    • So it went straight into a microsoft account called begga? It should normally start with all the microsoft setup stuffs.

      • Yeah, with the first unit it went through the usual setup but for the second one it just logged into the "begga" user profile.

There were no additional programs or files on it so I'm guessing they just forgot to factory reset it? All good for now but will be keeping a close eye on it.

    • If there is an existing account, you'd better check the warranty info against the service tag if it started today.

      • +1

Checked the warranty and the one with the "begga" profile is at 364 days whereas the other one has 366 days.

Overall I'm pleased with the laptop, just waiting on Dell to respond with the missing mounting bracket and heat spreader for the 2nd SSD slot and I'm set.

    Mine got delivered this afternoon.
Box was slightly damaged but laptop is in good condition. I'll do some set up and test soon. ;)

  • So I now have a Startrack number and it says ETA is tomorrow. I hope it's right. ETA from Dell was 10th September only a couple of days ago.

    • It was right…turned up today. Now I just have to wait for the extra SSD to arrive from Amazon and I'm set.

      • whats the maximum capacity you can add to this laptop , and how much will it cost? How hard/easy to add the additional ssd, do one need to remove old or or both can work same time?

Just a heads up, I had to start the return process on the laptop. there appears to be some sort of issue with the laptop that the Dell diagnostic tools will not identify and as such Dell do not identify it as a problem.

Like some others, i have noticed that while play games, the FPS will sit at about 150-180 FPS, but randomly, it will either dip down to 60ish, or in worse cases drop down to 15 FPS, sometimes for a few seconds and other times for a few minutes. During this time the GPU sits at 300mhz and both CPU and GPU temps were below 60c and utilisation showing that they are barely being used. I've had Dell remote in and update all my drivers, BIOS and Graphics Drivers updated twice to no avail.

I thought as per the Technical Support that it was a Graphics driver issue which they calm is the responsibility of NVIDIA and beyond their support. However in further testing in Cinebench r20, on occasions i have noticed that the CPU will sometimes run fine, with occasional thermal throttling down from 4ghz to 3ghz while maintaining 100% CPU utilisation getting 3000-3200 scores. Other times, the CPU clock speeds would drop down to 1.6ghz and the CPU utilisation would sit at 50-60% and achieve a score of 2300. In worst cases the CPU dropped down to 1ghz for the entire test (i forgot to check the utilisation) and achieve a score of 1500.

I have been told twice by different Technical support that the drop in FPS was a hardware limitation and it was all that the hardware was capable of even when i explained the utilisation was very low. Once i was told that while it was called a gaming laptop, it was only entry level and i shouldn't expect too much. 10750H rtx 2070 (115w)

Anyway, they said its not a defect unless their diagnostic tool identifies something so its running as designed and there wasn't anything they could do for me, even after i showed them a video evidence of the issue in Cinebench.

This is a pretty common issue. Have a look in forum thread that we have going - there's a fix posted.
To cut a long story short, you'll need to lock in your voltage using MSI Afterburner and uninstall windows update KB4566782.

      • will do

    • I'm having this exact same problem, I've had to resort to a fresh install of Windows 10 to try it all again fresh, i have noticed my battery life has been dramatically increased, prior to the fresh install it wouldn't even last 90 mins on 50% brightness and web browsing

I haven't played around with battery life as of yet. I've tried Dipaty's advice on locking the GPU's voltage and clock speeds, but it seems to make everything run hot. I will test the adjusting the curve this weekend.

The CPU clockspeed and utilisation in cinebench is still a puzzle for me as it doesn't seem to be the normal throttling.

        • Hmm my temperatures were great yet the same problem persisted, i undervolted my CPU by -90mv and i undervolted the GPU to the same voltage curve too, the max temp it got was 78c for the CPU and 75c for the GPU, yet the RTX 2070 would still downclock to 300mhz in less than five minutes of gaming making it unplayable

@clokeyyy: Yeah, I believe thats from the windows update I mentioned in the forum post. With that uninstalled, you should see it working fine without clocking down to 300mhz.
YJK, I've just replied to your private message, so just go throught it and let me know if you have any questions. We should (hopefully) be able to resolve your system issues :)

            • @Dipaty: I uninstalled the update and prevented it from being installed again, I'm yet to test gaming out again, i am pleased to report that I've managed to last five hours today unplugged today while web browsing and listening to music at the same time!

              • @clokeyyy: That's awesome to hear :)
Let me know if the issues come back when gaming and I'll try to help out if they do.

  • whats the maximum capacity ssd you can add to this laptop , and how much will it cost? How hard/easy to add the additional ssd, do one need to remove old or or both can work same time?

    • You can have two SSD's installed at the same time straight out of the box, you have to move the metal heat sink that's on top of the original solid state drive and use it to secure your extra solid state drive in place, but by doing this you will end up overheating your main solid state drive, i was forced to remove mine and use my 1TB solid state drive as my only drive as it kept causing blue screens of death

      • So nobody is running two SSD's successfully with this?

        • I bought two laptops and moved the stock 512GB KIOXIA SSD from one laptop to the other - mounting bracket and thermal heat shield. This setup is for a family member that will be using it mainly for CAD/BIM and so far hasn’t had any issues.

On my laptop, I’ve got the A2000 1TB SSD and will be adding another later down the track. I’ll also be adding a thermal pad just as a precaution but in the meantime I’m trying to source an alternative standoff to secure the 2nd SSD properly.

          • @dynamite459: which thermal pad are you buying? i want to buy one for my 2nd ssd but i'm worried the thermal pad might not fit inside the laptop, also where are you sourcing the alternative standoff for the 2nd ssd?

            • @mrbondx3: SilverStone TP01-M2 Thermal Pad for M.2 SSDs SST-TP01-M2. Was going to get something off Amazon but it would have taken too long to arrive and Mwave is just down the road.

As for the standoff, I'm trying to find a similar screw that I had in my spare parts bin. Photos and details of the screw is in this comment which should help you try to find something similar. Will let you all know if I do find something available on eBay.

      • Sounds very complicated for someone who never did this before.

Can everyone please make further posts over at the forum thread?

That way all this goldmine of information is in one place and easy for all G7 users to access.

  • Anyone still waiting for price to drop to 2k to make the purchase :), then please do let me know as I've decided to let this bad boy go for 2k. Had purchased about a month ago from Dell eBay and haven't registered my name for warranty so you can still register your name
