Great price for an awesome watch.

  • +1

Bloody hell. Paid $500 for mine 4 or 5 months back. Good watch

    • Price protection time

    • +1

bought mine 2 days ago for $287, that's $14.895 per day loss

you at least used for extra lets say 150 days . your daily loss is $1.6186

      :)

And I have to agree with you. Its a great watch

      • +1

now 239 with 20% off shopback rebel - so thats $18 loss and it has not even been 2hours

        • +1

          :(

        • +4

imagine me going to rebel this morning thinking it was a bargain at $289 and I see it's $239 this arvo at the same store lmao

  • +1

    does it have garmin pay?

    • I think the 645 does

    • +3

245 doesn't. Forerunner 645, 745 and 945 do. Vivoactive also does if that's more your speed.

Check Garmin's list of participating banks and cards to see if yours is on there though. It would be frustrating to find out that it isn't, if Garmin Pay is a big feature for you. I guess that list will update in future but who knows when or if a non-participating bank/card would appear.

  • +3

How is it compared to the fossil gen 5?

  • Great watch.

  • Nice price. Am still tossing up Forerunner, VivoActive or Venu!

Am more a runner and swimmer, so don't need gazillion sports, but the appeal of the Venu is that it possibly looks like more of a watch that will suit everyday use - rather than switching from watch for work and then back to sports watch.

Will see what I feel like later today. Tempting. Only GarminPay is missing here, if it can get by for work use in the looks department.

    • Venu is OLED display though so it will chew more battery usage when on the "always on" mode…

Forerunners easily 7 days battery life whereas Vivoactive slightly less with 5 days only…

    • +1

VivoActive & Venu use touch screen rather than up/down buttons. Dedicated buttons are much easier to operate with sweaty fingers after a run or swim.

  • how do you get 7% off in AGL rewards? I only see 5%.

    • +1

7% off The Her Card, The Him Card, The Home Card, The Kid Card

  • Any chance of a better/newer model in this price range in the next 1-2 years?

    • +2

Unlikely - this was announced in April 2019. Garmin tends to take 2-3 years to update models, the previous 235 was released in 2015. This should get software updates for a while yet.

    • +1

The Vivoactive 4 is also $589 full price.

As soon as I see this at 50% off I’ll jump.

      Has Music and Garmin Pay.

      • i bought the Vivoactive 4s during prime day from US via AU amazon for $307.00. It went very quick thus. Still waiting for it to arrive.

        • +1

I got the Vivoactive 4 during prime day too, received the watch last week. Surprisingly, the additional band from aliexpress I bought got delivered before the watch

  • worth selling fitbit charge 4 (paid $167)
is the garmin too big to sleep in.

being able to pay using watch if going for a run without your phone would be handy, or just take a 10er..
the fitbit didn't work anyway need to add the card again (said insert or swipe card lol)

would be handy if could use for heart rate in conjuntion with Garmin Edge (530) for daily cals etc, doubt it would work

    • This doesn't have Garmin Pay.

      • Cheers, not sure if worth changing don't really need that or spotify, dont mind sleep metrics and cals/hr etc. The garmin doesn't worth with other garmin products either i heard, but is a great price for what it is usually and more of a proper watch. hmm

    • +1

Fitbit definitely has the edge in sleep tracking.

      • it counts cycling twice with my edge, would be nice if both went into garmin edge to export to other stuff like cronometer, not that i track it often

Guess just want the basics daily hr/cals and integration with strava etc.
bit hard to see fitbit in the sun too.

    • You can actually use the HR monitor on the 245 with the Edge. Just set it to transmit. I use a 235/Edge 830 combo when I bike

      • Thats a handy feature if you don't take the chest strap etc.
Does it still include in the workout summary for the edge or have to start an activity on both?

Fitbit charge 4 good for the price and can wear two watches (and sleeping) as it's pretty minimal. Bit hard to read in the sun, but the auto uploads to strava work well after recording an activity, just slow. caleries were out about 200cal over an hour ride but prob the 15min that it recognises it's a ride for auto mode

        • hmm wonder if it's worth swapping from charge 4, pros cons of both
Apparently would have to start the sleep function manually on the garmin.. and may be charging it more often

ps does the code come available, where do you sign up sorry?

  • +11

Currently $239 with Shopback 20% ($50 cap) at Rebel Sport as another option.

    • Post as a new deal?

  • +2

Garmin FR245 music is a great sports watch (I mainly use it for running).

From my own personal experience, the "Start/Stop" button got pushed in and stuck after only 2 months of use (a few others have had the same issue on some forums I've read) but given that I paid over $500 a couple months back, I would have expected better build quality. Also since this is the most important button on the watch (used to select different settings or start an activity) it was pretty annoying.

I did call Garmin and sent it back. I got a replacement within 2 weeks. Replacement has been fine since so possible I just had a faulty model?

Hopefully didn't dissuade people from buying since I think its a great watch (especially at how cheap it is now) but just wanted to add my 2 cents and experience.

    • What about the music? Does that work imo?

      From this guys review https://youtu.be/2obixHh10G4

He said it was very hard to get the music on there for to wifi issues

      • Getting music on the watch is pretty simple. You can either use the Garmin program to get music on (kinda like iTunes) or you can just drag and drop once you connect your watch.

  • Gosh. if only JB Hi-FI NZ does the same singles day sale!

    (Ozbargainer currently living in NZ)

    • -4

why in the world would you go to NZ?

      • +1

        Why wouldn't you?

        • -1

          because it's not Australia

          • @canberrascooter: It's arguably better in some ways but ok enjoy your blind patriotism champ

  • I'm a hardcore runner but contemplating why I should get this watch. Do you really need it for running? I've been monitoring my pace whilst holding onto my phone, using the Strava app which is pretty good. It has pace and GPS which I feel adequate right?

    • +6

Mate, the difference between running with a watch and running while holding onto your phone is night an day.

If you do any type of serious running, get a proper watch. You won't regret it.

    • +2

If you're a hardcore runner who has never run using a GPS watch, buy this and prepare for your life to change forever!

      • Really? That's encouraging. I may sound ridiculous running with phone but I've never had an issue with it as my case grips well. I love the Strava app. May be a good buy then.

    • Agree, ditch the phone!

    • I used to do this but it really annoyed me carrying the phone.

This syncs to strava later and the separate garmin app which has built in training programs etc.

Best bit is looking at your wrist for instant updates on your pace when you're.aiming for certain places or splits or whatever.

    • It syncs to your Strava account (and others) as soon as it gets connection to your phone so you won't lose any Strava features.

It helps a lot if you believe in heart rate training.

You can programme and schedule workouts with steps such as warm ups and intervals based on duration, pace and heart rate. Perfect for fartleks or track sessions. It has a virtual partner if you want to run or race to a set pace or goal time. This is perfect for race pacing.

I'm sure there's a lot of features I've forgotten about as it's just part of my everyday run.

    • Hardcore runner holding a phone sounds super inconvenient.

This watch is great, you should get one.

You can sync your Strava routes and get real time navigation along and listen to music

    • Out of interest, how hardcore are you?

Like others have said, try the watch, you'll never touch your phone again

      • I'm very keen on trying the watch. I've been using the phone and never had a problem with it so never thought about a watch. So my pace is 5.30min/km to 6.00min/km for about 10km. About 3 runs per week.

        • +1

I am also holding my phone while running too. Never have problem. Can check msg and email in between for easy runs.

          • +1

@Woody123: Exactly! And the people who say it's inconvenient to hold a phone for running, I can understand but I don't find it inconvenient at all!

        • +2

I think we have very different definition of hardcore but good on you, good effort.

          • @[Deactivated]: Yeah I don't think Rich Roll would run with a phone doing the Hawaiian Ironman etc.
At least get an arm strap, I'd probably find that as annoying as holding a phone but each to their own.

        • +1

I wouldn't worry if you're only running casually. If you start wanting to train for something or have specific goals in mind then a watch is a huge benefit. You won't be doing speedwork with a phone in your hand.

    • I run with both a watch (Garmin FR 645) and a phone (OnePlus 6T inside a waist bag). The watch provides all the tracking I need but I still need the phone for streaming music / podcast & be contactable while on the road. One benefit I found with watch is heart rate monitoring which is really useful for any HR based training. I do MAF runs throughout summer, and I can set a maximum HR on the watch so it alerts me when I am going too fast.

      • The watch doesn't have Spotify offline? You need a phone to sync in order to listen?

        • Watch will sync the playlist with the phone, i.e. download all the songs from the Spotify playlist onto the watch, so —

          • Yes, you still need the phone and Spotify Premium to sync the songs to the watch
          • No, you don't need the phone when you are listening to tracks stored on the watch.
  • how does this compare to the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2? bought that one a few months ago for $350 but tempted to make the switch

  • oh ffs. Paid $950 for pixel 5 2weeks ago and $289 for garmin 245 music this morning and now see jb beats both prices today :((((

    • Have you got a credit card with price protection? It's a must have, for me!

  • Anyone have a singles day promo code I could use?

    • Read the post, will only be emailed later. You can still signup to the newsletter to get a code later today.

      • +1

Ah okay thanks, thought I signed up too late.

  • Unidays code does not bring the price down for me. Can someone double check for me please?

  • What's the best value garmin for golf and music? So confusing with all the different models

    • Vivoactive 4 I reckon. Has a wide range of stuff just misses the more in depth running/triathlon stuff that you get with some of the higher series. Does both music and golf. Wait for a sale and it should be in the 350ish range (or better)

  • Scored. Thanks OP!

  • +5

I just bought Garmin Fenix 6 pro for $519.20 down from $1149.00( Bupa member). Garmin fenix 6 watches are same price as JB HI-FI prices. Pretty sweet deal

    • Sorry, where was this? via BUPA?

      • Login to you Bupa account click on Bupa Plus members and look for Garmin 20% off and follow the link. There is no code for this you just have to buy through the page it opens for you. Good luck

    • WHY AREN'T THERE MORE +1'S NEXT TO YOUR NAME?!?!?……..

  • Thanks OP. Just got one. Been using the Fenix 3 no HR that I can't find for the last few weeks. This looks to be much better.

  • Looking at getting my first smart/fitness watch & have been looking at this one for its music functionality. Is it as simple at connecting the phone to PC & dragging over the music/podcast in order to use?

With Spotify is it correct that you need Spotify Premium to use it?

Just looking at ways to listen to music without carrying my phone with me

    • It is only linked to certain music platforms such as Spotify so you can't really drag music over (someone correct me if I am wrong).

Once you link your spotify premium, you can simply download the playlists over wifi into the watch and it automatically syncs.

      • don't want another subscription but may have to hit up the vpn and see what's on offer for spotify
Youtube music is pretty disappointing since they discontinuing Google play music, and Tidal is fine but not really necessary for on the go, the UI and listening history bit hit and miss.

    • Is it as simple at connecting the phone to PC & dragging over the music/podcast in order to use?

Yes it is. On the Garmin website it says you need to use Garmin Express software on your PC. However on my FR645 Music, after connecting to PC via USB, 2 drive volumes will appear — one for the activities and one for the media (e.g. MP3s).

You can also use music providers such as Spotify where the watch would download an entire playlist — however that's optional.

  • +2

Thanks OP, just picked one up this morning.

One of the staff told me, after my telling him that I found out about this on OzBargain, that they wouldn't accept the coupon unless I could show it was from a newsletter sent to my own email. Thought I would play the game and sign up to the email. Decided to do click and collect as well as that, and before he could finish telling the staff near him what he had told me, I was at the counter collecting the watch I had just paid for.

I didn't want to make things difficult for him first thing in the morning, thats why I didn't push the point. Just sharing with you all in case the same thing happens to you.

    • Thanks for sharing this. I don't have a local JBHIFI but do have gift cards that can only be used in store. Was contemplating making the 1.5 hr trip to get this garmin just so I could use the gift cards. Although I am signed up to their newsletter I didn't get the email. Might just have to order online and save my gift cards for another time. Or perhaps wait for a black friday sale? Hmm…

      • +1

Sounds like the better plan mate. Would hate to drive all that way and not get the deal. FYI, the store I went to was Booragoon, WA.

    • +2

Yeah! I didn't get an email so decided to do a click and collect instead of trying to explain people in store.

  • Sorry for asking noob questions, but how does this compare to say Apple Watch S3? I'm only a causal runner (5k every 2 days). Wondering if I should get this or a more generic smart watch like Apple's. My requirements are that it needs to hold music, and not too big (I have a small wrist)

    • Garmin FR245 is a running watch with some very limited smart features.
Apple Watch is a smart watch with some fitness features.

For 5k every 2 days, and you don't mind charging the watch every single day — then Apple Watch would probably be a better choice. Do note that you need an iPhone to use the Apple Watch.

      • Thanks, that's what I'm thinking too. Now I just need Apple Watch to go on sale…

  • Extra 5% off with Suncorp/AAMI rewards. Got it for $249 delivered.
