    Beat Lys :)

      • +9

        He works for Epic?

No wait… He has become one with the internet and now lives as a digital being on Ozbargain's servers?

      • +32

The backend code for Elite Dangerous was updated at 2.23am. Screenshot showing the proof was provided in the revised posting one minute later. The code was then updated two minutes later to include The World Next Door and a new screenshot was provided to show both games. All this was done well before 2:31:50. In fact, I even posted the second game on HUKD before the time you stated.

I look for the changes in the back end code and not other sites. Textorcist is an example. This game was posted on mydealz almost one hour before the backend code was updated. I could have tried to post this game but it had no evidence hence why I decided not to.

Hope the above clears any doubts you have.

You are a machine! Thank you for all your efforts and commitment to finding and posting deals on OzBargain. You have saved me thousands of dollars and helped me spend thousands of dollars on items I do, don't and never thought I needed… in true OzBargain style. You are a legend!

          • @Blasters: I'd like to hear about the deals that dealbot has specifically saved you thousands on.

        • +21

And then there's me just logging in to Epic every Friday to grab whatever games are free.

        • +11

You dont need to explain this to someone who's just sour because he doesn't have exclusivity on who gets to post the weekly Epic Store deals

          • +3

@payton: The Epic exclusives drama never ends!

            • +5

@bargainpersona: Are upvotes worth money? I don't understand why it matters who posts the Epic game of the week.

              • +6

                @horseshoe: monthly financial incentive
Deals with the most upvotes is a criteria for one of the awards, and the weekly Epic Store freebies usually get hundreds of votes thus potentially getting you the prize.

It also serves to increase your positive vote average. Someone might post hundreds of low quality freebie games (under +5 votes) in a month, but if they can consistently nab the Epic Store deals as well, it will boost that Average Votes value so it doesn't look like they're posting rubbish 95% of the time. Hence why someone would want exclusivity and get mad if rivals posted it before they can.

Number of deals posted per month is also another prize category, doesn't matter if the deals are junk freebie games, so long as they're not unpublished.

      • +10

Can anyone explain your shitposts and made up drama whenever dealbot gets to post the epic store giveaway instead of you?

      • +1

I log in every Friday morning to update Lys for the commitment to these deals. Now i have to upvote both of you.

    • +14

His charade is pretty transparent. The lawyering daydreams, like claiming of 'giving a copy of negative ozb comments about himself to the police', and fancying having the ozbargain owner coming to him for advice about managing the site (out of all things).

Here's some of his Ace Attorney moments… trying to spread fear and uncertainty on someone else's deal, cursing an imagined 'dopey Epic Store intern' etc

I thought OzBargain was the one site where I could avoid any internet drama…. guess not

      • 'giving a copy of negative ozb comments about himself to the police'

If he's in Tas as he says he is, do you know what Taspol's response is to online harrassment? Restraining order. A fellow OzBargainer was receiving death threats a while ago and that was their response.

        • What would a restraining order mean in terms of online interactions? Can they no longer neg/reply to/tag/post in same thread as/be logged into OzBargain concurrently?

          Honest question, despite my examples.

          • @bargainpersona: It would be more a case of if it went to court, they'd need to get chat logs, but since the person is in another state it's complicated etc etc. They really weren't interested basically.

        • Huge oversimplification there. Links and context please.
Bit like saying: What is the police's response to crime? They shoot the criminals.

          • +1

@payton: My point is what are they really going to do? His threats are empty as he'd have to go to court for anything to actually happen.

Then again legal threats around here gets you banned …

        • -2

          You are a real champ.
Look at your demands in the penalty box discussion and then you are so much worse than all the people you demand get placed in the penalty box.

One example: "I cite a recent example here where a far-left scumbag had gone on personal attacks".

You were even told there that this is a bannable offense - you were just lucky Neil overlooked it that time and used it as an example of what not to do.

Strange that when you attack people it is okay but for everyone else you demand the penalty box.

Clearly shows your character and that you appear to be resistant to learning.

          Have a great life.

          • +3

            @Lysander:

all the people you demand get placed in the penalty box.
for everyone else you demand the penalty box.

Nice try at spinning a false narrative based on hugely inflated statements.
'for everyone else', 'all the people'
For the record, my discussion with neil was about one store rep who has been caught sockpuppeting multiple times. That store rep's post had multiple ghost accounts boosting the + vote.

Clearly shows your character and that you appear to be resistant to learning.

You made legal threats to ozbargain members, you also frequently tried to sabotage dealbot's posts (thankfully without much success).
And the cherry on the top, you hilariously let slip a few things that reveal what you confidently assert will happen in Australia. Must be quite tone deaf to not realise you're airing your own dirty laundry?

In 20 years time at the most (providing immigration levels keep steady) everyone in Australia will be learning Chinese as the second official language and after that it becomes a native language.

By that time at least 1/3 of the population will be Chinese so there will be little to no resistance to introducing a parallel official language. De facto, economically, Australia is already a dependent of China.

            • @payton: And those statements are what, false?
Had a look at the immigration numbers from the last ten years and the increase in population from certain regions lately?
It is not even a judgment but clearly if maybe 40%-50% of a population speaks one language, it is quite normal for it to become an official language (example, see Belgium, Switzerland etc.).
In fact, immigration statistics show Chinese is by far the largest official community language for immigration purposes.

Have looked at economic numbers and news? Why do you think so many people are worried if the government takes a firm stance on China? Because Australia is greatly dependent on China.
Example: recent ban of products from certain Australian abattoirs.

So, really, I do not see your point here. Nothing I say is factually wrong and it is not a judgment.
But I see from you statements in various threads that you clearly are leaning towards a certain political spectrum and attitude that appears more inclined than others to favour alternative facts. ;-)

I am not sabotaging anyone, just want the same rules applied for everyone which I thought was the point you argued for in the penalty box discussion. But again, different if you do than when others, including myself do it. Of course, of course.

If people are asked to stop stalking and harassment and start personal attacks, and they refuse to do so, then tell me why that should be acceptable.
I am not raising legal issues without grounds and it is only a reaction to the disgusting behaviour of some people here.
If you believe it is all mumbo jumbo, you are welcome to test the theory that police will not take such matters seriously, especially if anti-bullying and other organisations get involved. Feel free.
All I am saying is to put your money where your mouth is but if you are not prepared to follow through, then do not make such loud noise and maybe stay away.

And for the record, while sockpuppetting might lead to skewed deal evaluation, it does not represent a personal attack on people. In my opinion, from a human, individual (not commercial) view, attacking people and calling them scumbag etc. is 10 times worse than sockpuppetting.
              Maybe think about that!
And now I kindly ask that you leave me alone and in peace, please as I have got a lot better things to do than to deal with people like you and would rather spend the time running the two charities for the poor and vulnerable I manage both of which are operating today.
              Thank you.

              • +2

Nice freudian slip there, wonder if in real life you're quite open about your desired mass culture shift in Australia, or just where you feel a sense of anonymity.

you clearly are leaning towards a certain political spectrum

                See above

                to favour alternative facts. ;-)

you wrote this the same day you're questioning neil's honesty and suggesting an alternative fact of your own, not to mention you feel its appropriate for you to be auditing the head admin of ozbargain with cringe questions like 'have you ever banned yourself' and just checking if power users and moderators have immunity.

If you believe it is all mumbo jumbo, you are welcome to test the theory that police will not take such matters seriously, especially if anti-bullying and other organisations get involved. Feel free.

Did you actually follow through with your threats of dobbing ozbargainers to the police?
Check out the bolded text. What is that?

                • -7

@payton: Mate, not everyone is as resistant to learning from their mistakes as you.
If people stop, then there is no need. Do you know what "prepared" means? Obviously not.
So questioning one's honesty is an alternative fact? Sure, because everyone is the world always tells the truth, especially if business and money is involved, right? Ha, ha, ha. I wonder why something like the judiciary exists then. Questioning whether rules are applied uniformly? Not allowed in payton's world. Reminds of a bloke with wild blonde hair and a former fav of Fox News. Hmmmm??!
But maybe, if you just continue with this harassment, and provocation (and the clear right wing attitude) you might just find out. And if you are so sure I won't do it, send me your name and address to make it easier for the police.
I will make it clear now: I do not want any more harassment, bullying, provocation etc. from you. Just find someone else.

                    @Lysander: eating popcorn

                  • @Lysander: I don't want to buy into this but don't write comments about crimes trying to be a hero without any evidence that such claims are real. Use your brain for something better than arguing and stating someone deserves jail time for posting a freebie. He isn't leaking any intellectual property your energy is better spent on something actually productive. THIS IS NOT IMPORTANT AND SO PLEASE DONT WASTE YOUR TIME AND OTHER PEOPLE'S TIME exploring your fantasy worlds.

                    • -3

@ColdFusion: Maybe have a quick look at the relevant legislation and laws both in Australia and the US re revealing confidential information/leaks.
There are also a few more famous examples such as the guy who was sued by Epic I believe for revealing some Fortnite info early.

                      https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.polygon.com/platform/amp/fo…

                      • @Lysander: Well, report him then rather than talking about him for risk of being an accessory to the crime!!!

      • +2

Wow. Pathetic and cringe worthy the lengths this guy goes to. I hope dealbot beats him at every Epic deal now lol.

      • Oh FFS thanks for the context, wanders aways shaking my head.

  • +4

Looks like this is where the free games end for me.

When you try to get a game now they make you sign a waiver preventing you from taking them to court: https://puu.sh/GML9N/b72bfe3a93.png

I highly doubt this is legal in Australia, but i won't be accepting it on principle anyway.

    • +43

Vote with your wallet. Take the free games, sign their dubious document but never invest a dollar in their store.

    • Nice to know, thanks

      • +16

By what reason would you need to take Tim Sweeney to court for using their free games though?

        I ain't Tim Apple.

        • +5

It's good to know what rights you are potentially signing away. And there's reasons why legal rights are protected by law. It's unlikely I'll ever need them, but the same goes for fire extinguishers and insurance.

          • +17

@Michael15286: I think you overestimate the strength of the commericial relationship between yourself and epic.

If all you are doing is getting free games then what is the potential downside, given what's in that boilerplate.

They dont have my payment details. They dont even have my real address or name details.

            So what now?

            • +4

@tonyjzx: How about a massive security hole in their launcher or network which then compromises your PC or linked accounts, or they illegally scrape your pc for inf or scramble your hard drive due to careless and reckless programming. Theres lots of things that could happen malicious or not on epics side which you might want to take them to court for.

Imagine applying for a job and the employer makes you sign a waiver to sue them for workplace harassment. You might not want to sue them or intend to but the ability is there for a good reason.

Ironically putting in a fake name and address makes it harder for you to sue them because they can use that to say it is not your account.

              • +3

@[Deactivated]: "Imagine applying for a job and the employer makes you sign a waiver to sue them for workplace harassment. You might not want to sue them or intend to but the ability is there for a good reason."

No problem at all. You can happily sign it as such clause is illegal and unenforceable. The law trumps any terms and conditions or other company policies.

                • @epiqpwnage: Interesting account you have there. made in june and posting in here only. could we say shill account. enjoy your four 50 cents from epic and the ccp.

                • @epiqpwnage: You might want to read the ozbargain rules about shill accounts.

        • What if Epic games leaked your personal details, and you sue them for damages? they won;t be liable right under this new BS T&C?

          • -2

@neonlight: Epic should be taken to court for wasting everyone's time with video games. Even during Rona there are way better things to do.

            • @Naigrabzo: Yeah, bet you don't own a single TV and support book burning too because there's better things to do than read a fiction book.

              • @Agret: Nah man. I have a TV (waste of time) and read books also. Love ma education.

    • +8

I'm curious to know why you would want to take epic to court, in the context of getting a free game from them.

      nvm, tonyjzx already asked!

      • +1

If the software you download, be it the game or launcher either has a bug or is comprised and causes loss of data or leak of personal information from your computer.

          • @epiqpwnage: Hey relax. I simply was trying to provide an answer to why "you would want to take epic to court, in the context of getting a free game from them." which was the question as I saw it.

I can now see a thread evolved above.. which wasn't on my screen when I had this page loaded I guess. Not sure why you are jumping in a week late to prod people and call them trolls, just neg them and move on no need to draw out a rage fest.

      • :) tongue in cheek my friend. Anyone is free to make comments and attempt to take anyone to court of course.

    • +11

Steam does the same. Read their Teemsof Service

    • +2

how dare they, they give away a free game but they are trying to get you to sign your life away!
They will surely end up owning your house if you have one

    • +5

Looks like unfair contract terms with no legal validity in Australia:

      https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/contracts-agreements/unfai…

    • +2

Common law, you can't waive away your rights in Australia. Additionally that contract would be drafted with US law in mind.

    • +1

Looks like a normal run of the mill CYA policy to me and usually appears during an installation of any software including your OS, whether that be from a major company or a 3rd party dev sitting in their bedroom writing code. That said in Australia there can be consumer protection laws that in some cases can override the dribble in these terms just like the warranties and returns on a dodgy product.

    • Steam had the same thing for many years until the ACCC took them down.

It's not legally binding and they can't do a thing to enforce it and if they try, they will fail.

      • They got my house

  • this looks not bad for a free game, quite futuristic.

  • +3

Elite Dangerous came at the perfect time, I was considering it on Steam as I just got a Gladiator NXT. Can we have Il Sturmovik next please Epic 🤪

    • I bought it on sale around Christmas for $17 (after agonizing way too long given that pricve) and never got around to playing it past the beginning of the tutorial. Oh well. I can't begrudge others a freebie. Perhaps it will inject new life into the game for a while.

    • How? Did you import it?

      • Yes, from their AliExpress store. It's worth every cent and shipping although expensive was fast and via FedEx.

        • This store?

          https://www.aliexpress.com/store/3023007?spm=a2g0o.detail.10…

Damn I regret getting the T16000 now. Maybe I can resell it…

          • +1

@Subada: That's it, I checked them out and it's the official store for Australia. I can't comment on t16000 but I had the Hotas X and you can't compare them. The Thrustmaster was a toy in comparison. This is also modular so you can upgrade even more so in future.

            • @[Deactivated]: The t16000 is probably the best stick in its price range. Compared to a VKB or Virpil it probably is still toy-like but you're looking at a fraction of the price, so it's kind of a case of you get what you pay for, like comparing a Logitech G27 wheel with a direct drive wheel.

              • @Diji: Yeah there's a you get what you pay for factor there for sure. Remember though that the Gladiator NXT has a throttle slider and two engine dials so if you're shopping for that as well the process get closer as I don't think there t16000 has that feature at all so you jump to $260+ for the set with throttle.

                • @[Deactivated]: Yeah fair. I just have the stick and use the keyboard for other stuff. The throttle slider on the t16000 is awful lol.

Seems like prices have gone up though. I got mine for $60…

                • @[Deactivated]: Oh I just saw that VKB have a more affordable option now. They used to only have $500+ sticks.

                  • @Diji: Yeah I paid a little less than $300 for a premium Gladiator NXT FedEx shipped. Love it.

                    • +1

@[Deactivated]: I went for the Gunfighter 3 Space Combat edition and it was worth every cent. Do not buy from the Euro store though, shipping took 2 months!

            • @[Deactivated]: The thrust master was amazing but took a few months to get use to.

Not sure if I was using it right

  • +2

Look up Elite Dangerious Voice Attack videos on Youtube.

    • +4

This in combination with VR and a Hotas setup is my go to game. It's the only game I lose myself for hours not realising how long I've been in it. It now also comes with the free Horizons update in readiness for next years Odyssey expansion.

      • +1

Hmmmm yeah nah, I like to play it on a Sunday with a couple beers just to chillax but it is one of the few games that can and has put me to sleep, I find a lot of the gameplay on the boring side. I bought the base game very early on in development at 60 bucks when they promised a lot of content and then packaged it into a paid DLC so I am salty about that too I guess.

        • Yeah but aren't all the DLCs free (by which I mean included in the base game), apart from the current/latest one…?

          • @pigmyfart: All DLC up to now is included with the game. Next years Odyssey will be the next paid one

  • +2

Woosh, this games free? The game that's so accurate to space, so worldly to Microsoft flight simulator in space, it's the quintessential space SIM.

However what's the catch releasing a game like this, that's just as capable holding its self to star citizen(yet star citizen could never go free)

    • While it will include the Horizons DLC (according to the store page), there's new DLC coming "soonish" that definitely won't be included for free.

    • +1

It's free for a week, most likely in a bid to boost player numbers and get interest back in the game. If they can get more people playing it again, then the online portion becomes more alive and the game is more appealing again.

Epic gets a great freebie to get people to use/keep using their store
Elite Dangerous gets paid for everyone who gets it free
Elite Dangerous hopes it provides lasting upswing in popularity of the game and more purchases of it post the free week

      • So after law breakers crashing bad, and all these free to play games, developers are feeling left out, so releasing a 5 year old game/games gives them a slice.

      • Is it only free for a week at which time you have to pay? Or.. in a weeks time you can get the whole game for free?

I thought the latter was the case, but your post suggests that it's only free for a week's worth of play.

        • +3

The giveaway runs for the week. Epic changes it weekly.
You keep the game for "life".

This is an online only game (even in solo mode), but there is no subscription fee and the microtransactions are strictly cosmetic only.

But there is a new DLC coming soon and in typical MMO fashion your character will probably be a peasant without it.

    • +1

They have a major DLC coming out soon, which is essentially a new version of the game adding Star Citizen like FPS elements.
So free is to get new players on the hook who will then invest in the DLC.

    • what happened to star citizen? I sent them 10,000 after they said they will give me anything i want and be my best friend for life and let me have hologram in my avatar and let me fly without ship

      • I bought two $40 alpha packages and sold one for $200. So I basically got paid to try their tech demo.

  • Anyone know if the VR feature will work with the Epic version or do you need steam VR version for that?

    • +1

Not sure but when I bought it on Steam I asked the devs for a free Oculus key and they gave it to me. There was an option on Frontier Developments website to get alternative keys.

I can't see why it won't be in VR on the Epic version.

      • That option is still there but it does say its for people who purchased before 24th April 2019.

    • GNOG, given away free in the past on Epic Game Store, works with VR, and it works fine, it uses SteamVR, but can be launched from Epic store (If I remember correctly it'll launch steam and steamVR if it's not running, but I can't fully remember, been a while since I played it).

So… I'd imagine it would work.

Nice, I've been eyeing off Elite for a while. Thanks to both Dealbot and Lysander for your diligence in posting these.

And its kind of entertaining to watch you compete to get the deals up first. Can we start keeping score or something?

  • +3

Thanks to you both! I'll give it a try. Been a while since I played Elite and Elite Dangerous on my Amiga 500! Great memories!

For those jumping at the opportunity to get Elite Dangerous - by all means get it because it is an awesome game but it is not easy to master without a bit of commitment. Watch some tutorial videos as it is more like a simulator rather than an arcade game.

There are nuances to many things, you will make really frustrating mistakes, you will hear/read people doing things that are only possible after sinking 1000's of hours into the game. You don't need to enjoy the game the way others play it.

There is something particularly special about heading out in your first moderately kitted up spaceship and just exploring - mixed in with the occasional dieing. Exploring planetary rings, binary stars, etc, etc is all really quite amazing.

    • Is it any more (or less) complicated than say X3? (Which is the last space game I tried to get into.)

I can't answer that unfortunately, I've never played X3, but I have played many simulators over the years and ED is definitely a simulator. If you played the old Xwing
-vs- Tie Fighter series it is more complex than that.

I played the original elite back on a Commodore64 last century :-), so when ED came out as a multiplayer version came out I jumped straight back into it and had lots of fun with a couple of mates for close to 2 years… since then I've found another 2-3 friends who were also playing it at the time.

It's a bit "quiet" as far as MMO's go, because space is ridiculously big and because it lets you play online with "just your friends" as a shard. I've been playing games too long to bother with being a griefer or being a target of griefers so I never played the full open world.

        • TBH unless you find yourself in one of the main hubs of player activity, even in open you're basically playing in private.

    • Thanks for the heads up! Any good video channels you recommend? I had a look and there are tons haha

    • Why do people call this a simulator?

The defining characteristic of a simulator is realism, not a lack of game design. This seems to have neither.

Ships fly as though they're pushing through some sort of fluid and have a maximum speed… relative to what? I guess this unseen ether. Real space flight is all about relative velocities, gravity and the resulting orbital mechanics. This game has none of that.

I guess my main objection is that when you play/use a simulator, you learn about the real thing. But if you believe this game to be a space flight simulator, you'll be seriously misinformed.
