[PC, Mac] Luminar 4 includes Aurora HDR 2019 - Pay $35.39 AUD Min. (Value over $200+) @ Humble Bundle

100

Humble bundle bringing the heat with banger bundles recently (yesterday had the awesome VR bundle with Walking Dead S&S)
Todays bundle is Luminar 4 starting from $35.39 AUD and includes a stack of extra filters including the amazing planets one.
YMMV but Luminar 4 gets a pretty bad wrap from previous users of Luminar software as being a laggy POS but for $35 bones I'm willing to give it a go. There's also a 30 day trial available if you're not sure, and the humble bundle deal is alive for 20 days.

These days I dont really do much photography but in my former life before having a kid I'd spend literally hours sitting at my desk editing photos.
I'd always been curious about Luminar as a 1-stop (cheating if you will), filter option but the ozbargainer in me knew there was always going to be a better deal.

Previous best I could find was : https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/549466 $85.13 and did not include HALF the filters in this pack :)

Internet chatter also suggest Skylum Devs are dumping support of Luminar 4 from sometime next year, so dont expect any major updates from what's already out now.

It also includes Aurora HDR 2019 which is apparently award winning HDR software. It sells for $129 at full price but I dont really care about HDR :)
HDR landscapes are a very polarising (lol) topic among photographer enthusiasts. YMMV again.

  • I second the laggy Luminar experience. Some of its features are neat, but the performance is ridiculously bad.

  • I can easily recognize most works produced by this software, it is a smart software but imo the abuse of it really stops a beginner to advance to a better photographer/graphic editor. I would say save the money, try to capture the picture at the right time of the day, and try to study basic layers/masking editing with the free software such as Gimp will be better for a beginner in a long run.

    • Agreed. This type of software is super easy to go overboard. It's like hdr craze of the mid 2010s again.

That being said Trey Ratcliffe built a HUGE following from the Hdr craze back in the day.

  • Having said what I said, the discount is good. For me, I would be very interested in getting DXO photolab or some Topaz software in a discounted price. Those similar products specialized in AI noise reduction, sharpening, and ai masking will be helpful for photographers/graphic editors in any level.

  • Thank you, great bargain. Purchased it. Downloading everything now, appreciate the post. I've sailed the high seas to use this software before and know how powerful it is, and for anyone into photography (unless you believe in keeping the purity of photos - understandable), check out some reviews for Luminar 4 or videos to see its power. Very useful tool, and much cheaper than the alternatives at this price.

    • I enjoyed portrait professional, this seemed like an even better 1 trick pony haha

  • Compatible with M1 chips?

    • The three keys they provide for Luminar 4, Aurora HDR, and Photolemur 3 all expire (December 31st, 2021). Download links are available for both Windows and Mac. So as long as support comes for the M1 chip prior to that deadline (most likely next year, since even Adobe Suite won't be coming to the M1 until next year), then the keys should work.

This is of course assuming they don't stop making Luminar 4, and start making Luminar 5 (which would then be released with support for the M1 chip). So who knows.

      • Luminar 4 support is being dumped next year. I believe they're moving to subscription model.

        • That explains this special lol Thanks, if I knew this was confirmed 100% before purchasing, I wouldn't have purchased. Oh well, still worth supporting the devs after I used their program for a while through other methods.

          • @ThatsCheap: It was in my original post. Though I will admit it was a huge wall of text. For $35 I think its not too bad even if you do use it only a few times.

          • @ThatsCheap: To me that says this one is the one to get because its the highest version that you pay once and can use forever. Even if the next version runs faster youll be eternally paying more and more for it and they could make it crap in a forced update. Im really not a fan of the subscription model.

  • Was hoping for a special on Houdini, per their email subject haha.

  • This is a great deal. However, LuminarAI is coming out soon, which will be $108. (the upgrade from 4 to AI you save $10) So just be aware you are purchasing soon to be last year version. .

    • Fair. But $108 is a little out of my impulse buy/instant write off budget haha

For less than $36 its still a pretty okay package and not really outdated as such imo.

      • you can buy 2 seats and share it with a buddy? i am happy to share one seat for half

  • Ok, so I bought it and have been a long time fan of Luminar 3 after discovering from an Aurora HDR deal here on OzB some years ago. I have also done a lot of work to wean myself of the Adobe suite and ended up moving to the Affinity suite of software after much trial and error - i even put a doco together about whats good and cheap if anyone wants it ping me, but thats beside the point.

So remember its all first impressions, i have been using for about an hour. I don't use the built in looks, but do use the LUTs. For me its basically a quick editor or enhancer to replace lightroom - so everything is pretty manual and once I find a custom look for a shoot I copy it to the other photos from the same scene and tweak from there.

It just so happens I was testing out a new lens yesterday and decided to do it up in Luminar 3. The photo is of my mother in laws dog and she likes it flashy so I enhanced it quite a bit more than perhaps I normally would have to give it a bit of a "filter" look rather than a natural one.

The first big takeaway from 3 - 4 is they simplified the interface, and not for the better. Where before I could create a quick list of the filters I was interested in, add them to a "workspace" and then save that for easy access it has now been broken down into a few sections - essential, AI and advanced from what I can tell. I googled this change and many people are not happy - myself included. It looks like a number of filters have been simplified as well and some settings hidden behind an "advanced" button on the filter. Its probably much easier for novices to use, but for someone more experienced I think 3 might be better.

Other than that it didn't seem like a huge jump forward from 3 from the first impressions. If you are going to be using the AI stuff it might help, and there are quite a few more LUTs which is good, but having 3, and using it as a lightroom alternative, I may not use 4 at all.

I also grabbed the latest version of Aurora HDR and PhotoLemur that were part of the bundle and gave them a spin - I hadn't given photolemur a go before, its just "auto mode". Using that photo I did up yesterday I made a comparison of the outputs. This isn't that scientific - I wasn't trying to replicate the photo, but just enhance until I was happy in the respective programs.
