Full Screen Ads, Is This a Joke? (Optus iPhone 12 Pro "Say Hello to 5G")

This ad is so broken, blocks content and is just horrible. I understand you need to make a buck, but id rather pay per month than deal with this…

    Turn ads off, problem solved.

    • Unauthenticated users dont have an option, and many people keep them on to support the site.

  • Merged from Optus Ad “bombing”

Anybody surfing OzBargain and had an Optus ad take up the whole screen?

I took a screenshot this time, this was like the 5th time (maybe more), so thought I’ll post it, to see if others are experiencing it (it’s annoying 😝).

    The screenshot

I thought ad creators “should” keep an ad within the allotted size 🙄

This has occurred on Chrome (Windows) and on an iPad.

  • It looks like something is wrong with the ad? Styling issue or something?

    hey! that's my post! lol.

  • I have had this on Android and iOS. I thought it was a glitch. Massively invasive.

  • Sorry about that, it's certainly not by design. A couple of users reported it, see here and scotty is waiting for the provider to block that advertisement now that we have the URL.

  • It has been reported a few days ago, and we ended up blocking all the Optus ads on the Google Ad Exchange until Google can figure out which specific unit was causing the issue. Looks like it is still coming through? Maybe it's not coming from Google?

If anyone has encountered one, please send me

    • Which OS and browser are you using?
    • What's the link when you hover over the ads?
    • What's the link when you click through the ads?

    Thanks.

  • I just want to chime in that I've experienced it myself, maybe a couple of days ago? Just twice though. Once on the desktop and another an android mobile.

    • Any of you guys experiencing this, do you have ublock origin installed or anything?

  • Looks more like a coding error with dynamic ads.

Google support aren't even sure how their system works most of the time.

  • It is just ordinary people making this site, at the end of the day. The footer says there's only 2,000 users and 6,000 guests right now, probably wouldn't be hard to work out what kind of revenue the site has based on the type of ads, affiliate programs, and a sample of what kind of things are usually on the front page. I'm guessing 8,000 at 7pm on a Saturday isn't exactly enough to justify a full time developer. You'd need to pay for marketing to justify the developer, and then it becomes more of an enterprise than a side gig.

You are using the wrong browser if you get ads.

  • I just got it again looking at https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/577677 using MS Edge in Windows 10, unfortunately I didn't see the links when I hover over it but clicking on it took me to:
    https://www.optus.com.au/mobile/phones/apple/iphone-12?dclid…

It says down the bottom something like Scrolling down will minimise it, something like that, and I guess it does. Still very annoying though.

  • Upstream has tracked down to Amobee ads on Rubicon's platform and the rogue ads has now been blocked.

    • I can confirm the Optus Ad still shows up (2 Nov, at 11:06am ADST). This time I was in Windows/Chrome, hovering mouse over the ad doesn't show the link.

      Thanks.
