  • SMR?

  • Nope, both of mine are CMR Ironwolf pros.

    • I thought it's a bit of a lottery with the 10TB drives? I got Exos X16 in mine, but many others got Barracuda Pros.

      • I got a Barracuda Pro from a Backup Plus Desktop 10TB enclosure. The same drive you get in Expansion Desktop 10TB enclosures at times. I guess it depends on whichever left over stock which Seagate has at hand in which you get.

        • Here's a link to when I posted a similar deal for the same 10TB Expansion drive a few months back: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/551231

The discussion showed most people got Barracuda Pros ST10000DM0004, and a couple of people got Exos X16 ST10000NM001G. Didn't see anyone else get Ironwolfs though (but I vaguely recall reading it on Reddit when I was researching).

So basically yes I agree, it's a bit of a gamble… so as long as you're happy with any of the drives, then I think it's a great value buy. Given the reviews of even the Barracuda Pro 10TB, I'd recommend this shucking opportunity easily.

          • @jace88: Yeah. Obviously some got a drive from a different batch where Seagate switched to Exos x16 drives probably because there was an excess. It's luck of the draw which batch you get.

  • This or 14tb? Or wait for 18tb?

    • Always wait if you can.

      • +4

Agreed. I would've said HDD prices tend to go down over time but in all honesty they have sortof plateaued in recent years with the volatility probably coming more from general supply/logistical shortages and FX.

    • wait until at least black friday, you should be looking at about 25 dollars per TB.

  • I didn't mind the gamble. I already had 3 Exos (retail, not from shucking) and they are noisy AF, so I actually wanted quieter drives.

I got 2x Barracudas from UK Amazon (MFR was 03/2020 so before even opening I had a good idea, as they started shoving better drives in for the July batch)

Run great, super happy with them in my NAS. Might sell my other 3 and replace them with barracudas given the low amount of load these go through and the fact that nothing I have on here isn't backed up/not vital.

  • Very good price. I paid a bit extra a few months back to get one from Amazon AU and it had the Baracuda Pro drive inside. Very happy with the drive (just using it as storage+games in my desktop).

  • I bought 2 of these from Amazon UK for around $284 (ordered 17/09/2020). They were Barracuda Pros. These replaced 2TB Barracudas I commissioned 8 years ago.

  • Price dropped to $265 on this
