That's just weird, 50' and NOT FULL HD

    I'd rather not.

    • Makes for a f***king awesome cheap MAME monitor.

    • -1

If you are only wathching TV, with dvd I think HD would be good enough.
All tv contents are in HD only (some even in standard digital)
Just remember a friend bought one HD 50" for $8000 years ago!

      • -3

just realized, its not even 720p!

        • says "Screen Resolution 1024 x 768p"

    • +8

That used to be true for the old plasmas when they first came out. Newer plasmas are quite efficient and long lasting. Most manufacturers now claim 100,000hrs life from the panel (that's 34yrs at 8hrs/day), and this particular model was awarded a 5 star energy rating. A plasma versus a similar sized LED TV will run you about an extra $20-$40 per year for power, the higher figure being for the el-cheapo brands with little to no energy efficient technology.

Not really a TV I would want, for reasons already pointed out by other above eg not Full HD etc.

But at about $464 for this tv once you apply the CBA code, pay by paypal and claim 3% MBC - the price for that much inch-age is the lowest around. PQ would be a different story though - surely ok for a kids room or maybe spare room?

    • Does it work? anyone try to get it to "$464"?

    just thinking..

my parents purchased 50" FULL HD LG PLASMA for 3000 3 years ago.

all they do is watch DVD's and Free to Air TV on it.

Both of those mediums are only 768p or less….makes me wonder why they even got FULL HD…

Good deal if you're just going to be watching TV cos it won't make scratch of a difference.

    • +5

Bought this model for my elderly Father 6 months back - for same reasons. Quite impressed. He just watches TV & there is no way his eyesight could tell the difference even if there was a Full HD input.

      • +8

how nice of you to buy a TV for your Dad. Most people expect it to be the other way around.

        Kudos to you.

    • +3

That's all the vast majority of people do, watch standard definition TV (576i) on their full-HD screens. They don't play blu-rays or get any other form of hi-def. Half the people I visit don't even have an upconverting DVD player or HDMI cable in their setup. Then they come around to my house and can't believe it when I pop in a nicely mastered blu-ray. Otherwise they just don't know what they are missing.

Also, a lot of what is broadcast on so-called hi-def channels is just upconverted from SD (I'm talking to you GEM). Australian TV needs to get their act together. Why aren't we broadcasting shows in all their glory (instead of "Cops").

      • Even if you do watch Blurays, there's practically no true 1080p content out there. The vast majority (like 95+%, being generous) of "FullHD BDs" are upscales (either that, or the studios apply so much low-passing that all the FullHD detail is killed).

Don't trust me? Try this little test: take a screenshot off a 1080p source (preferrably a detailed scene), downscale it to 720p then upscale that back to 1080p (using a decent scaler, like Spline36 or similar) and compare it with the original. You may be surprised at the lack of difference between the two, even under close examination.
Hell, if you can get a true 1080p source, try the test and see how much of a difference you can tell. Most people struggle to objectively be able to identify the higher resolution content, despite it being more than double the number of pixels.

So for now, 720p is more than adequate for pretty much everything. Perhaps not in the future…

        • So is there a reason why this wouldn't be considered a deal? :s

  • I remember when a 51cm (21 inch) Sharp stereo TV cost $1299.

    • +3

The pixel aspect ratio is irrelevant - it just means the pixels are oval shaped rather than square. Makes no difference to viewing quality. You probably ran your old 17" or 19" CRT monitor at 1280x1024, which is 5:4 aspect ratio even though the screen was 4:3 - did you notice anything wrong with the picture?

      • Your old CRT TV was limited to 625 lines interlaced (refreshed at 50Hz giving you 25 fps). I'm curious, why are you comparing that to a computer monitor?

        • +1

          I"m talking CRT monitor.

  • +2

Does full HD make much of a difference? Sounds like a good deal to me?

    • If you are happy just watching the standard definition channels then it's fine. At some point you may wish you had full-HD but at this price I guess you could consider buying it and using it until then.

Unless you buy (or rent) blu-rays there is precious little hi-def content on TV these days (who wants hi-def news or old TV shows upconverted to 1080i).

    • It will make a diff if you hook up as a pc monitor later.

    • +3

Took my elderly Father to JBHiFi to see this set against the wall of Full HD TVs 6 months back. Unless you knew what you were looking for, there was not that much difference - at normal viewing distance. (Only sets costing $2000+ looked sharper, had better blacks, etc) Certainly he could not see any difference apart from the price tag. Paid $634 +$45 delivery, so at $599 -$100 CBAtv -$20 paypal -about $4 frequent flier points earnt = $475 delivered - good deal. Pity I don't need another one.

    • +1

It's $479, don't worry about it. Quality of the panel + Contrast Ratio mean more than a good res. I'd much prefer this over a Soniq 1080p IMO.

      • The QFF points are worth almost another $4, so $475.
He's very happy with it, & I got best deal I could find at time, thats all you can do - and just enjoy it.

  • QHD, where art thou?

  • -4

deal finished , the link now says $599

    • +1

Not finished until the end of the day. The listed price has been $599 throughout. You have to apply the code "CBATV" in the checkout to get $100 off.

    • Not over.. follow instructions and it becomes 499

  • Nice price $645 at 2nds World.

My Uncle bought a Samsung 50" PS51D450A2 (1366x768) for $578 on the weekend. He can't tell the difference between his TV and my Full HD Samsung 50" 3D PN50C7000. He's in his 60s with poor eye sight.

As long as the TV meets your needs, it's money well spent.

    • Deal not over , just purchase one at $499 with CBATV code.

    • Where'd he get it for that price? Could you possibly scan the receipt? $698 at JB with no bargaining… I'd like to go in with something for them to match, at least :)

  • +2

I just bought one, not bad for 50" for the inlaws, theyll be amazed by the size, wont care about it not being full hd!!

    Nice find poster, thanks!

  • -4

This looked like a pretty damn good TV deal, until i realized it was 1024 x 768.

They have mobile phones with better resolutions than that.

    • +4

hmmm! Read some comments above. It is more than many people's requirements.
I would much love a x768 50inch than a 40" full hd for the same price for my movies any day as I sit about 5 meters from the TV anyway. I am 28 and I don't notice any difference.

  • Hi guys,

Really interested in this. Although just wondering how this monitor is for playing PS3 games and maybe hooking up the pc to the monitor?

    • PS3 fine for gaming.
PC fine for movies and photos.
PC not so fine for web and normal PC use like Word etc - will be quite blocky.

  • -6

    pffff. HD only.. thanks dick!

Went to DSE during lunch and spent a good 45 minutes with the rep playing with this tv. Viewed bluray, DVD, one hd and seven sd.

To be honest I am pleasantly surprised by what this unit can pull off! Having seen 1024x768 50" plasmas in the past, I knew how bad they can look - but not so with this unit. The processing chips have improved vastly to give a much better quality picture than before. LG has lots of tweaks running in the background and to that extent some things do look a bit "generated" for lack of a better word, but at this price, there's a lot of TV for your dollar!

Externally, the unit looks pretty damn good too - super thin chassis and glossy screen, almost too glossy. Compared to the expensive units around it, this one held it's ground well.

    • +5

you put me at ease, I thought i made a mistake by getting this tv but it doesn't seem that bad… especially for the elderly :)

      • +2

Glad to hear, I got it for my grandma - her CRT went wonky so early xmas present. Was originally going for a 32" at $350 but once I saw this in the flesh, for just $100 more after paypal, mbc and qff - I couldn't resist. I know she's gonna be mega pumped. Her CRT was a 51cm!

        • +1

Legend, your Nan will be happy indeed :-)

Could not resist……. so I just got one for the inlaws to replace their old 68cm CRT!

          Thanks poster :o)

        • +2

Cheers, it was hard to hold it in when I spoke to her tonight. Want to surprise her when the actual thing arrives. She was a bit down in the dumps as she had that CRT forever.

Your in-laws will be mighty stoked too, major brownie points :)

Definitely big thanks to the OP :)

    • Yes. Same surprisingly thin for a plasma and look very nice.

  • +1

Bought one. $474.05 delivered.. Woollies 5% staff discount. I'm building a new house with the theater part of the lounge room, so this will be a good tv when not using the full hd projector.

  • +2

    Can't resist….. got one! Thanks poster :o)

  • +2

At this price, just buy it, the less you know the happier you will be when you boot it up.

  • is HD better for gaming? 360/ps3 etc.

  • how heavy is this TV anyone know?

  • I'm almost ready to buy this TV, but the 4:3 resolution on a 16:9 panel makes me worried, as I heard that means the pixels are rectangular. Does that make for a crappy image? (beyond the obvious fact of having half the pixels of a 1080p, that is.)

    • +1

No, the shape of the pixels makes no difference.

      • Thanks!

  • If you are not sure, leave the unit in its box and take advantage of the Dick Smith 14 Day Change of Mind policy…

  • does it have USB PVR ?

    • from specs it has: USB 2.0Yes (h.264/HD DivX,JPEG,MP3) but no mention of PVR

    • No PVR
Built in PVRs can only pause/Rewind/record current program.
Recordings can be played by most TVs with a USB input.
Better to have dedicated twin tuner PVR so you can record programs other than only the one being watching. If you are watching it, you usually don't need to also record it.

  • thanks sujd ,i'll wait for a PVR

  • i have not got mine yet :(
