    Just be aware that this is stuck on Android 8.1 Oreo, which it was launched with and won't be updated.

    This phone was released over 2 years ago and TCL, who had the rights to BlackBerry Mobile branding ended their partnership as of August this year.

    At this late stage it's probably not a good value buy, previous deals at the start of the year were also the same price or cheaper

        Yeah I got the September update on my KEY2 but not really expecting anymore, maybe I'll be surprised. I've unwillingly stopped using it as my main phone now anyway, with the older OS and deteriorating battery & performance after 2+ years of use.

      I think that's more related to the old Blackberry OS phones from years ago, that used their own data (Blackberry Internet Service or BIS), rather than going through the carriers. You could still buy the phone through a carrier but the APN would actually put to BlackBerry rather than Telstra, Optus etc. It was deemed more secure and encrypted.

      Not really relevant with these phones, it's just an Android phone with extra security on the OS and a focus on security via some specialised apps etc.

        Oh interesting. So the drug dealer old school ones still run on Telstra etc or their own network? I read in the SMH each old school encrypted blackberry costs $2000/month to run and uses ‘pins’

          not each phone but I think if you had a corporate bb server it cost a bit, maybe 2k a month. I had a couple of blackberries in the day (work, not drug related) and they crapped over every other phone out there, maybe 15 years ago. BB messenger was fast and reliable, worldwide, in an era when WAP's were non existent and global networks spotty. Global roaming could easily cost you $1k a month in data and calls, so the BB network was actually cheaper if you had a few people on the road. But today you are better off with something like an iphone for work as you can hook into a wap at a starbucks/mcD, hotel etc, vpn and be secure.

          I see no value now unless you like the keyboard, which used to be great.

      I think you're referring to Blackphone which Silent Circle stopped supporting and the developers moved to just making apps for iOS/Android which offer similar security features… or so they say.

          Comes down to not trusting anyone I suppose. I know a few people who used the Blackphone for business as they operated in an environment where they just couldn't trust anyone.

      This is a generic guide and will 100% not work on a Blackberry Android device, ever. Bootloader is locked for a start.

    Some of my friends still swear by BlackBerry. I guess the physical keyboard is just really that convenient, but is it worth spending 400 for a mediocre phone?

      Depends what you do on it.

      I message, call, surf the web, watch youtube, and play music.

      For those tasks, all the responses are literally instantaneous.

      It depends on your use scenario if the mediocre specs will equal mediocre performance.

      For me, "instant" is as fast as it can get; so newer specs wont help me :)

      Nope. I don't even think BB keyboards are that great (I used a 9900 on BES for a while). I actually thought my previous Nokia E71 had a better keyboard.

        I agree; but the current ones. Are somewhere between classic BB and nokia keyboards.

        Also, the keyboards are capacitive trackpads too, which is cool.

          Not sure why but those capacitive trackpads don't seem to work well with my thumbs… my car has them on the steering wheel and it frustrates me greatly using them.

            @jace88: I use it to swype type, swipe corrections, and scroll articles without my fingers being in the way of the screen content.

            May not be a lot for some, but i like it.

            @FutureTech: It's also hard to do without looking at it, and without autocorrect.

            Since I work a technical trade, a lot of my words aren't dictionary words, they're certs or abbreviations; so auto correct needs to be off; and often I'll need to type a note while looking at something else, or reading a panel.

            All things you just fail at on a touch screen phone, for sure.

    Was $336 in March. Used to be a crack berry. If bb releases a new phone at a competitive price I will buy one. But bb usually doubles the price as cracker tax.

    Used to own a Priv for the keyboard (and happened to have a great camera/lens with great close focus too) but their implementation was nowhere near as good as the landscape keyboard layout by Motorola in years gone like the Droid 3.
