I recommend not buying a Drop-made keyboard. Search the discussions for "ghost" and "double tap". All these keyboards have an issue where after a few months you press a key and it registers multiple times. For example you press a and you get "aaa". I know this from personal experience.

It has been many years since this problem was identified and Drop has not even found the cause of the problem. Of course there is no fix when they don't even know what's wrong with it. Yet they continue to knowingly sell a faulty product.

Drops repeatedly tried to shift the blame to the Halo switches (which they also continue to sell) despite many users reporting this issue with other switches.

Some users claimed in the discussions that Drop modified their forum software to make any discussion of this problem less visible. I don't know if that's true.

Remember the good old days when they were just Massdrop and things weren't as expensive as they were. I don't even bother with Drop anymore.

They still have some really good headphones and amps at reasonable prices. HD6XX is still one of the best headphones you can get at that price point. But overall I agree that it's just not that exciting anymore. I used to look forward to seeing new drops. Now I check it every now and then but there's never anything that's super interesting.

        • The HD6XX is really good, only because Sennheiser still manufactures them – like their HD650. I'm in the same boat as you; now everything is just meh.

Edit: I'd admit I was looking forward to getting a Drop ALT but after reading about the issues, I can't be bothered anymore.

      • In the old days, it was more like molassdrop due to how slow they were.

Hmmm…good to note. I would have immediately suspected the switches, too, but since these ‘boards were designed from the ground up to be fully customisable I’m not surprised other types have been tested, too. Out of curiosity, what keyboard and switch type do you have?

    • Kinda like they aren't doing a good job of debouncing - but yeah, would not recommend.

    • Ive been using a program called Keyboard Chatter Fix as a bandaid solution on my Logitech g613 with my work laptop. It filters out the 'chattering' and has a threshold which can be adjusted. It also has a handy log so that you can see which keys chatter the most. My A, O, K keys are the worst and are not AOK.

I say 'bandaid' solution because 1) This g613 is trash. almost all the alpha keys have chatter and i'll end up turning it rather than trying for a fix. 2) for a lightweight tool, the CPU usage when typing gets to about 15% at 25-30wpm (im a slow typist). Hence why i use only on the work laptop.

Hope this helps some with the issue

        Logitech keyboards are trash IME.

        • +1

Yeah i gave them the benefit of the doubt. These switches are so shit. and on my mates <1y.o G9xx, the lugs on one of his key caps broke.

My drop alt has been going strong for over a year with no problems. Drop has also said on a number of occasions that they will soon be selling their PCBs seperately so hopefully this helps those having problems.

I've had an ALT for 2 years, and a CTRL for 1 year. Had a few ghost tap issues with the ALT, but replacing the affected switches fixed that. No such issues with the CTRL so far.

Very happy with the boards though. I'm sure there's better, but there always is!

    • +1

Didn't someone find it was related to how the PCB was printed??

I haven't used Drop in probably over a year once they changed their branding from Massdrop to Drop and basically stopped offering actual group-buys and started their own lines of stuff.

I think the vast majority of people that went there went for the group-buys and the small communities around the topics…not so Drop could re-badge products.

They also changed how they charge postage on things and for many Aus/NZ/SEA people the postage went from normal to insane.

      • Good to know. Was wondering why shipping is so much more now

Not worth it over Durgod brand keyboards. These prices are insane

    • been waiting to grab the durgod Hades 68 for a while now
Seems like the best option over other 65% for the price!

      • +3

Aliexpress is cheap for Durgod. Bangood AU warehouse stocks some Durgod for better price than Amazon too

        • Good tip will sus
keeping an eye on the price haven't found it cheaper than $200aud yet

Booo no barebone CTRL high profile

    • Actually I chucked a Ctrl high profile barebones in my cart and the code works. pretty tempted

      • I couldn't find it Mmm must have pebkac'd

I am tempted as I need to put my kiwis into something

  • I know for own customisation mech it could cost $400-500. But still not worth paying subpar keyboard from them.

To add some anecdata, I have Drop Alt (high profile) and I haven’t had any issues, either with the switches it came with (box whites) or any other switches I’ve used, so YMMV. I’ve also flashed mine with QMK, which is a bit more configurable but a bit less straightforward than the online layout customization service Drop offers.

As for the board, it’s solid and seems well made. It’s expensive for what it is (a pretty vanilla 65% hotswap with QMK but without Via support), but unlike pretty much every other hotswap 65% mechanical, it’s actually regularly in stock and you can actually buy one whenever you want.

I haven’t tried a Durgod but it’s definitely a lot better than an Anne Pro 2 or a Ducky (more configurable and more solidly built, with hotswap switches), but not quite in the league of a build-your-own or a group buy. For 20% off, it’s not a bad buy IMHO, but still not a bargain.

  • Hmmm, tempted to grab ENTR, desolder it and change it to Gateron Yellow (since Halo switches is harder to get)…

This has definitely expired. Needs to be updated
