Ewh special edition…? Probably no shuck?

    • -2

Why? A hard drive is a hard drive, dont worry about the marketing.

      • +3

Some of them have the USB controller on the logic board, so there's no SATA interface. That'd be a no-shuck drive. I don't know about this drive though.

        • +1

Oh right, i wasnt aware of those - are they super uncommon? Just about ever enclosed 3.5 drive i see is able to be ripped out and shucked

        • +3

I've only seen this on WD 2.5" drives, and its pretty endemic there. All the Seagate ones I've seen have been SATA interface, though I'm no expert in the matter. Either way, 3.5" drives are usually pretty safe?

I'm hoping for some Ironwolf deals soon. Or I'll have to start deleting 'Linux ISOs'.

    • +2

How many distros are you hoarding?

  • If you're into shucking, I wouldn't consider this drive at all. WD Elements is the best value drive on the market today. Guaranteed shuckable drive.

    • -1

Except at 8TB and under WD have been known to use SMR drives…

      • +1

        I didn't think the 8tbs were?

      • +3

Wrong, 8TB and above = CMR for WD. It's Seagate who uses SMR for 8TB drives and below.

  • More words? How many do you need?
It is estimated that 687,194,760 pages of Word documents would fill an 8 terabyte hard drive

He said that because the ozbargain page requires minimum words for description. He just added “words” to make up words. 😁

I know.. been here a while. Just bad comedy

  • Had this in my cart, but opted for the $141.77 6TB version out of fear of data loss.

    • For me, a 5tb portable is about $150, and so 6th external for $141 is not worth it.

  • Is it reliable enough? I am looking to upgrade my Toshiba 3TB drive

    • +1

Reliable in what department, depends on your usage of to read and write 24/7 non stop probably, for speed probably not.

      • I am going to plug this in my router and setup as SMB

  • That's a good price for a non ssd/nvme, stationery drive.

  • +2

    8TB Seagate = SMR

  • +3

Shuck Drive = Seagate Barracuda ST8000DM004

    7,200-RPM
    Capacity 8TB
    Interface SATA 6Gb/s
    Cache 256 MB

  • Worth biting now or waiting for Cyber Monday?

    • I'm hanging out for Black Friday and Monday for hopeful drops on the hard drives again. Be great if we see the prices as low as prime day again.

  • My arrived today
