                • @1st-Amendment:

Compared to the medical experts who said 2 million dead it's a success.

                  Lol who said that?

Please explain how you think this situation happened other than wilfully by the parents?

Because of poor record keeping. Parents were separated from their children and sent to different places. DHHS took the children and ICE took the parents. Because this was a last minute hair brained Trump scheme, neither department was prepared and they didn't even take records of which child belonged to which parent. I suggest you do some reading.

Oh see you avoided the question. Standard stuff…

I didn't avoid it. Donating your salary as charity is a farce. He owes roughly $100m in tax, that's what he should pay.

            • @1st-Amendment: he hasn't divested his business interests - he's sending government employees to stay at his business's - there's not a valid fact in your piece.

        • +4

And lets not forget brokered a Middle East peace deal - all of this is an enormous achievement

          • @usernameinvalid: Yeah, let’s see how long that lasts.

            • +2

@try2bhelpful: Bringing the Arab states and Israel together is a HUGE accomplishment and more than Obama ever managed. After decades of fighting it would be a miracle if it lasted, but lets hope it does.

Your comment strikes me as sour grapes

              • @usernameinvalid: What I really want to know is what Trump has offered these countries to “make peace” with Israel and how long can this “deal” last?

Not “sour grapes”, a lasting peace in the Middle East would be great. A peace based on an improvement in human rights would be even better.

This smells of a lot of other Trump deals. All show and press conferences, then it amounts to nothing long term. Excuse my skepticism but we’ve been here a few times before.

                • @try2bhelpful:

This smells of a lot of other Trump deals.

So your evidence is based purely on "smells like"? Figures…

it amounts to nothing long term

You mean apart from billions of dollars in wealth and a successful run at becoming President of the US. As far as 'amounts to' that is about as successful as anyone could ever hope for. But sure, black is white in TDS land…

              • +1

@usernameinvalid: Netanyahu is a crook and sold out Israel years ago….nothing he signs is worth anything…

These Trump brokered deals worked so well, don’t they.

No idea why you still try to defend someone who has publicly mocked disabled people & war veterans but you do you mate.

          • -1

            @CriticalImpact:

            He's the single worst president…

We're yet to see a case for this.
Only someone who knows nothing about previous US presidents would say something so ridiculous. I get that he tells lies just like every other politician in history, and I get that his manner triggers a lot of emotionally driven people, but policy-wise he has achieved a fair amount in only 4 years.

But sure only you can speak for the people of the future. They will all think exactly like you. The arrogance of such a claim is laughable and telling into any objectivity you might claim to have had…

When I was your age physical books was called books.

    • +1

Hell yeah. I, still, prefer to read physical books.

    • It is nice to use a physical bookmark with books though. Instead of the kindle bookmark button.

      • I often use things like labels off clothing because they are something on my bedside table. You can get some interesting “make do” bookmarks people have used in second hand books. I’ve got one, at the moment, that seems to have something to do with an Indonesian visa.

        • Using a winning lottery ticket as a bookmark, that’s a powerful move.

          • +2

@AustriaBargain: Yeah, but it might only have won a few bucks.

It's fascinating that Australians have more interest in American politics than our own.

    • +12

      Train wrecks ARE more interesting

      • This is true.

      • Who doesn't love a good horror flick

    • +9

As someone really addicted the US political news, it's because there's something constantly happening, it's way more dramatic, and at the centre you have Trump, who does not seem able to take any position without insulting someone.

Basically it's just like following a ridiculous soap opera, with the only difference being it's real life in the USA.

In practice I don't think those who support Trump in Australia would really support his policies if they were proposed at the next domestic election. I mean, if one of our parties said "for the next election we're gonna get rid of Medicare, Superannuation, the minimum wage and HECS and also illegalise abortion", I don't think people would go "actually we have been socialist for too long and going the way of Venezuela". Its more likely people would not vote for them.

      • +4

Probably because we have compulsory voting. You don't need to spend your energy getting your supporters to the polls, and often they do this by painting the opposition as lunatics who will destroy everything. It's a system that lends itself to extremes and, from what I can see, hatred.

In Australia, you win by appealing to the center as just about everyone votes. If you go too extreme you lose the center and you lose the election.

        • +3

Yeah that's a fair point, but I don't think it explains why our "center" is painted as their "socialist".

          • @AlanHB: Buckley v. Valeo is the answer you are looking for.

      • its not a soap opera - its real - its cost million of lives already and millions more to come….

I guess you're not glued to Dan's conferences every day? :)

    • +1

It's because our fate relies on theirs.

    • Because US politics has more influence over Australia than Australian Politics. Liberal or Labor makes little difference. Republican or Democrat could decide when we go to war.

      • absolutely correct - when we go to war for america is just a detail, when we go up in blue flash the yanks don't care..

    • My mum pays more attention to the US election than our own State's election, to be fair it's kind of like watching reality TV with all the drama over there

Fire and fury? Lol. The first president to not attack a country in 39 years.

    • +2

It's a reference to the Trump tweet against North Korea.

      • Obama told Trump that NK was the greatest threat to the US. Trump has neutralised that threat, but apparently this is somehow Orange Man bad?

        • Neutralised the threat? Hmmm, I don’t think so. I think the world just found other things to worry about.

          • @try2bhelpful: Good thing "You don't think so" isn't actually an objective metric.
Prior to Trump NK was actually firing real actual missiles over Japan. You know, an actual act of war. Since Trump met with him they have done nothing since. I'm sure you'll find a way in your head to make out that Trump is bad somehow, this is known in human psychology as cognitive dissonance.

          • +1

@try2bhelpful: They got more and better nukes than they had 4 years ago? They got those new ones with multiple warheads. Definitely feel safer…

        • +1

I guess it depends on your definition of "neutralised".

          https://edition.cnn.com/2020/10/10/asia/north-korea-military…

          • +1

            @AlanHB: CNN lol…
Just wondering, do you count a parade as a military threats? If a parade is as bad as it's gets, then things can't be so bad

            • +2

@1st-Amendment: I actually thought the development of the missile was the most interesting part of that story. They just don't seem that "neutralised" to me.

Edit: Here is a news source that may be more to your liking https://www.foxnews.com/world/north-korea-unveils-new-weapon…

              • @AlanHB:

Here is a news source that may be more to your liking

Your automatic reaction is 'thinks different to me, must like Fox News'. Sorry to burst your bubble champ, Fox News is just as bad as CNN. Pro tip, they are all lying to you. Stop watching/reading their lies.

                • +1

@1st-Amendment: Well actually I thought that you might like to see that the news organisations on the opposite side of the spectrum are reporting the same facts - it is agreed that North Korea are continuing to make weapons.

Do you have a preferred news source?

                  • @AlanHB: Nope, and they aren't reporting facts, they are reporting information that most of the time comes from the same places and can't be trusted. Always take it with a grain of salt. The fact that we know is that NK put a missile looking thing on display in a parade. That is the end of the facts. Everything else is pure speculation and should be taken as such.

Once you ignore the media and try to judge performance on objective facts, it becomes a little clearer. Are we closer or further from war? The current solution seems like it's improving to me. Is the economy strong? Pre-pandemic it was the best it's ever been, another tick. Is unemployment low? Pre-pandemic it was the lowest since WW2.
So most of the major metrics have Trump doing an objectively decent job during his term. The only possible topic up for debate is the handling of the Pandemic, and I think that is too soon to tell. The media try and paint as bad a picture as possible because controversy sells. But the true cost will only be known years down the track.

So in summary, Trump is not the Hitler he was made out to be. Never invaded any countries, never enacted a single policy that discriminates, and in fact is making America more free, not less so. All his judicial picks have strengthened the separation of powers not reduced them. Another win for the people. He's certainly less racist than Joe Biden who actually voted for segregation, but I don't believe is racist either. These are all just lies being fed to people to keep them engaged. The media is the real enemy here, not Trump or Biden.

                    • @1st-Amendment: So just to confirm, we agree that North Korea is at the very least, acting like they are creating weapons?

                      • @AlanHB: Sure, just like every other sovereign nation…

                        • @1st-Amendment: Cool, then we can agree that Trump's actions in North Korea were of nil effect, as they obviously don't care if they appear to be creating weapons in breach of their agreement or not.

I'm not faulting Trump for this, as no leader has been successful in curbing North Korea's activities. But to say he has been successful when he has not is a bit of a stretch.

                          • -1

@AlanHB: Well that was a fantastic leap of logic….
Trump's actions were to prevent NK from continued aggressive acts of war. Obama attempted to make progress on this for years and failed. When Obama left office he said NK was the highest threat to the US indicating he had failed.
Since Trump's meetings these have stopped and NK are no longer considered a threat. This is objectively measurable as an improvement.
You started out well, but eventually the TDS kicked in…

    • Yup. You do have to admire that the deaths, and misery, are mainly confined to American shores.

    • +1

he attacked the US, caused more deaths than decades of wars

      • They make a big thing about 911 and Pear Harbour. On average Trump is taking out more Americans, weekly, than both of those combined. Must be the buildings and the ships they are pissed about because they don’t seem to mind the human cost. Then when you look at their attitude to gun laws, health care, etc I, suppose, I shouldn’t be surprised.

They make a big thing about their military but they put in a Draft dodging President who denigrated POWs.

I’ve traveled quite a bit in America, and met some wonderful people, but they can have some weird ideas.

        • On average Trump is taking out more Americans

Is Trump also "taking out" Europeans? He must be really good at whatever it he is doing…

  • +1

I've read this book it's not bad.

This is an experienced journalist with an impeccable reputation who was in the White House watching things go down. He interviewed people to get these quotes and has them on tape.

Trump and team were and are completely out of their depth, it's chaos.
