  • Is the laptop screen 4k display? Can you use it for 4k monitor?

    • laptop screen as per specs is full HD only.

[edit] I'm guessing u could run 4k if you connected a external monitor to it

      • Can you confirm if I can run 4k if I connect it to an external monitor?

        • Yes you can.

  • These are back in stock with more than 10 available for anyone who's still interested.

  • Delivery 7th September :(

    • The longer you wait the more pleasure you get when it finally comes.

    • oh damn..
I've got Wed, 12 Aug - Thu, 20 Aug on my email at the time of purchase?

i guess they are different batches? ( i bought laptop number 39)

      • Mine is also the same date, I think we will get it within the advertised time hopefully.

      • how do u figure out which numbered laptop?

is it just from how many sold before u clicked buy now?

        i think I'm 216

        • I think the delivery date was 12 - 20 August for the first 100 orders, then they added more stocks later and changed the delivery timeframe to end of August to September

  • Does the warranty start from your order or delivery date?

    • +1

      The latter

      • My guess is despatch date as that is when the invoice is issued.

  • +1

    Don't know why I did, but bought this. I have a desktop with GTX-1080 and a XPS 15 ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • Has anyone found if there's a way to undervolt this?

  • +17

When these finally arrive I reckon it'd be great to start a thread on the forum for the g7 17. We can share tips and tricks, thermals, battery life and general discussion around this model. Seeing how many comments and units sold I think many uses would enjoy and benefit from this.

    Anyone in?

    • Im in for sure. Also any good accessories or upgrades like RAM, SSD etc. Would be good.

    • +1

+1 , Thermals seems to be a common problem with this level of hardware. MSI GS66 I7-10750H can be undervolted, so i'm hoping someone would find a way to do the same for G7.

      • +1

I'm in too, it's so annoying having to scour Reddit for this information haha
So far I can't find any info on undervolting it yet. Probably because so few people have got this model so far.

    • +1

    • Sounds good to me!
Most interesting info I found is this review in youtube of the US model with 2070 non maxq:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjeNEDPAV9E&t=48s

And thermals aren't the worst, but not that fun to hear the fans blasting like crazy haha

      • Check the comments on that video, one user reporting serious thermal issues… I'm now considering cancelling my order.

        user Ethan Carey's review:

"this laptop behaves really weirdly. It seems to thermal throttle the GPU and randomly drop to 300mghz once it goes beyond the low 70s. This is even with turbo on the CPU disabled and temps under 80 degrees at all times. I've tried everything. Updating bios. Limiting max processor state to 99%. Undervolting. Preferring max power/2070 GPU in nvidia (turning off game mode, nvidia battery saver etc….) Basically, turned off anything that could screw with the overall temp of the device or limit power to the gpu. Tried every combination of fans in Alienware control center and Dell Power Management. There doesn't seem to be a fix. GPU drivers were up-to-date out of the box.

Embarrassing that this can't run Destiny 2 public events much better than my undervolted, turbo disabled 2019 XPS 15! Seriously, at least I know this device that I'm typing on has all the bugs ironed out so it's just the chassis thermal limits, and they're workable with a 60 fps cap. The experience is more consistent, and therefore BETTER on a GPU that is half the power, with a power brick 1/3 the size. The G7 fluctuates wildly, pinging from some of the highest 1080p FPSs I've seen in a laptop to some of the loweest. It seems to be completely at odds with itself. Super high frequency limits with low thermal limits (on the GPU) and weak fans. Run a game like Tomb Raider (OG reboot which is WORLDS away from Rise/Shadow) and overlook a scene for 10 minutes and the CPU will run up to, and stay at, 100C. Crazy. Other gaming laptops keep these scenes in the 80s, tops, because this is 2013 game!. The infamous 'Geothermal Valley' in Rise would probably crank this CPU to 100 in 90 seconds or less lol. I really thought completely disabling turbo, a huge compromise to begin with, would solve the thermal issues. But amazingly, it doesn't!

Doesn't make a good gaming laptop out of the box OR with tweaking. You couldn't even settle for a 'rung down' performance to preserve longer-term playability even if you wanted to. And this is the flagship!!! WTH? Even for $1,360 in MINT condition, I can't justify keeping this laptop. And it kills me because everything else is ACE. Build, looks, keyboard, lighting, screen, etc…it's ALL good. But man, did they butcher the thermals. I thought Yimmy was exaggerating. The only part of mine that was SUBSTANTIALLY better than his seemed to be the battery. With light lowered to 30 percent or so, I could easily get 3-4 hours of moderate use which isn't bad considering the refresh rate."

        • That is a bummer. I can live with 90 degrees and use it as a heater, but not with frame drops to 10????!!

          SpaceGangPyro's comment:
"I just returned mine to BestBuy, spent 10+hrstrying to get it to play 3 different games on lowest settings and would not stop dropping frames to 10fps after 5 minutes of use. GeekSquad said they couldn’t help and to just return it. Debating on trying another or going with a m17 r3"

Also, it may be an isolated case?
kml22 reported 97 degrees… and he is pretty happy with the performance.

          • +1

@catchthemall: So far 3 (yimmy, Ethan Carey, SpaceGangPyro) vs 1 (kml22).

            I'm gonna cancel my order.

It's (on paper) a great deal, but not gonna risk the thermal performance.

The Infinity W5 has received great reviews with similar specs and no thermal issues, but it's out of my price range right now.

As much as it pains me (I love shiny new tech, especially at bargain prices), I'm going to wait until next year eBay sales when hopefully there's a good Dell AMD / 3070 max-p combo with decent thermals on offer…

            • @Sarazar: Yeah, completely understand your pain. I was pretty happy to get this one, but it seems the only option is to repaste since day 1 and don't want to void the warranty. Hard call.

        • I'd say th GPU dropping to 300MHz means its running off the battery, and is also what causes the drastic frame drops. I wonder if there is an issue with the power delivery and the laptop has to suddenly switch to battery then back to AC.

Another consideration for this laptop is these 10th Gen CPUs aren't able to be undervolted, (except for some MSI ones), so thermals are gonna be hard to improve.

          • @alphalpha: It might be that he got a faulty one? Considering that he bought an open box unit, it may well be a return from someone else.

            • @catchthemall: Possibly. The thermals out of the box and (likely) lack of undervolting are my concerns on this - specs and price look pretty killer, especially as it seems to be a 2070 max-p

              • @alphalpha: I bet that repasting will do a great job, but that would be after a year.
Also, I think setting the CPU to drain less power in the Windows energy profile would be an alternative to undervolting:

                https://askthemanager.com/2018/01/stop-new-dell-laptop-overh…

                • @catchthemall: One of the guys that commented on the YouTube video above (Ethan Carey) mentioned that he was able to undervolt.
                  So there's hope!

                  • @Dipaty: maybe run it with the back cover off, and ontop of a cooling pad? -until we can rethermal paste?

I did this for my old dell xps m1210, m1340 and studio 1640 back in the day.

                    • +3

@Gifwonder: Another thing to note is that many of the commenters of that video have the i9 variant of the 7700 (only available in the US as far as I'm aware) which is much more prone to thermal issues than the i7 variants.
I guess we'll all see how bad it may or may not be when we receive our deliveries.

                      • +1

@Dipaty: The link to Bestbuy shows an i7 though but with a 300Hz panel.

                        • @lomie: Yeah but one of the models from Dell directly is an i9

                          • @Dipaty: Ethan Carey commented that he has the i7. I couldn't find any other comments mentioning an i9.

                            • @lomie: I saw a few people that commented on this video as well as another video with the i9. I've been researching this shit quite a lot to see if anyone has managed to undervolt it yet.
Not saying that Ethan specifically has the i9, just that many of the people mentioning thermal issues have the i9.
Also check Reddit, most posts on there for the 7700 are the i9 variant. One thread in particular had a few people discussing the thermal difference between the i7 and i9 versions.

                              • +3

@Dipaty: Just an update on undervolting for anyone who cares about it:
Ethan from the above video has confirmed that he was able to undervolt straight out of the box using ThrottleStop and is really happy with the laptop after some tweaking with the CPU and GPU voltages. His machine is really stable now with -150mV on CPU and -850 on GPU.
Obviously with the silicon lottery, I'm sure everyone will see varying numbers with their laptops.

                                • @Dipaty: Thanks for the follow up :)

will give it a try before pulling out the artic silver paste :P

      • +6

I have been using mine for a while now and don't find any major underperformance. Yes it gets hot (85c GPU), yes it is loud, but it is an i7 and a 2070 in a thin laptop form factor. I have not run in to any low frame rate issues or drops in processing power. In fact, i've been playing Modern Warfare on almost max settings with frame rates hovering in the 140s with no issues over a number of hours.

        • Thats really good news. Getting excited for mine to arrive now :)

        • Thank you! That makes me feel good about the laptop!
And thermals aren't that bad, 85 degrees is quite good and I guess with repaste will drop another 5-10 degrees.

        • Thanks again for your input.

        • Does it get hot under the WASD keys? I had to return the previous model Dell G7 (15 inch) earlier this year because the metal chassis around the keyboard got so hot during gaming that just brushing it slightly while playing felt like I was burning my fingers. Not fun at all.

Didn't matter how much I tweaked the internal temps, that metal body conducted the heat way too well. Hope this version is better?

          • +1

@star chasm: Yes it gets hot but i didnt find it to be "burning" level hot

        • May I know what's the weight for this laptop? The official site isn't helpful. It gives a range of weight 2.8-3.2kg

  • +1

Anyone know if this model comes with fingerprint reader? Dell website says gn77d603au has Palmrest with Fingerprint Reader. eBay list doesn’t mention it?

  • Out of curiousity, has anyone has their laptop posted? I ordered at around 150 units sold and have an ETA of 21/08 so not expecting much just yet on my end!

    • +1

I am the first 10 order but they haven’t shipped it yet

      • +6

I haven't even received an official order confirmation from Dell yet. Only the PayPal payment confirmation and eBay confirmation so far.

Once we get the actually Dell order number, you can track it all here:
        https://dellpleportal.dbschenker.com.au/ETA/ETAquery?Length=…

Not sure why they don't tell people about this tracking link with every order but a customer service agent gave it to me with a past order when it was taking forever to arrive.

This portal will always have the most up to date tracking directly from the logistics company once it has been shipped from Malaysia - more accurate than Dell's site actually.

        • +1

Has anyone received a confirmation from Dell yet? I haven't heard anything from them and it's been over a week since placing the order..

          • @Dipaty: I am about to ask the same thing. For the people bought from Dell before or Dell Rep here, when does Dell normally send out confirmation? Thanks.

      • Yeah I was in the first 50 orders, and have heard nothing yet. I messaged the rep on ebay and said we should get the order number this week? its Friday now, so i don't have much hope.

        • +1

I've got an order number - I was in the first 10 buying it. ETA 7-9 August

          • +1

            @iratepirate: Whaaaaat. Jealous as. Haha

            • @j-scrizz: My mistake I read it again it says 7-9 September!

              • +1

@iratepirate: Holy fk balls, that's not what was advertised 😣
Have you tried tracking it on this link? It's more accurate than Dell's website because it's direct from the logistics company. Last time I ordered from Dell, it was updated daily - whereas the Dell site didn't update until the day before it arrived.

                https://dellpleportal.dbschenker.com.au/ETA/ETAquery?Length=…

                • @Dipaty: Yep that's the web address I checked my order number on. However the tracking location says "shipped" and "on route to local hub" so I expect it a lot sooner.

              • @iratepirate: jeez if you ordered first and only get it mid September, the rest of us are looking at early Christmas presents probs LOL

          • @iratepirate: ughhhhh Jeeze. alot later than what they originally promised me.

            • @j-scrizz: Yep Just got my order number… on the Dell website says by 19/8.

but the other option it gave me to track it is also saying 7th-9th of September.

Hope the first one is right.

  • Is there any good deal out there to upgrade the RAM to 32GB? The price from Dell is outrageous.

    • Isnt 16gb enough anymore?

      • +2

Haha! Depends on the cost. The more the better.

    • +1

Seems the 2933mhz memory is really rare/expensive, but you can get 3200mhz modules for around $120-135ea (so around $250 to upgrade to 32gb).

I'm contemplating it… although not sure i really need it. But as I'm buying it as a business laptop it reduces the price by 47% so if i could sell my 2x 8GB sticks for like $75 it becomes a $50 upgrade….

  • is it better than Envy x360-15-dr1048tx which was for around $1200, but missed out on that one? Coming from macbook pro 2013, need a windows laptop.

What will be the best laptop under $2000, good performance , 512 gb or 1tb ssd, 4k touch screen, not a gamer though.

  • May I know everyone's thoughts on the alienware at ebay from Dell Alienware-M17-R2-Gaming-Laptop-9th-Gen-i7-9750H-16GB-512GB-SSD-RTX2070

    My research:
    - a chance that thermals will be slightly better. With full RTX2070 max-p on the G7 compared to RTX2070-max-Q, will the G7 get hotter? I suppose my question is, does the more powerful graphics card make otherwise identical computers run hotter?
    - better build quality with alienware
    - around $360 more expensive with alienware
    - 9th gen vs 10th gen intel chip which is actually quite similar in performance

I know this question has been asked a few times before, but I am really having a hard time deciding. I have bought both at this stage and intend to cancel one of them…

    • -7

First let me get this out of the way: They are BOTH 2070 max-Qs. Check out the comments on the lower half of page 1 OR this page:
      https://videocardz.com/newz/dell-launches-new-g7-17-7700-and…

Those two guys kml22 and jt0505t sure caused a lot of confusion but THEY WERE WRONG, because no dell G5 / G7 models were designed to handle 115w gpus, period. G5 /G7 were already notoriously known as hot and loud even for that 80w maxqs inside.

Alienware R2 is running 90w, a slightly better version of maxq if I'm not mistaken. So out of the box performance is 3-5% better. Plus you can easily undervolt 9th gen with this Alienware, that's another 3-5% performance on top. And build quality is better, and looks / logo is shinier, etc…

So, I'd go for the Alienware.

      • +3

I think you need to read the thread and the listing. It's a 2070 max p. Read the 'about this item' in eBay listing it has been updated as a 2070 max p. So we ARE RIGHT.
And kml22 has the damn laptop with screen shots and proof.

And a review of it with a 2070 non max q

        https://youtu.be/CjeNEDPAV9E

      • +2

Anyway I'm not going to waste my time with idiot, even with proof that this is the 2070 Mobile (aka Max P).
For those who bought this laptop, and once you have it in your hands, please come back here and thanks me :).

        • +2

I've seen enough evidence and am happy to thank you now…
          Thanks! XD

  • What will be the experience watching movies onto this?

    • Not as good as with a 65" 4k hdr tv + nvidia shield + sound bar = $2k movie viewing. A tad heavier though.

    • you may want to get an external monitor if you want the best experience watching movie

      • Can this display 4k content on external display using hdmi?

  • Hard to decide between this and DELL XPS 15 4K OLED

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/556142#comment-9097160

  • Dear fellow OZB members, can you suggest if this laptop could be used for content creation purposes. I am not into Gaming that much. Am looking for a laptop with good specs that could be used for content creation under 2k, of course with good selection of ports and s/a RGB and higher nits. Any help/direction in this regard will be really helpful.

    • +1

If the screen is important then you may want to look at the one with the oled 4k 15" screen https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/556142#comment-9097160 it has better colour reproduction and is way brighter. The screen on this one is ok however the other one is spectacular. Otherwise, this laptop is more than enough for 2k content and can handle 4kif you decide you want more res in your creating.
