults if they occur.

    Would be interesting to see how widespread the issues are from actual numbers (which would be hard to get). Showing 615 sold on ebay so far. How many have been returned?

      The thermal paste used by Dell is crap. I recently repasted my Alienware m15 and now the GPU fan almost always off and CPU fan turns on and off rather than being constantly on during normal (Non-gaming) use.
      I’ve also undervolted the CPU and now I don’t get any thermal throttling even with CPU intensive tasks.
      The GPU (RTX2060) never had issues with thermal throttling even prior repasting. Probably the full RTX2070 wasn’t such a good idea in the G7 which is why prior versions had a the MaxQ variant

        On mine I found it was actually the CPU hitting its throttling point of 100c rather than the GPU, but for some reason the system would throttle BOTH the CPU and GPU when this happened, despite the GPU only being at 80c. I think half the issue is poor thermal design and half the issue is poor bios design. It's so close to being a great laptop, they would have had a winner if they could have just had a little better thermal management.

            @drazenm: It's so crazy. Like even if it added $200 to the price of the system, it would still be a great deal for this hardware if it had better cooling. I guess half of it is maximising profits and half of it is not wanting to creep into the territory of their Alienware range.

          Perhaps repasting + throttling the CPU might work if the GPU wasn’t the main issue. I was previously reaching 100 degrees in my Alienware though I didn’t get the massive drops in frame rate described by some above.

            @FireRunner: People have had some luck with undervolting, and I was able to reduce the issues by turning off turbo boost, so I'm sure a repast and some tweaking would work too. The only problem is that repasting voids your warranty, and reducing the performance of the CPU goes against the whole point of buying a high end system. You shouldn't have to take such drastic measures just to make a $2000 laptop usable.

              @PediatricLemon: I don’t think repasting voids warranty, at least with Alienware (and likely Dell since they’re under the same company). Undervolting doesn’t impact performance too much.
              I agree that the customer shouldn’t have to deal with these issue. Good thermal paste should have been applied during manufacturing and the CPU should be undervolted out of the box imo

                @FireRunner: I have an Asus GL702VS i7-6700HQ + GTX 1070 and an Acer GX-792 i7-7820HK + GTX 1080, both had thermal problems and throttling because of that, I solved this issue repasting with Liquid Metal, no more issues with temps after that.
                But it is clear that this should already come from the manufacturer, and not have to be fixed by the user.

    I'm one of the people who had to return the laptop, just unplayable. The tech support over this was mostly rubbish, friendly, but rubbish. The return process was smooth and easy, up to 30days and they send a courier to pick up from your location.

    I believe there is a reason why these $3500 laptops are being discounted to $2000 constantly. It's a beautiful but fatally flawed laptop. I'm only taking a guess, but the ones people have returned might be the ones on sale again as they don't consider it faulty as it passes their software tests and as I've been informed, is working as designed.

    I'd advise to be cautious in purchasing this laptop, but you can always buy and see if your unit is faulty or if you can live with it. If not return it easily.

      I have an Acer GX-792, i7-7820HK + GTX 1080, it's a good laptop, but I rather build a Desktop Gamer than buy other laptop, even it has a full GTX 1080, the performance is not close to a desktop, and after a long session gaming, the battery starts to drain and the performance become even worse, and laptop gamer has to stay all the time on the power point, and it's not very mobile because its hevy.

      I managed to get the Asus rog strix g15 G512LW-HN068T during the eBay flash sale for $1800. Good price for the 10750H and rtx 2070. But some reviews indicate that I should be a little concerned about the response time on the 144hz screen, specs says it's >20ms which would mean it has servere ghosting. Will have to wait and see when it get delivered hopefully this Friday.
