Whats The Most Expensive Thing You Bought but Never Used?

Whats the most expensive thing you bought and never used ie still brand new condition
(eg cant be an investment/decoration/backup or a gift to someone that hasnt been given)

for me it was a surface laptop discontinuation sale $1000 new
sat in my draw for 1 year still in the box as I already had a laptop that was 3 months old, but always wanted a surface badly

Subconsciously I'm hoping my laptop breaks or have a need to give it to someone

    • @whitelie Long-shot of a question, but would you consider selling your G920 to me? PM me if you like. Thanks :)

      • As much as I don't use it, I still don't want to part with it lol
Just hang out for a good deal, they've been sub $300 pretty regularly, maybe boxing day sale?

    • Hah, I still have mine in a sealed box for when Forza 7 came out, probably the same time as your one. With a shifter which I did open to look at.

$1100 Sony HMZ-T3W head mount display. Basically a non-VR display. I bought it before OLED pc displays were buyable, now it sits in storage never to be used. It sat in storage in a hot place and now the paint has bubbled and now it’s worth less than market value. At the time it displayed 720p resolution OLED with next to nothing screen-door effects that VR headsets have.

My university degree… Well I need postgrad for one and the other one was more because my family wanted me to do it.

Outside of that I at least open it up and have fun with them at least once.
Maybe some of the fountain pens I "collected" because it looked unused and I already had one?
I was going to give them away to my friend as a present, but COVID happened and it stopped me from travelling back to my home country.
So not that expensive, in the price range that could pass off as a birthday gift for a friend easily.

A Paul Smith tuxedo. Didn’t have anywhere fancy enough to wear it. And I’m now too fat to fit into it.

But it was a good bargain. Reduced from $1500 to $450.

    • +4

      😂

You can still lose weight and wear it when you WFH instead of staying in your PJs all day?

    • 450 is a crazy good price. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get it from?

      • +2

        Christensen Copenhagen
        It’s a ladies tuxedo :)

  • +17

A treadmill. Seemed like a good idea to get fit and it was on special. It makes a good clothes hanger.

    • +7

I see your treadmill and raise you a rowing machine!

      • +5

I see both your treadmill and rowing machine and raise you an 'all in one home gym setup'!

    • +3

Should have sold it during covid. They were like gold!
We sold ours about 3-4months before and was spewing. Still got a good price for it compared to what we paid but definitely prefer to leave the house to train, can't find the motivation to do it at home.

      • +1

I gave away an upright freezer the week before covid XD

    Bitcoins
    MBA degree

    • Bitcoins aren't supposed to be used. It's the only currency that must never be spent. Just hold and it keeps going up in value.

      • That's why its price is going up. None of it is circulating and in supply! ;)

Electric Bug catcher. After a few years finally plugged it in and it didn't work

  • +4

a juicer. I think it was about $400, because it crushes the juice out without heating the fruit and destroying the nutrients.
Then I came here and learned that juice is as bad as soft drink, and never used it again.

Oh, and when masters was closing down I bought some steel cap boots that don't fit, but I thought I could give to someone else, and an electric mouse trap that doesn't have the cover to hold batteries which I thought I'd invent a solution but haven't.

And about $600 indemnity insurance when I did 1 job as a private enterprise, then took a full time job.

Thank god I recover all my loses on ozbargain.

    • +1

      Consider selling to me!
Don't know how to go about exchanging details though.

      • +1

DId you get a warning for trying to coerce me to sell on ozbargain? I did for less! :)

It's really heavy, so I wouldn't be posting it.

Dear moderator, I absolutely refuse to sell this item. No need for strike 2.

    • +2

Thank god I recover all my loses on ozbargain.

Tell me more about this. I'd also like to recover losses this way? I just seem to waste time on forums and money on shit I don't need.

      • +2

It takes a bit of justifying, but you add up the saving from RRP on everythjing you buy, and make sure that outweighs all the money you waste on stuff you never use.

You might have to do a udemy course or 2 if you're too far behind.

    • +1

Yep, cold press juicer, used 3 times then the person who it was bought for was all "oh its so hard and time consuming to clean" so its never been used since.
I cleaned it before storage just to make sure it wouldnt be packed up dirty.

    • If you use it crush beetroots then it is OK. Beetroot is sweet but it also has some other properties which makes it useful for pushbike racers.

I bought one because I had high blood pressure.

The beet juice group was able to cycle an average of 16 percent longer. The men also had lower resting blood pressure after consuming the beet juice compared to the currant juice.

      is it a Juicero?

    • Homemade juice with heavy pulp is certainly better than softdrink

Spent $1374 on 2 return tickets to Japan on Virgin.

Spent $90k on my bachelor of IT which probably never gonna use.

    • +1

      how is it 90k?

        3x30k?

Shoulda invested in a maths degree

Better is VET courses than other degrees

        • Yeah I spent $15k on my diploma and am now earning 80K PA (Adelaide Wage).

    An investment property. $450k

  • A pair of hearing aides on me $1,500.00. Have been kept in drawer ages though hearing is still going down.

    • +1

Use them mate, persist. Over time, neural plasticity will help you become accustomed to them.

How many times did you have a session with an audiologist?

      • +1

Don't listen to him tiger. They told me I'd get used to bifocal transition glasses too.

I'm not serious btw, I've never heard of hearing aides not working, whereas everyone knows you never get used to bifocal lenses.

Another ~$400 for me there too :( "Don't wait for a sale - your sight is too important"

        • I faced the same issue with my progressive/Transition glass. I bought it when I was overseas with HCF prescription. Its around $600-$800 Australian cost. I kept it in the drawer for almost 6 months as I found I couldn't adjust myself with it after wearing 1-2 days. I consulted the HCF optometrist and she told me it takes 4-6 weeks or sometimes more, to get used to it. I persisted and have been using it for the last 1.5 years.

I am so happy that I didn't give up. Else I would have to use 2 glasses and/or extend my had further to read anything.

          Just sharing my experience.

  • +4

Bought 3d printer.. still in a box. brand new. havent open it up yet :(

    • +4

I opened mine up, had some issues and then the company that made it went bust ….

      • Open it up and design things for around your house that annoy you. As soon as you do your first fix, you'll have a blast fixing problems.

  • +2

Spent $150,000 on my license. Currently not being used. Oh well.

    • what license?

      • +4

        Pilot

      • +8

        License to kill.

    • +1

Ouch. How come you never used it? Recent graduate during COVID?

      • not during. The day it started in November lulz.

        • oh boy, that's so unlucky.

Breville Pizzaolo $1200. Used it for 3 days i had about 50 pizzas then gave it away because too much pizza.

im currently looking at buying a air fryer, but am worried I'll be posting in here in 6 months time:)

    • 299 Philips XL?

      • thinking of going sub $100 in case its only used once, plus im not cooking for 15 family members!

        • +1

Bite the bullet with a $50 one! Changed my life!

          • +2

@hymio: No one regrets their air fryer!

            • @StalkingIbis: So true! I loved my first airfryer so much I bought a second one a few months after "just in case". First one's still going strong after 6+ years of frequent use, despite a slightly broken handle! I took the second one out this year to use for a few months so it's basically still new/unused. No regrets on either airfryer though!

            • +2

@StalkingIbis: Isn't it just a mini convection oven?

              • +2

@stephendt: It's an awkwardly shaped plastic convection oven. However, it heats up very quickly, cooks very quickly, and is more energy efficient than a regular oven.

                • @unelectric: ^^^^

The air circulation is wild too. I tried cooking taco shells in it and it blew them around!

    • Just buy cheap from Kmart. If you don't use it, just donate it. I have been using my Kmart air fryer for a good 2 years now. It does the job.

    • +2

I use mine all the time, even though I was allowed buy it, so not allowed keep it in kitchen. I have to rebox it after every use. Worth it.

    • Its one of the most useful things, definitely more versatile than something like a toaster. Great for reheating KFC, chips, etc. Can cook certain meals too.

    • oh. Thats the most used item at my home. Get it.

    • Air fryers are amazing. I used one for 5 years, recently upgraded the small one we had. I use it all the time

    • Jus remember, an air fryer is just a very small oven.

Built a new house 12 years ago and added a room so I could fit a pool table in. Pool table cost $4,500 along with custom light hood, cues, racks, the whole lot. I wanted to play pool with my dad who passed away before we ever got to. Table sat there covered for nearly 10 years unplayed until I sold it a few years ago and turned the space into a home office.

    • +18

thats a really sad unused purchase :(

    • +3

Sorry to hear that (after having a huge row with my dad the other day…. Both too stubborn to say sorry and currently on non speaking terms)

      • +3

I know this is OzB where we post bargains and pass clever comments. But I'll take a deflection and say this….don't leave it too late to make amends, and there is no ego between family, especially with parents.

        • +1

Thanks - I think OzB is more a community which generally helps each other.
My wife said the same thing… my son loves his dada more than me so I'm losing but this stupid thing between my eyes called pride. I understand but will give it a few more days before I action as it was mostly my fault.
          PS. we live together

      • -1

Sometime you don't need to say sorry with family.

You can just keep visiting as you were before.

        Especially if grandkids are involved.

  • +2

Bought 3ds xl special edition, xbox one special edition, ps4 special edition, all didn't open the boxes for nearly a year then sold it online at a profit.

  • +3

    Uni degree. Useless.

    • What did you study? Is it useless because you prefer another profession or because you get spoon fed in industry anyway?

      • +3

        Commerce.

I run my own business now, I own the spoon and feed myself ;)

University is big business, highly inefficient and students pay through the nose with their time and money, especially international students.

I was a local student myself, practically speaking it was a useless degree but 'helped' me get a grad job only because you needed a degree to even be considered…in the job itself the degree wasn't worth the paper it was written on.

My steam collection. I've got around $1000 worth of games and so many of them have never even been started. I'm a sucker for deals and have bought so many games on sale with the intention of playing them but never have. So many of them have /played 1-3 hours and that's it.

    • +3

I'm sure half of OZB can relate to this one!

    • +1

I used to do that (a little bit) until Epic. Now I won't pay 1c for a game, coz I'm never going to play my every growing collection of free games.

  • +15

$7000 on an Alaskan cruise. Was due to depart May. Waited 120 days for the refund and STA travel went into liquidation the day before I was due to be refunded.
Also $1700 worth of accom in Amsterdam to be used by May 2021 or forfeited.

    • Damn that really sucks.

    • o man that's gotta hurt

o wait, you just made me remember another one of mine. $50K worth of Virgin bonds in SMSF just before Covid.

I had blocked out may of these disasters. This thread should be closed before someone hurts themself.

edit: sorry, shouldn't have added that. That's not something I didn't use. I should get something back on them.

    • Have you explored your options under travel insurance? I work in the travel insurance industry and I'm curious about this for you because under certain conditions, the underwriter would be paying or at the very least, and I get this is little consolation, you should get your insurance premium refunded in full.

      • Yep , insurance premium refund. Total of $134 because we use the insurance that comes with a Combank card and paid the extra $134 for Cruise insurance.

  • +3

Annual gym membership. Gee that sucks

  • +1

I wasn't personally involved in the purchase, but I've witnessed the company I work for make a 7 figure purchase for new machinery, struggle to commission said machinery and eventually mothball it without ever being used.

  • Paid $4000 for wisdom teeth removal at a hospital

    • +1

I paid $40 at the student dental hospital. I wish I paid $4000 at a real place though.

      • What happened?

        • +1

I guess they removed the wrong tooth. I hope not.

        • +7

They struggled to remove them, ended up with one sitting on my chest yanking, while two others held me down. There was a lot of blood. I was told anything but local anesthetics were not covered by my $40, was also told that I'm a little resistant to local anesthetics. If these students were mobsters trying to extort $4000 out of me, I'd have just paid it.

    • You never used them? I'm sure you must have bitten on them occasionally

  • +24

    Life insurance.

    • +5

      Well played

  • Lego. Always Lego…

  • +3

$400 on some Sony MX3, I had HEAPS of international travel planned with work, but that got all put into the bin with COVID.

Backup was using them in my open office setup which gets stupid noisy…. Ended up working from home for over 8 months now.

I used them once at the gym though

    • They will still be working when you need them tho

  • Bugatti chiron Lego. Thought it was going out of stock mid year but turns out it wasn't :)

  • Ralph Lauren Jacket $399 was $799

  • Sony Playstation VR kit when it was around 699. Played it a handful of times although I have little kids and cables are a big worry as could be ripped out of PS4 pro or VR headset

    • +2

I got it at 300 and knowing it'll work with the PS5 is nice. My two complaints with PSVR is the low resolution, which PS5 won't help with other than expanding field of view for games that limit it. And the other is frame rate, which PS5 will help with.

  • MCC membership for 20+ years. Never used it once.
