why get a referb when you can get it direct? new for 10 bux more?

    http://www.amazon.com/Kindle-Wi-Fi-Ink-Display-international…

    • +2

because it's not the same model?

      • -4

sorry my bad… didnt know there was a keyboard/non keyboard one…
40 bux cheaper for a referb… thats less than 1/3 off off…? for a referb

I have revoked as i didnt know there where different versions…

however: if you can get the touch - newer version for 40 bux more, I think thats a better buy - specially as batteries wear over time.

        • You can't buy the touch model in Australia… yet.

        • Man thats sucky its listed on the amazon page, you can even add it to your cart, then after you select your address it tells you… man they really need to fix there page after you select australia it should say!

        • just ordered one as per below (Touch) will let you know how i go.

        • "You can't buy the touch model in Australia… yet"

          Big W, $139…

        • @Skystar "Big W, $139…"

          Thats not the touch

    • +2

This one has double the storage (4gb vs 2gb of your link) - has the keyboard for note adding & searching, can also play mp3 & audio books (on both speakers & via headphones)and seems to have less glossy a display than the newer version .

I love my version of this kindle and at that price for a re-furbished as new one … lets just say I am poorer now :) The only bugger with them is everytime I loan mine out for a trial with a friend or family member I end up getting a new one as they won't give it back!

      • Thanks for the quick comparison paragraph!
very well praised with your 2nd sentence… maybe it is just that good :)
u sure you don't work for Amazon? (haha, just kidding)

        • +1

I wish :) Just really happy with what it does! This is the model where I feel the Kindle came of age… huge storage, 2month battery life with wifi off, fast enough refresh time and great control layout! So much so you forget very quickly you are reading from a device.

I jumped on it @ $190AU shipped ages ago and it has been cheap compared with buying all the books I have read thus far… let alone the ease of emailing someone a new read … Copy right free of course :P

My first one stayed with my Dad (it goes everywhere with him) … then the next one stayed with a friend! Both were happy they arrived full of books they like I think :)It also gives you rapid choice of books for your mood.

          … just saying ;P

@ Wisc … I can't say I use the keyboard too much - though it is faster to login to new wifi networks with long passwords! Also used it a fair bit initially setting up the collection folders etc and searching for books I was after. One thing to consider with the touch though … I know how filthy the screen on my 'My Tab' gets in a short while - and that could be rather distracting trying to read through it! Just an observation … haven't found anyone with a touch yet to compare :P

        • womble.orinoco any model in perticular i should be looking at? standard much different? do you know much about the touch? do you use the keyboard much? is it worth the extra $$$

          edit:
after scrolling down and comparing the touch has simular features to the keyboard, it does have a virtual keyboard, and it has the advantage of the touch screen, at only 139, think ill just go the touch brand new… only 40 bux more than a referb older modle!

        • I actually considered about buying a touch and 3G…
but got so many touch tech now-a-days I just want to use the good ol' keypad again!

But still tossing up between just the WiFi or 3G version!
Don't think DS or BW sells the 3G refurbish version!

        • @wisc The new 'Touch' model does not ship to Australia. Specifically, there are 2 keyboard-less Kindles right now, the Kindle Touch and the plain old Kindle that used a weird D-pad for navigation (no touch)

          Kindle 2011
          http://www.theverge.com/2011/11/11/2458956/kindle-2011-revie…

          Kindle Touch
          http://www.theverge.com/2011/11/14/2559732/kindle-touch-revi…

Second one does not ship directly from Amazon (as far as I'm aware), and the navigation on the Kindle 2011 is awful. It's comparable to using a D-pad to hit individual letters on a videogame controller. It's much more trimmed down in terms of specs too.

Kindle Keyboard is very reliable. It looks ugly, but it's an eReader, not your car. It's very usable and in my usage, you can't beat physical page turn buttons on the thing. Plus the nice bonus of the keyboard is that it has a little 'lip' that raises it when you rest if on your lap for reading.

        • Thanks guys ended up ordering the touch, getting it though shipito. should be here before xmas for my daughters 13th b'day soon after.

also while i was there grabbed a "Le Pan TC 970" shipped direct.
          9.7" tab
          GPS
          cap screen
          228 landed price.

seems decent from the revies i've read, specially for the price.

could have got it 10 bux or so less if the aussie dollar was doing better, whats the bet it jumps back up now!

    • Shipping to Australia doesn't seem to be free. I went to the last page of checkout and the cheapest shipping was ~ $12.

      • If you're referring to the Amazon Super Saver Shipping, that's only within the US, isn't it?

Edit: As I thought, its an extra $US12 to ship to Aust.

  • So tempted to buy one but I am broke now. Anyone have some ideas how reliable refurbished one is?

  • Damn. Bought it on Graysonline 3 weeks ago and I was charged for the delivery of 10 bucks.

    • +1

have you got 10 bux use out of it from the last 3 weeks? ;)

  • A good value for money since free shipping. But as trams asked, how reliable are the refurbished units?

  • 12mth warranty like a new one. So prob has new guts, but scratched casing.

    • +1

I would have thought, the casing costing next to nothing when bulk produced would be the first thing they replaced when there where any issues. would make it look brand new.

    • I think you will find that they are practically in new condition.

Refurbished is a broad term but if someone buys a product and returns it as not suitable the unit cannot (by law) be resold as new. It is checked as being working and complete (including any manual, power supply, leads etc.) and then sold as refurbished. Depending on what the prior owner did (just opened it, fiddled with it for a day or two or gave it a workout for a week) there may be slight cosmetic damage. In the extreme instance refurbed can mean that there was basically something wrong with the model, it was sent back to the factory to correct and then sold as refurbed. This is highly unlikely with Amazon (or with most things electronic these days… it's just too darn expensive).

  • Got mine from Graysonline last week and I can't tell it from a new model (including the sealed packaging).

  • +1

A number of people have also posted on Whirl that got the Grays Refurbs and have reported that they were pristine, practically new so pretty good deal if you want a Kinlde

However I do Note that if this CBA/DSE Hotdeal goes ahead then new Kindle 4's may be availalbe for $99
    http://www.facebook.com/commonwealthbank?v=app_1453639422286…

    • nice find, whats the kindle 4?

      • Kindle 4 is the cheaper version of Kindle 3, aimed at mass market who just want a cheap e-book reader.
        http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2011/10/kindle-4-review-its-just-n…

According to reviews, it's not that great! The specs are lower than Kindle 3 which is this version. The next up probably is Kindle Fire!

        • The specs are lower than Kindle 3 which is this version. The next up probably is Kindle Fire

I partially agree it does have some lowere specs but I dislike the Kindle 3 due to it's keyboard which I think is but-ugly which Is why I like the K4 better however the preferable device is the Kindle touch. The Kindle Fire does not enter the equation as it is not Eink and therefore not an ereader.

        • Apologies if I am ignorant of the facts. But I thought Kindle 3 has two variations Keyboard & Touch?
Both are based upon the same technology and built. So when I said that the spec is lower than Kindle 3, I am referring to both units.

But yes, I do agree that e-ink is my preference and the keyboard is fugly =( No Kindle Touch out in Aust yet thou… so I can only get my hands on the keyboard version!

        • That isn't the "Kindle 4", it's just called the "Kindle" while the 3 is called the "Kindle Touch", it's not a linear progression because this model is still sold and as mentioned, has more specs than the most recent one.

TLDR: There are currently 3 eReader Kindles being made and sold, but just 3 > 4 > 5

6" Wifi No Touch, No keyboard, Lighter than the Keyboard version(K3), I believe its slightly faster that the K3, Less storage thatn the K3, Battery not quite as long lasting as the K3. Read user reviews on link to get a feel for the differences some report the screens better than the K3 some say its the same. Personally I think the Kindle Touch is the pick of the Kindle devices but its not yet avaialbe in Oz and it depends what you want to pay.

I base these comments on what I've read in reviews and forums I own a Sony Reader not a Kindle.

        • -1

just get it from amazon direct they have free shipping, and its cheaper!

  • +1

Did a bit more research on my own, looking at UK and US refurbished units
    According to this thread
"as already confirmed by amazon, these are units that have not passed quality control due to marks on the case etc, they are not rebuilding faulty ones"

    source: http://www.amazon.co.uk/forum/kindle?_encoding=UTF8&cdForum=…

Seems like a few customers bought refurbish ones, some got 'minor' scratches. But a few got it as pristine new!
So I guess it's based on luck fingers crossed
I am definitely buying one =)

  • Damn, just bought from Grays. Could have saved myself the $9.95 delivery charge.

  • +3

Sorry for all the posts :) I just thought that all the new kindle owning ozbargainers might like to customise their Kindle with some funkier screen savers to make you grin even when you are putting it down! Here is the complete guide with files and links. (this keyboard kindle is known as the 'k3w')

    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/37424/jailbreak-your-kindle-f…

Very painless process compared with jailbreaking anything apple!

    • Woot! Jailbreak kindle =)
I am up for any jailbreaking action~

I guess this is the best if you bought from US and want to get rid of that pesky advertising specials?

      • +1

advertising is for the US only, dont think they ship that model over here.

        • You can always use some USA shipping company and buy it over here =)
I've seen it done with the cheaper advert models!

        • +1

          @CuteChocobo

Think if you use a shipping company, you'd just about blow the $20 or so saving you make by choosing the advertising model.

  • Bought two from graysonline - they are pristine, and arrive in sealed original amazon kindle packaging (and the packaging doesn't show refuburished, just the packing slip - so good for gifts).

Great deal - two more family members are getting pre-loaded kindles.

  • +1

Don't forget that ATM Dick Smith has $20 cash back for spend over $200 on paypal… 2x kindles, some cases… and bam! Xmas presents for the parents are DONE!!

  • I've misplaced my cable for one of these puppies, anyone know hwere I can get it for cheap? its proprietary connector innit?

    • doesn't it just use a micro usb cable to charge?

  • +1

Bought one from graysonline a few weeks ago. Bit disappointed that I had to pay the extra shipping costs :P But grays were selling them on behalf of DSE and the one I received was BRAND NEW. brand new packaging and everything! So to everyone worrying about scratched cases etc. Don't! :D
