[PC] Half-Life Black Mesa $14.47 (50% off) at Steam

1140

Got an email from Steam alerting me about this game being 50% off because it's on my wishlist.

For those who are not aware, it's a remake of the original Half-Life game by a third party, Crowbar Collective and has received very positive feedbacks.

Gonna finally relive my Half-Life experience in better graphics and new levels.

Thanks! Been waiting for this to go on sale

Wasn't this free when it first came out?

    • +5

Yes but they've updated it a lot more since the free version came out. Graphics improvements, Xen, multiplayer and workshop support, etc.

      • +1

So is it worth getting if i played the free version or not?

Im more after the single player mode.

        • +5

If you've played the free version, maybe not unless you wanted to go through xen but in saying that they've added so much since the original free version that I think it's worth getting.

@nomoneynoproblems: Also pays to support the creators if you enjoyed the free version. They've put a lot of work into this.

Absolutely IMO, Xen is fantastic. Aside general polish they made some small changes to level design to make it a bit clearer - with the addition of Xen they wanted to ensure people would make it through to Xen without getting lost and frustrated as often as could happen with the original design so they made some small changes to make it less tedious. I think they did a great job doing that without taking anything away, mostly just added signage/textures that improve clarity and enhance the immersion or understanding of the physical task you have to accomplish. They also rebalanced weapons (much nicer, eg. MP5 is actually accurate) but I'm not sure how different it is to the original mod from memory.

It's amazing. I rarely play single-player games, and I played through this entire game (10-15hrs) 3 times haha.

You can really see the passion that went into this project, and the price isn't asking for much either.

Definitely worth it, especially if you enjoyed HL1/HL2/HLA

i know everyone's confused about this since it was an "old game" but this came our of early access just this year.
originally it was a mod for Half-life (free) but since then they have departured to a full remake.
even with remade levels of Xen, Its overall a really decent work, some people said the Xen levels were draggy, but i thnk the developers were testing their skills at game design.

      • it was definitely draggy. The original Xen was maybe half an hour. This is about 3 hours. It was repetitive and far outstayed its welcome.

        • The original Xen was as so due timing n budget constrains.
Pretty much current xen is reimagining from not much material.

It is true it is slightly draggy, the consideration of having an environment we havent seen before but reflecting half-life lore from a design perspective is impressive (although it did take almost forever)

I also think if they made the current Xen 1hr, alot of people wouldn't notice/appreviate the amount of work they actually added to the scenery/textures.

But that's right as u said , they do need work out the hook to keep players much more engaged in those sections (especially platforming/puzzles) (even though they r making it from scratch).

The last level is their work portfolio now in their own ways.

Excellent game. From someone who was too young to play the original Half-Life but played Half-Life 2, this is well worth going back and playing through. It sucked me in just as much as the second game did - excellent job by the team who created this project!

HL was how I got into PC gaming back in the day. I was amazed by the story, gameplay, AI, etc., after coming from N64. I don't game on PC anymore, though I'm tempted to buy this. It'll probably run on my laptop. Wish it were on Xbox.

Im sure you probably missed all those backyard lan cafes, where the routers were nailed to the walls and each pc had some different shitty chair

gaming was so much cooler back in the day

@[Deactivated]: 10baseT days via coax!!!! Took me 2 days to transfer 20gb lol. My pc was king with 40gb space!

(profanity), LAN parties were dope as hell!!! I miss those glory days! Dragging around CRT monitors too lol

@HelpMeiCantSee: Hubs and all that crap, lots of cat 5 cables and duct tape

Yep never heard of it before. Must be some sort of homebrew indie game like Space Invaders, Pac Man, Defender, Donkey Kong and Doom.

I don't want to say you are full of it but Half-Life got ridiculously high review scores and had sold about a million copies before the first version of Counter-Strike had released, and CS wasn't popular until after Beta 5 Dec 1999. Half-Life was apparently the 5th best selling game of 1999, ahead of C&C 2, Flight Simulator, and Baldur's Gate, but I suppose no one cared about those games either.

        • I was there, you weren't

          • @[Deactivated]: You were where, alive? Fine, so was I. Your perspective doesn't match reality, you literally don't know what you are talking about.

            -Edit-
I purchased Half-Life back in the day, then Blue Shift, and finally Opposing Forces. I'm not claiming it was the most desired game of 1998, it was still well-liked even back then though, its sales figures and reviews show it.

Great game but a lot the new content they added is repetitive and gets a little boring.

Trivia for you: The footsteps in Xen are the sound of the sound designer slapping his wife's wet ass.

I'm going to purchase this just based on this alone.

Nintendo should take notes on this stuff.

Re-releasing emulated versions of their classic catalog with a couple of lua scripts to patch them for their modern consoles isn't enough for ya?

      • +1

Well, it'd be nice if some of the fan made games actually got completed and released.

        • +2

Valve encourages fan-made content, while Nintendo crushes any speckle of a community project using their IP into the ground with cease and desists.

I really appreciate this momentous effort to create this.
I missed the boat in playing this when I was younger and have since been able to gain some gamer cred playing this much prettier version!

Here is a video with some side-by-side comparisons between the two:

  • Great game, played it when it was first released free as a mod, then purchased the remake and played it again to experience Zen.

The last boss fight is intense!

Got it from New Zealand and it was NZ$11.99. So perhaps if you have VPN, try buying from NZ.

  • I remember thinking how good the original HL looked with my TNT2 card 😅

  • This is a really great game. Exactly what a remake should be

  • i completed it a few months ago. The Xen level is way too long.

  • I haven't got the game, but an article just popped up in my news feed.

The developers have just released the beta for The Definitive Edition. Apparently if you buy it on Steam, then hit drop down to choose beta, it adds some new stuff. Details in this article. Hope it's helpful
