I did the same thing last week because I was paying $300 easy for a dental check up /clean. Figured it will be cheaper if I take out private extras only so I can do two free dental check ups yearly, plus use dental allowance and $200 for optical. Plus ambulance cover in VIC.

I signed up on the last promo they had for hosptial + extras. I paid for one month and I get one free. Worker said I can drop it down to extras only before my third month payment is taken. Also hinted I can quit anytime.

I used up optical at Specsavers straight away. Didn't pay anything out of pocket. Also did a dental check up/clean. Already got my money back.

      • ha ha that's fancy!

  • Must maintain eligible cover and direct debit for 40 consecutive days after the policy start date. Gift card could take up to 8 weeks from the policy start date to arrive via SMS to the phone number provided on the Medibank policy.

Worth noting if you dig into the T&C's on this offer, the "specsavers e-gift card" is literally just a specsavers-branded EFTPOS gift card, so can be spent anywhere EFTPOS is accepted. Makes this a much better deal than if it was just a specsavers gift card. Deliberately misleading I think, to try and funnel money back to specsavers.
