My big ugly gaming PC isn't even that powerful :(

    • I wonder if this has a better spacebar than the previouus gen g7 7790 which sometimes didnt register if pressed closer to either side

    • -1

PSA: This laptop has a 2070 max-Q inside. The ebay spec page (and some of the comments below) is straight wrong. Check out this page:
      https://videocardz.com/newz/dell-launches-new-g7-17-7700-and…

It pains me to see some feller OZBargainers misled by these shady naming schemes…

      • -1

Do you actually have one to be so confident in this "PSA" ?

Because every other piece of information I've read indicates that you are incorrect.

        1) This model is a 17" model and the link you posted clearly states that:

"The G7 is powered by the latest 10th Gen Intel Core CPUs (up to i9) and NVIDIA’s GeForce graphic cards (up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 with Max-Q Design on the 15″, or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super on the 17″)"

In many cases "Super" is used interchangeably to mean Non-Max-Q.

        2) The model number for this is gn77d603au which is listed as a non-Max Q on the Dell website in both Australia and U.S. Dell very clearly distinguishes between the two graphics cards, even letting you filter between them in the LHS filter settings.

        Example: https://www.dell.com/en-au/shop/gaming-and-games/sr/game-lap…

This link shows the 3 available models filtered by RTX 2070. The 17" model number matches the ebay one and isn't listed as "Max Q" whereas the other two 15" models are (which again reinforces point 1 that 15" tends to be max-q and 17" max-P)

        3) There was a user on here a couple of days back who had already received this model and was using it - along with a reviewer of the 17" model on the Dell Australia website, both stating that it is indeed Max-P.

    Where's my 4800H with a 2070 super Dell?

    • +2

      The real question

      • +5

At this point I honestly feel Intel have paid off all the manufacturers.

How can it be possible to get brand new 10750 and 10875s with brand new RTX2070/2080 supers but there is NOTHING AMD??

Why are so many AMD laptops being released with subpar elements??

They knew the newest Ryzens destroyed their lineup in every category. Bullshit it's got anything to do with mobos or heat issues.

    • +5

Team Red destroying team Blue.. the prophecy is fulfilled.

      • For this cycle.

    • +4

Going to hold out for the lenovo's coming out in September.

They look like they will be about 500gm lighter, with better cooling and ryzen 4800h.

    • +1

It only has 8 PCIe lanes.

  • +5

If only this was a 15inch, I'd jump on it. Great Specs!

    • +2

Is 2 inches really that much different?

      • +48

I think the answer is usually yes.

        • +1

          Ouch

        • +13

I'd be happy if I had one extra inch…

          • +1

            @thisisscotts: I don't think I have ever seen a 16 inch before. Any links?

            • +4

              @l005e: Macbooks come in 16”

            • +4

@l005e: I think you might have assumed I was talking about laptops.

            • +2

              @l005e: I got a 16" big mac

            • +1

@l005e: Metabox (Aussie Clevo reseller and often solid value) did offer 16inch but seems to have been phased out already sadly

        • -1

          That what she said.

      • +3

If my nighttime associates are to be believed, then it's like night and day.

      • +2

Screen is different too, the 15 inch model has better brightness and refresh rate. Having said that.. this is a brilliant price

        • +1

          I thought they're both 300 nit and 144hz?

      • That's not what she said.

      • It makes a massive difference!

        …trust me

    • A 17" these days is close to some 15" from 5 years or so ago.

I'm upgrading from a old school 15.6" acer and its not that much bigger dimensions wise

  • -1

Surely this nice machine deserves better than Win 10 Home.

    • +2

It’s a gaming machine, absolutely no need for anything than Home

    • +1

most people dont need anything more than home

  • Is the GPU Max Q?

    • +1

      200%

    • Don't know, it doesn't say Max Q, even on the official dell website, only the G5 version mention max Q, so not sure

    • +5

This is the full 2070 Mobile (Non Max Q)

      • -1

No it's not. It is Max-Q.

        • +5

I have the laptop mate, I know.

          • @kml22: There are 2 versions. These are the max-q ones.

            edit: technically 3

            • +4

@Feeblely: Not worth explaining to you anymore.

              • @kml22: Okay….. guess you know more than the rep selling them lol

                • @Feeblely: i had a dell rep on a chat window tell me its the Max-P, so i believe kml22.

          • +1

@kml22: hey mate, since you have the laptop. Can you confirm if G sync can be enabled?

      • -4

So it is max q after all. Why are you getting all the upvotes when you gave everyone the wrong answer

        • +1

          Because it's a full 2070 max P

      • Sorry to bother you kml22.. You mind telling us which SSD is inside this model, preferably with the model number? Thanks

        • +1

          Samsung PM991 NVMe 512GB

          • +1

@kml22: Thank you! least it's pretty good SSD.. not a SATA M2.. hehe

          • @kml22: :( I ended up getting some weird brand - Kioxia 512GB.. which according to passmark is total crap:
            https://www.harddrivebenchmark.net/hdd.php?hdd=KBG40ZNS512G%…

            Very annoyed..

            • +1

@bchliu: I just ran Passmark on mine (also KIOXIA) and got a score of 15510 - which isn't terrible.
2125 read, 1124 write which is on par with most budget friendly nvmes - such as the Kingston A2000 that a few others purchased for their 2nd drive.
In all honesty, I expected a lot worse…
I also just checked the stats on the Samsung PM991 and the KIOXIA is considerably faster… So yeah, it's a step up :)

      • kml22

Can you get access to the m.2 drive without tampering with a warranty sticker?

        • Yes, changing or adding M.2 does not avoid warranty.

    • +1

The same laptop on the dell U.S. site says it's Max Q

      • +1

there is also a 2070 super version on dell US website..

        • I asked the rep in the original Dell deal chain - he confirmed its the max q.

      • +5

Spoke with Dell online chat it's not the Max Q version

    • +2

      2070 Max-P. confirmed from dell.

    • +1

      haha so many conflicting answers.
can we get a definitive one?
I just bought one and now I'm very curious.

      • I am calling technical support now. Will update.

Edit: omg the call dropped / they hung up in me

    • +1

Max Q - confirmed by Dell technical department

      • +2

The only non Max q seems to be 2060 and below. So 2070 and above are Max q variants.
        I wonder which performs better a 2060 or 2070 max q.
Apparently 2070 max q performs marginally better than a 2060

    • The eBay listing says Max P…

  • How reliable are these Dell's & how good is their warranty service ?

    • +3

Not reliable but good aftersales support so get as much warranty as you can

      • +2

agreed had a dell, keeps overheating, will try replacing thermal paste if it makes it much better

        • +2

Same as mine after a year
Replacing thermal paste, fan, heat sink without success
Turn out it was the motherboard, so try that if yours is still overheating after repasting
          All covered by the warranty

          • +2

@ln28909: its 10 years old so probably not worth it,

how much is the motherboard btw if replace yourself.

            • +3

@[Deactivated]: If it’s a laptop they usually charge like a wounded bull. Warranty really pays off.
If it’s a desktop they sometimes have unique case lay-outs that make it difficult to swap in a mainstream replacement or even prohibit it. Meaning you’d have to swap the case and mobo, then maybe the psu as well.

            • +2

@[Deactivated]: The technician replace my motherboard in about 15 minutes so I don't think it is that hard, keeping in mind that my laptop is made in 2018

            • +2

@[Deactivated]: Good luck getting a mobo to replace it yourself. Not really an option in most laptops.

              • @Zondor: yeah that's what I thought.

might try the thermal paste. How much is needed on a cpu spread evenly around the whole heat element or just a blob on the centre

        • +3

I have a 9750H in a Dell G5, brand new hits 100c, undervolted 125mv and now it runs 75c max.

          • @walktexranga: so its kind of like buying a Mac

        • Try undervolting it, adjusting fan profiling, and checking if airflow is blocked by retarded mesh design.

Laptops skimp hard on the thermal design, and the manufacturer assumes the CPU GPU package will be totally fine at stock voltage.

          • @Synticulous: I totally understand that I have experienced before.

IMHO, laptop should only be i5 with large assss battery or with weak gpu for some gaming/photoshop.
But gaming should only be desktop, what's the point of buying such an expensive device if you can't use it to its full potential or only for a short period before the whole thing turns into a stove.

    • Thanks Guy's for all your replies I don't think it would be wise from what I read to get my partner one of these.

  • Is this the newly released one this year?

    • yes its the new model

  • +10

do your research people, if its a low enough wattage 2070 its not much better then the max wattage 1660ti (excluding DXR of course). Nvidia mobile GPU's can be very deceiving.

    • plus 1 to that…

    • +3

Agreed. I have a non max Q 1070 laptop and its performance is 60-70% of a desktop 1070. It is the last gaming laptop I buy - mini ITX builds from now on for portability.

    • +1

It's not much better, but it is better, has RT/DLSS, and it's pretty cheap for a 2070. Usually at this price you get a 2060 at most.

      • Yeah I even seen some Asus laptops with a 1660ti at the 3500 dollar mark.

    • thanks for the rude awakening. so 1660ti is a better value if we catch a good price?

      • +1

Not really. As it will lose support sooner and Direct X version lower

  • Anyone know which colour gamut the spec is referring to?

    • +1

Would have to be NTSC surely

    • +1

      Confirmed from Dell 72% NTSC
