I bought one of these so I could read in the bathtub, because it's waterproof. But I could never bring myself to use it nearwater all the same, too scaredy :(

    • not soapy water proof

      • I bet if I held it above the water then it'd be fine, and if I dropped it for a second and quickly rinsed it under clean water it would be fine. But I'd feel pretty stupid if it broke like instantly.

149 on Amazon, 189 for the 32GB version

    • you can't use the 15% off gift card on amazon

    • I'm thinking of getting the $99 for the mrs for Christmas (non Paperwhite one). Why would anyone need 32GB for an eReader? How many books do people need to carry around?????

      • Many people use these to read manga or comics so they need them to be large. There are some Squirrel People ‘Buy but never read' as well.

I'd spring for the Paperwhite tbh. It's worth the couple extra bucks.

THe reason people go for larger capacity is if they use it for audiobooks. I just use my phone for that. Like pretty much everyone normal.

Thanks for the advice. Waterproof and storage seems to be the only difference but…

          • @PainToad: also the DPI as well 167 vs 300. PW is more clear on text but if you do not look in detail, Kindle is fine.

          • @PainToad: The basic kindle is a great bargain, now it's got built in lighting, but the flush face and higher res of the paperwhite just makes it much nicer to read on.

Neither one is a bad choice here :)

@PainToad: No, the resolution is significantly different. Paperwhite the font is much sharper, it's like comparing the original pixelated mobile screens to when they all went "retina" or "HD".

Also the Paperwhite has a fully flush screen, while the $99 has an indented screen and the screen surface itself is of lesser quality (rougher to the touch). The Paperwhite also has better lighting which also leads to better contrast.

You're really losing a lot for $50, these devices can easily last you 5-10yrs, the batteries kick on forever since at their peak it's like 2-3wks, so as they age, you still get a solid 5-7days.

I wouldn't personally skimp $50 to lose all that.

      • Audiobooks

        • Why wouldn’t you use your phone for audio books? Bluetooth headphones would already be connected to your phone anyway…

          • @PainToad: Personally, I would use my phone. But some people like to have their "books" (regardless of media type) on one device. Which has its merits I guess, but 8Gb is plenty for me.

    • I combined the 10% Shopback cashback for Amazon devices with the Zip Pay 10% Amazon cashback for the 32gb version, took it down to ~$153. Remember that signing up to Zip does involve a credit check though… These promotions would work for the 8gb version as well, should take that down to ~$120. Only valid for the Black Friday weekend.
