  • If you're going to be spending this much on a portable screwdriver IMO may as well spend a little more and get one with the inbuilt bit holder/switchers.

Anyone know if this has a variable speed trigger?

    • 2 clutch settings (200 and 600RPM).

      • That's got nothing to do with a variable trigger

        • +1

Do you know what 200 and 600RPM means ?

          It doesn't say 0-600RPM…

          • @jv: Yes that it has 2 speed settings limited to either 200 or 600 revolutions per minute.

But my question was does this vary relevant RPM depending on how much pressure is on the trigger like everyo other full size drill.

          • @jv: So do you understand the QUESTION ??

            • @DannyBoy:

              do you understand the QUESTION

              You asked about variable speed.

Yes it varies. It is either 200RPM or 600RPM.

              • +2

@jv: They could be maximums like a standard drill. Have you used this product?

                • @DannyBoy:

                  could be maximums

It could be, but that is not what it says…

                  https://www.ryobi.com.au/products/details/4v-screwdriver-r4s…

                  • 2 speeds (200 and 600RPM), to suit a wide range of tasks
                  • +1

@jv: What do you mean it could be, that's exactly what it means. You select 200rpm and it doesn't go 800??!!

You taking the piss or what?

                    • @DannyBoy:

You taking the piss or what?

You asked if it was variable speeds and the Ryobi site states that it is two speed…

Whether that is 'variable' enough for you, only you can answer…

@jv: You ever used a drill mate 🤣

                      I use this one…

                      • @jv: What's the OzB equivalent of a logie, I'm nominating this for best exchange of 2020.

PS. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think DannyBoy might be asking if the 2 speeds are selected by trigger pressure rather than a switch. But the word variable got a good run in there!

                          • @jv: Kudos. I don't think he's even done that!

I have one of these. Trigger is just off or on. I bought this because it's the only one I could find at the time that had a higher speed. 600RPM is great with long screws and still has decent torque. I paid $49. I wouldn't get one at the regular price.

      • Easy thanks for your input

  • Not sure what the target market is for this product - in most situations you'd either reach for a screwdriver or an impact driver?

    • -1

This is the reason I didn't purchase this at my Bunnings for $12 a week ago.

Great for putting together flat pack furniture with a lot of screws. Impact driver can be too powerful sometimes.

      • +1

Don't press the trigger fully? Use a small drill with adjustable torque.
My experience with this type of hand-held screw driver is that they are often to weak or don't have enough flexibility in terms of adjustment and end up shearing screw/drive tip. Mine only gets used for the odd job around the house where I need to quickly for a couple of screws, If I'm doing more than 4-5 screws I'll get the drill out.

      • +1

Yes and much lighter and smaller than a drill/driver.

    • I tend to think this is for people who never want to invest into a drill driver for some reason and starting to get sick of hand tightening all those flat pack furnitures.

It's also much smaller to put away compare to a drill driver, you have have to worry about it crushing anything when dump it in a draw.

  • Link doesnt work and a manual search shows it still at $69

I have a whole arsenal of cordless drills, but when it comes to assembling IKEA furniture, this is my go-to tool of choice. The slow rpm and lightweightness mimics my hand…

In my opinion, this tool is only good for assembling furniture.

    • +1

And I think you have the right idea, it's not meant to be a replacement for drill driver or its superior cousins.

And I think it's a good specs and price compare to other similar offerings, like Bosch IXO

    • This is an important note.

I have the Bosch IXO and have bought them for my family.
Putting together flat-pack or tightening furniture screws is what this does really well due to the portability.

  • I have one of these, they are brilliant for flat pack furniture, they are light, small and can easily fit into hard to reach areas without over screwing.

I use mine more than my 18v Stanleys.

  • for the same price, is this a good deal? unsure about shipping though

    • Sorry I don’t have answer to that.

All I know is, Bosch GO is the industrial standard for portable electrical screwdriver. Everything else are toy-like and expected to have similar performance.
