Telstra SIM Only Plan 80GB/Mo for $59/Mo (12M Contract) + $500 Bonus Gift Card @ The Good Guys (in-Store, New Customers Only)

2040

Needed a plan for my 16 year old daughter and itching to sign up to JB today (didn't really need anything at JB, plus I feel more COVID safe in a good guys store where it is spaced out) but noticed within the CIS JB and Good Guys is listed. Rang my local Good Guys store and asked if they can match JB offer and mentioned theirs will start tomorrow until Sunday. Going in first thing in the morning to sign up and finally get to upgrade our Oven (going to use the $500 towards that)

Hmm JB or GG? Which is better?

    • +5

Whichever stocks something you want to buy

    • +5

      Same company.

    • +1

Whichever you feel comfortable in and I guess whatever product you need.

Looks like they are connected somehow

      • +5

        JB owns goodguys now

      • +8

I’d hardly say they’ve been ripping us off but yes a multinational corporation with ridiculous buying power and no shop front overheads should be cheaper.

All fragrantly breach ACL and often even their own policies.

            Well that stinks

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: With Harvey it can be the case, even few staffs doesn’t like us from OZB when we storm their stores and asking for the same thing every hour (there’s a bit of Broden inside of us:))

With GG there’re no stores nearby so won’t be bothered.

But with JB I don’t think so since I never have bad experience with them. They’re quite professional apart from their casual appearances.

@[Deactivated]: Are you kidding? You can return things to Bunnings that you purchased two years ago, with no receipt, and they'll refund you.

            • +1

@brendanm: I tried returning a ~$120 leaking hose 6 months ago at a Bunnings store in Melbourne with no receipt but a copy of the bank statement ready on my phone. No worries, I thought, having checked their returns policy. Imagine my surprise when the manager refused to accept a clearly faulty item (that was less than a year old) because I didn't have the original receipt as I "couldn't prove it was purchased from here"… despite that brand only being sold at Bunnings. It took a phone call to their head office before he'd spend the two minutes to search the transaction on their systems to confirm it was purchased there.

I've heard many similar stories from family and friends who don't have the benefit of knowing their consumer rights under Australian law and have been taken for a ride by our monopolies as a result.

I'm not confrontational and experienced the displeasure of dealing with unreasonable customers in my shitty jobs during school and uni, but I have no sympathy for the declining Australian retail sector.

            • @brendanm: Agree - maybe its how ComfortablyNumb speaks to them? - I haven't had customer service problems with returns especially at Bunnings - they are very easy to return to.

              • @MrFrugalSpend: No, mate. Just because you have one experience doesn't mean everyone has the same.

                • @[Deactivated]: However I am not talking about one experience, I've returned several things to a couple of stores… And my comment was based on you clearly not talking about one experience - you are claiming bad experiences at a whole list of bricks and mortar stores - were you not?

Essentially, you got my back up because it's very bad for you to be so strongly advocating a site like Amazon over key bricks and mortar stores that actually employ people in our regional economy to the point that you are 'looking forward to the day Amazon does in these retailers'.

Australia's economic prosperity could be fairly short lived with continual shifts away from local manufacturing, to add in stronger shifts away from local retailing too, as well as angering China and feeling the effects in terms of resources and primary production, and the green push for foreign made solar and away from locally produced energy… that will massively dampen our economy. What we have left? International Tourism? Oh wait, the borders are closed… hmmm….that means less money in Australia circulating around, lower pays, Australian Dollar worth less, imported goods costing more… which means everything will get proportionally more expensive for all of us as our economy contracts. It's hard for people to think about the big picture but just look at the large number of comparably poorer countries and think about if you want to be them before "looking forward to" business closures in Australia.

          • @[Deactivated]: Sounds like somebody had their 8 year old heated blanket declined at the returns counter

            • @MEGASERVE: All of my experiences with returns have been for faulty items purchased within the 2 years prior.

As per usual, you can do this as a telstra customer. Add a new service to your account with new number (eligible for gift card and discount), then once service is active ask to have your old number ported to your new service (assuming you aren't already locked into a contract).

    • You sure about that? I’ve heard it is possible, however isn’t guaranteed as its against Telstra rules. Don’t want to end up with a new contracted number and the old one….

      • Worst case scenario you can break early ($414 ETC), sell your gift card for 450 and you aren't out of pocket.

But it did work for me.

      • Worked for me. I dont think the support people care about the sales rules

        • You’re right. They don’t care up to a point they don’t care about you as a customer:)

      • Krios42 is 100% correct. I have done it being existing Telstra customer. Just go on Telstra chat to sort it out

    • can anyone vouch for this? was planning to port out for 30 days. But if this works that would be super sweet.

      • +3

It is possible, have done it myself last time this deal was on. You'll need both numbers under the same name/account.

Ask for a "change of fnn" on Codi once the new number is active. If the CS don't know how, just restart chat and repeat.

        • Do you swap the two or end up losing one (the new number)?

          • @quarrymaster: You can do either depending on what works for you.

          • +3

@quarrymaster: You lose the new number.

Essentially the process involves the following

            1. They disconnect your mobile service with the number you want to keep

            - this sends your number into quarantine
            2. They then do a "change of fnn" order on your new service (the one that you got with this deal)
            - they can select your old number but have to do an override given the number is in quarantine
            3. Once that change of fnn order goes through, your new SIM card will have your old number.

            See https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/98pr2wk9#r49409513

I had this done a few weeks ago and the whole thing took about 30 mins or so. Technically they're not supposed to use this "change fnn" order except for specific circumstances (e.g. nuisance calls or telstra error) but the overseas staff will just do it anyway.

WARNING: do NOT attempt this if the number you want to keep is not originally from telstra. Once telstra releases the number to quarantine, it goes back to the original provider and I don't think Telstra can pull those out of quarantine since they don't own them.

            • @[Deactivated]: Good summary of the process! However, this process don't necessarily make you lose the new number. Both number can be retained as they did this for me. You'll definitely lose the previous plan you are on, you have to sign up to a new plan (which can be m2m) to retain both numbers.

              • @assailantsky: It probably depends on how the operator does the orders. I think they can use a temporary/new third number to avoid disconnecting the new JB/TGG plan. I didn't care about the number I ported since that was a prepaid number i bought specifically for these deals.

            • @[Deactivated]: Question about the warning, so my number is on Telstra prepaid at the moment, which I ported over from Vodafone last year. Do they count as the original provider?

            • @[Deactivated]:

Well, the number was originally way, way back from Vodafone (Vodac), but we've been using this number with Telstra for at least two or three years. Are you saying it's not worth it?

              That's wrong.
I have done it with non Telstra numbers

            • @[Deactivated]: Got it done today. Seemed to go well. The original service on the phone went SOS, the new service seemed to stay available, and then shortly after by magic, calling the old number rang on the phone the new TGG Plan was on. Sweet!

        • Does this work with Boost?

          • @Innately Incognito: No you can't number swap with a Boost number. But if you port out of boost to another non Telstra provider (and not belong) in the morning, you'll be able to sign up to this deal as a port-in in the arvo (if not quicker, depending on port times). Don't think they can see your Boost account like they can with Telstra accounts.

I was with belong when the last deal came around. I ported out to Lebara in the morning and signed up in store in the arvo. They asked who I was with and I said Lebara. Had no problems.

          • @Innately Incognito: I was with boost. Bought a 14$ Lebara. Ported in 5 minutes. The immediately went over to tgg and told them I had a Lebara and application was done. some delay due to Telstra site being busy (most likely ozbargained) but got ported in 1 hour.

        • Hey mate do you know whether the live chat option has been replaced now with the mytelstra messaging option?

      • I just did this exact thing today.

      • I ported my number out and within the same day went and got this deal. No need to wait 30 days.

    • so do you ask them to add a new service when you go into the shop? or is that something you do online?

      • +1

Yes, get a new service (number) as per the deal. Then once the number is active, go to the online chat and ask Codi for a change of fnn.

        • Do you know if you can port the number across to the new Telstra account if you are currently with Belong?

          • +1

@OliveM: See my reply to yoz above. In short, no. The way to do it is to port out first.

        • thanks, if you are getting a new service added in store, then connect to live chat to move your old number to the new service then don't you still have two services at the end?

What happened to the service of your old number? is that cancelled out with the move of fnn?

          • @MrBillions: For me, when I did the "swap", the CS said I can't keep the old plan (it was post contract, on m2m). He had to sign me up to a new m2m plan to keep the new number. So yes, you'll still have two service at the end, if this is what you want. You can just as easily ask them not to keep the new number. I only signed up to the new m2m plan and keep the new number in the hope that the CS will be more willing to do the swap. I cancelled the new service a few days after…

    • They are agreeing to do this less and less lately.
But risky you might get stuck with a contract you can’t get out off

      • -1

Why do you need to get out of contract, need an active service anyways.

    • +1

Fyi, you don't 'port' your old number to your new number. You are just changing the number, in Telstra terms a 'Change FNN' order is required

    • Can confirm works. Did this with my prepaid Telstra no a couple months ago

    • +6

Yeah, cmon OP! You should let strangers on the internet goad you into standing in a tightly packed store in the middle of a global pandemic. It's not your right to choose whether you want to or not, and we should openly mock you for your choices and assert your cowardice.

(I'm joking. Please don't do that.)

      • +4

Agree. While I think the risk is low as to be almost non-existent, who gives a poo about what anyone else does/thinks with their own lives. They’re being SAFER… at the end of the day, even if the risk is low, it’s safer for everybody else too!

        • I didn't realise you were a medical specialist. Whats the morbidity rate long term for this illness?

  • +10

So here’s an idea… how about Telstra just lower their prices a little instead of pumping out these silly gift card deals…

    • -1

I'm happy with a gift card every year to be honest

    • +1

How can we claim the $708 on our tax and upgrade our phone/TV every year then. Rich get the picture. Poor get your sister.

    • -2

      That's so true.

    • +1

Similar data on Vodafone (100 gb) is $45/months, that’s $540 per year.

This is $708/year with a $500 GC which you can:
      A) sell it for 5-10%off
      B) Use if to whatever you want it to but at the store.

Fail to see what’s wrong with this deal.

      • +1

For me can’t add int calls on Telstra deal, I know Viber, WhatsApp all there.

      • My laziness is what's wrong with this deal.

      • +1

Saw that also but prefer the Telstra coverage. I am currently with Vodafone and reception hit and miss when I travel.

    • +1

Would be nice but TBH need to get a new oven anyways. Might not be for everyone but I think its a pretty good value especially when you gotta buy something anyways.

    • Duh. Because this works better for them. Not everyone claims the giftcard.

  • +1

    What oven are you getting?

    • +9

      Dutch.

      • +2

Lol plenty of that at home

    • +1

      Fire

    • +2

      OB60SD11PX1 looking at this one

  • Unable to find it anywhere on jb or tgg site … am i missing something ?

    • +1

It will be like the post from JB doing it the other day. In store only, so won't be on their websites. Similar to the $69/month plan but with $10 off per month and a higher GC.

    • +1

Yeah I asked the same thing when I rang but sales person was adamant it is available tomorrow. Pay to check with your local good guys store. I wouldn't have though it would just be for my local store and available across all stores.

      • +2

Ahan … Thanks … will call tomorrow … any idea if GC can be used on Good Guys Commercial ?

        • What's good guys commercial?

  • Great deal, just signed up to the same offer from JB yesterday when I picked up the PS5. Been a good week!

    • And here i am, Hoping to get PS5 in HJ's draw 😂

    • Do you get voucher straight away?

      • Order from app above $10 … You will get invoice in email … Take a snapshot … click PS5 link in app … it will open entry page … fill details and upload invoice … takes a minute hardly … they will send accepted entrance email … 15th Nov is last date. Fingers crossed.

      • Based on the last time I did this, if you’re porting in a number, then you get the gift card once the porting is complete; so that could be 15 minutes, 2 hours or 24 hours as it varies so much.

If it’s a new number, you should get the card once your service has been activated.

      • Yes, but the port must successfully happen in store or you will need to come back to collect it when it happens. For example Kogan takes longer to port across compared to Optus (almost instantly for me)

  • Thanks for the post, am sick of current provider and need to jump on the better network I think.

  • +1

Does anyone know if these plans support an add on watch plan?

    • +1

No problem, I was on Jbhifi plan and was able to activate Telstra One service on my iWatch

  • +1

The JB deal is definitely on, ported my daughters number from Vodafone to Telstra $69-$10 plan with 60+20gb data and GC of $500. They also have a $99-$10 plan with 150gb data and GC of $500. Did it at JB Southland . Only thing is you cannot add international call pack with this deal.

  • Does anyone know if Optus does similar deals to this?

    • $400 Harvey Norman GC for $65/month. Minimum is 12 months.

  • Cool

  • Any chance of this working for a brand new service (without porting from another provider)?

    • +1

Yea it works for new and port in customers as a sim only plan

      • Perfect thanks!

  • JB Elizabeth St and Bourke St Melbourne said it's back to $400.

    $500 ended yesterday.

    • Did they say how long the $400 deal is valid for?

      • Staff member at good guys told me its going back to $400 gift card until 22nd of this month
