You will automatically receive an extra 40GB for $10, up to five times within a monthly billing period (i.e. a total of 200GB for $50). If you use more than 200GB of top-up data, we will slow your speed to 1.5Mbps until the next billing period."

The Optus 5G Modem is quite nice and can be had for $75-$90 Unlimited. Pity it can't be configured in Bridge Mode as they've blocked those settings in the firmware.

  • 2 years ago they gave me a Samsung tab and a Bose headphones which I later sold on Gumtree for $850.
Still waiting for something similar to that one, not the modem

  • Good price for the 500gb offer, but the Optus 4G+ slow speeds are terrible. There are MVNO that offer better deals than this surely? When I got this offer with them 6 months ago, it was 12/1 where I am - nothing higher.

Tangerine offer 1TB for $89/month (no contract, no specific modem requirements/spectrums used) and that's what I am using at the moment at approximately 40/10 speeds most of the time (I am in a rural location and need a 16db antenna to get 2 bars on a device).

Nope, the MNVO deals are more expensive.
and Optus 4G speed has been passable in my experience. Consistently had 30/8 speeds on speedtest.net in peak hours. Up to 100/8 off peak.
Tangerine are reselling Optus… not sure how you think their performance could be any better?

  • If you wanted 500GB internet, wouldn't it be better to go with the 500GB Optus One plan? That is cheaper at $65/month and not locked into a contract. Once 5G is in your area, you can move to the 5G Home internet plan, which is 75/month, but unlimited, unless you live in Byron Bay.

    • This is true but you can't use this in a modem, only on mobile phone and you can tether thru it.

      • You could get a second hand 4G modem off gumtree to put the sim card in. If not, there are several other options, but may require some technical know how to get it done.

        1. Asus wifi routers with usb ports support Android USB tethering, so you can connect an old Android phone to it and use it as a modem.
        2. If you have a usb 4G dongle handy and a wifi router that supports it, you could use it as a 4G backup.Very small chance of this though.
        3. Old computer using the Android USB tethering method.
        4. Use an old phone in Wifi hotspot mode. If you have a largish home, you use a wifi repeater to boost the signal. Not recommended due to old phones not being able to handle a lot of connections to the wifi hotspot.
        • b818 is a standalone cat19 modem.
so you're looking at a phone Samsung Galaxy S9 gen and newer.

4g dongles are terrible for speed.

          • @dasher86: I understand your point. In a perfect world, we would be able to make full use of cat19, however, my feeling is that most people can expect maybe 70-80mbps on average on Optus 4G, nowhere near cat19 speeds.

            • @geek001: 70mbps is around the theoretical max capability of most USB dongle 4G modems.
That's assuming optimal signal conditions which are unlikely unless you live next to a tower.
A secondhand 4G modem will pick up stronger signal and give you far better throughput in almost every scenario.

Similarly most phones will have better theoretical capabilities and can be more easily placed in an optimal signal location.

              • @ESEMCE: Ok good to know. I was planning to do the USB tethering method anyway, since I have a few old Android phones lying around. Also users have reported problems putting the sim in a non-phone device. I haven't verified this myself. I tested using my current sim and a Samsung Galaxy Note 5 tethered to a OpenWRT box, I can get about 70mbps on it, however, once it hits my powerline adapter, the speed is reduced to about 20mbps. Might have to invest in a wifi repeater instead or something. Lol.

              • @ESEMCE: I frequently see speeds up to 140/40 via 4G from without in our house. It's just a massive shame there aren't any easy static IP solutions to such a setup. I'm onto my fourth attempt… small Netgear 4G modem arriving tomorrow. Promises to get everything working the way I need but I'll believe it when I see it.

                • @SteveAndBelle: Quite believable with a B818 or even the 800S, but I'd be incredibly surprised if it were a USB stick modem.

Optus don't offer Static IP, it's not a modem problem, it's a network limitation. (I'm not even sure that any 4G service in Australia offers Static IP)

                  • +1

@ESEMCE: Yeah, you can get Static IP through a 4G business plan and then days of following up to ensure the techs have activated various special options. I was actually just reading about it yesterday and found a thread on it… I think it was the Optus support forum.

How do you get this Optus One deal for $65?
      Shows as $119/month to me.

      Edit Found it through Whistleout
      https://www.optus.com.au/mobile/plans/shop?planId=34411764&d…

      • It is still up for me, it is under mobile sim plans. Are you looking at the plans with phones? I think the Optus One is only for sim only plans for a few weeks now.

      • +1

I do not have much experience on Vodafone services or network but I find this Vodafone deal competes with Optus One fiercely. Vodafone 500GB $65 Super+ Sim Only Month to Month ($10 Discount PM for 12 Months). Plan will be $55pm for 12mths then $65 after.

        • In my location Vodafail is better oparse. When I signed up the $10 discount for the life of plan till I terminate it. I also got the G8 for $1 per month for 24 months.
I brought a B818 second hand and using the sim in that

        • FYI, this vodafone deal has expired BTW.

  • no voip calls

  • $218 is not a bad price for the modem, normally retailing anywhere from $198 (used) to $398 (new); order and cancel the month by month contract to save some coin
pair with the JB 150gb deal

I am using this plan($68 500gb). Work very well in my area(Sydney south). Got about 50mbps download and 4mbps upload. Some time it will jump up to 90 mbps or drop down to 20mbps.

  • I got 20% off the 4G plan last year. The sales people can sometimes offer lower prices if you ask, particularly if you have another Optus product. I usually get ~60/8Mbps, 20ms ping even during peak. Things get a bit inconsistent during heavy rain. Pay out the modem cost at any time if you want to cancel the contract. No 5G in my area yet. I can't justify to pay NBN the $300 new development fee as much as I would like to have 5ms ping. If NBN would waive this fee so they can start recovering the cost of sending teams of >4ppl twice to pull a cable they could start getting their money back faster.

  • Does anyone know if the SIM associated with these sorts of services is locked to a location? Could it be used in multiple locations?

    • +2

No location lock. I don't believe they even lock the SIM to the modem anymore.

    • it wont work in a phone just for data, my experience, this service was great until it went down on oak park vic, took ten days to bring it back, i had to move to telstra as was working from home

  • Avoid Optus like the plague.

  • im still on 67.50/month (NBN 50) unlimited deal. should i switch to this order just wait?

  • I was happily using fast internet ADSL with Telstra few years. Then NBN stuffs the connection with all the outage. used Optus Mobile Broadband with B818. Speed is bad and varies at my location. Tried with external antenna, Also Optus intentionally rip you off $10 per 10 Gb top off without the option to endless data (with lower speed) once monthly data quota is exhausted,

Bought a Vodafone Sim (Om special, so to avoid auto add on) in the B818. 20Gb speed. That proves to me Optus speed is sux, I do enjoy Mobile Broadband especially taking it to travel,
