  • I wish I could install coding apps on these things.

    • It looks like it's possible to install Linux apps on these. Would that suit?

Linux on these things is in beta, so it kinda works. And Linux has plenty of "coding apps" or I suspect you mean "development environments"? I assume simple editors like emacs are working fine.

And obviously support will get better in time. Updates guaranteed until July 2028.

        simple editors like emacs

        bwaha!

      • Yep 4GB will be a big issue as well.

    • You can absolutely code on a chromebook, but I'd recommend one with more memory and faster processor than this particular model. This is a tablet with a keyboard case.

    • Keep an eye out for Github Codespaces.

  • does playstore install on these?

    • From the screenshots it's already on there and the product description says:
'Log in with your Google account and get instant access to your favourite apps on the Google Play store'

    • Yes. I find the big advantage of Chromebooks are that many apps (e.g. Microsoft Office, Google Workpace) that can be restricted by administrators to require 'Work' account that just work in the browser and don't require you to install the app.

    • comes with play store by default

  • I got one last week. Play store is installed by default. Most apps I've tried install (though not all work fullscreen or resizable windows), some don't install. Chrome store also has some versions which don't install via Play store (e.g. Zoom)

    • hows it cope with only 4gig ram? notice any slow down browsing etc?

      • +2

It's got a pretty agressive swap file compressing and pre-loading thing going on. I've not run out of RAM yet. Most intensive thing I've done is, in portrait mode, have 1080p x265 video playing in top third of screen and chrome with ~10 tabs in bottom 2 thirds. Still about 3.5G RAM use and a few hundred MB swap in use.

There are occasional slowdowns mostly due to slower emmc storage while swapping, but it's not predictable. It's not super snappy all the time. And tablet mode feels a bit like it's still in beta. But apps which are properly optimized feel as snappy as anything I've used.

        • The only critical app for my daughter is Roblox.
Could you please check if it gets installed and runs from Play Store?

Somehow, it's more stable in desktop mode than when it's in tablet mode

    • Chrome OS.

  • +1

A few features, like tablet mode, feel like they're still in development. Linux is definitely still in development. And other apps need more optimization. But still quite usable and a very long time support until 2018..

      *2028

      • …And now I suddenly feel like an old man playing with a kids toy.

    Also same price at GoodGuys.

    • Thanks. Added to deal.

  • Available for the same price of $424 at eBay(The Good Guys) + $8 Postage (Free for eBay Plus Members) here

Offers me a $30 Sendandsave discount with code: TSS100GW5NZTYFQM.

Should bring the price down to $394 (with eBay Plus), or $402 (without eBay Plus).

    • That code might be targeted. I got this message when I tried to apply it: "Looks like that's the wrong code. Please double-check and try again."

      • +1

It seems this is indeed targetted. However, it showed the same code to me, initially as a guest, then again once I logged in.

Can't hurt to see if you have the same or a similar code available.

In any case, the missus just bought this at JB Hifi, 10 mins ago. Too easy to just pick it up now, and she had a gift card to spend anyway.

        • This code just worked for me on this Lenovo Duet from the good guys to get an extra $30 off

and you can even pay with credit card or paypal PAY4A

  • Really good deal IMO. I'm pretty happy with my Chromebook Duet. Sure the lack of display output resolution is annoying but other than that, it's a great little package.

  • +4

Use code PAY4A on EBay to reduce it down to $394

    Amazon too.

Can confirm it's one hell of a Chromebook as long as expectations are set correctly. Keyboard is smaller (duh), pen input is laggy (it's Chrome OS), tablet UI is janky (it's Chrome OS), and the low RAM means you need to calm down on those Chrome tabs.

The fact that kickstand AND keyboard are free is insane.

    • I've been holding off getting a USI stylus since I'm hoping more companies get on board the USI bandwagon. But I was thinking the stylus would be a big plus plus for this device.. Annotating pdf's for lectures particularly.

Do you have the Lenovo USI stylus? From my experimentation Squid has the best optimization/lowest lag. Have you tried many apps?
