With Qantas recently offering fast track of status for Virgin flyers and extension of status by 12 months for booking a flight, Virgin had to respond and has done so today, with among other deals, a first - Companion Gold!

  • Virgins response to lots of their members already flocking to Qantas.

    • +2

Sorry, I might have missed that.. what was Virgin’s response?

Any deals for those who remained Loyal?

Or is only those who have fled to Qantas?

      From the description

Not one to be outdone by a competitor, Velocity Frequent Flyer will offer eligible Gold and Platinum members a status extension of up to one (1) year or until 31 March 2022, as long as they take one (1) eligible flight with Virgin Australia before 28 March 2021.

Yes did you see the status extension and points bonus?

    • +1

      Yes there is:
      https://experience.velocityfrequentflyer.com/member-support/…

      • One flight renews your status till 31/03/2022
      • Two flights get you 5000 bonus points
      • Three gets complimentary Economy X upgrades for Gold or Business upgrades for Platinum
      • One flight renews your status till 31/03/2022

I thought the status will automatically be extended by a year due to pandemic, or is that not the case anymore?

        • Yes. So the extension is now an extra few months on-top (including Christmas after next).

Qantas Frequent Flyer Gold status and above members

This is a bit confusing. Virgin Australia are rewarding loyal Qantas customers? Or have these airlines been merged?

    • +3

It's status matching / beating to entice you to use a different airline instead of using your existing frequent flyer program. So yes, they are rewarding loyal Qantas customers.

    • +2

If you put it that way, it's in response to Qantas rewarding loyal Virgin (and other airline) customers.

      • Surprised I got negged for asking a question. Links to the Qantas promotions were not there when I originally posted. Thank you for actually answering me.

        • What is so confusing for you about it? Looks very clear to me just by looking at the Virgin page link.
There are generous offers for existing loyal Virgin Gold and Platinum customers and another offer for loyal Qantas customers who might want to consider trying another airline. (Qantas is also running a similar promotion but this one offers more, ie. double (2 X) Gold memberships).
Great to have competition back, no matter your preferred airline.

What is so confusing for you about it?

The fact that a Velocity deal referenced Qantas loyal customers.

loyal Qantas customers who might want to consider trying another airline.

To me, loyal would suggest someone who might not want to consider trying another airline.

Looks very clear to me just by looking at the Virgin page link.

I don't fly much normally, let alone during COVID, so haven't followed the tussle over frequent flyer points.
Thank you for the further details.

            • +1

@S2: For airlines, loyalty = frequent flyer status. If you don't fly much this won't be of any use to you ;)

I may have misread it, but I think the 6th dot point needs amending. In addition to taking one eligible flight in your 3 month gold trial period, you also need to accrue 80 status points.

[to earn full 12 month gold status] Earn 80 Status Credits and fly at least one eligible sector during your Discover Gold Status trial. We’ll assess your eligibility at the end of your 3 month Discover Gold trial, and if you’re eligible, we’ll notify you and you’ll receive 12 months of full Gold status.

    • +4

Yea, that caveat makes this quite useless.

A Melbourne to Sydney flight nets you 10 status points only.

      • With Qantas, you need to earn 100 status points and spend more money to earn them, and only get 1 Gold membership (this offers 2)
No airline is going to hand out Gold for doing nothing, running lounges is an expensive part of their business, so you need to be genuinely spending money with them or Qantas to hold onto this.
If a person can't earn 80 status points in 3 months, they wouldn't be holding onto their membership for long anyway, because you need 500 status points a year under normal circumstances to get Gold (500 in the first year / 400 for subsequent years)

        • +1

Incorrect, Qantas will extend your gold with only 1 flight for a year.

      • +1

Depends on the class of ticket you're getting. Such as Getaway (the cheapest tickets) with the lowest status.
Also remember if you are travelling with a family member, you can pool their status points to you, meaning you get double status points, something you cannot do on Qantas.
So if you booked a return flight, Melb<>Gold Cost at $175 PP each way, on an Elevate fare with family pooling, there are your 80 points.

  • It's not really clear though whether the 3x flights for Economy X/Business upgrades lasts for the entire duration of status or whether it's just for a few months

    • +1

The Econ x upgrades apply to the end of March 2021.

  • Nice. I ended up with Gold in July by accident due to enough Status Credits earned at Coles to push me up from Silver.

Thought I'd barely get to use it. Especially on SQ - now I'm a chance.

    • Don't think Virgin and Singapore still has reciprocal benefit atm. I may be wrong.

  • Bummer that I’m flying them on Wednesday (min 7 days until it kicks in) and last flight for the year, but have applied to start 28 December.

  • I think I'm blind but where is the EOI form?

  • The good news today, been worried about my status since locked down…

  • With the 12 month gold / plat extension if you fly before 28/3/21, this appears to make sure you actually fly to be eligible. Qantas simply allows you to make a booking (either using cash or classic rewards) and simply not cancel the booking, and you'd be eligible. It would be nice if Virgin did this - as they just want the cash…

    • Looks like the Bain undercutting has started (this and someone said 80 status credits are required which I didn't see).

  • +1

Don't forget, Velocity Gold gives you extra perks to Hilton Gold or IHG Gold as well ;)

Pretty good perk to have !

    • Yeah, I have Hertz Gold via Virgin, which can be handy for car upgrades :)

  • Anyone know if the 4 free business upgrades for Platinum will extend along with the status extension?

    • Doesnt seem like it

  • Ever since Virgin acquired 100% of Velocity..there has been ZERO service for Velocity platinum, if you have a problem! I know, from 1st hand experience.

    • See what happens in over the next month or two now that Bain Capital have finally taken over. They only took control of it little over 2 weeks ago. Lot's of changes coming, no doubt.

  • Anyone know how long it takes for the gold status to be awarded for Qantas FFs after applying? Thanks

  • Did anyone else get rejected for no reason?
