Sony XAV-AX5000 Apple Carplay & Android Auto Double DIN Head Unit $449 (Was $749) @ Supercheap Auto

1200

Pretty good deal IMO. I think it directly competes with the Pioneer DMH-Z5350BT and Kenwood DMX5020S. I think all 3 of the head units have capacitive displays with the Pioneer being LED. However the Sony does have 10w more sound output compared with the others and also physical buttons.

Would like to hear anyone's thoughts between the Pioneer, kenwood and Sony.

EDIT:
Some users have complained that they've had Android Auto connectivity issues with the Sony. For $50 more the Pioneer DMH-Z5350BT seems to be a better buy IMO.

THE CHOICE IS YOURS!

What Toyota do you have? Why do you need a $230 digital amp interface and $290 steering control adapter?

      • A Gen 2 Prius, there was a period of time Toyota uses JBL digital amp for their "premium" audio option. We didn't specially ask for premium audio upgrade, just that trim level comes with it.

It takes more than a wiring harness to convert analogue signal to digital, which is where this $230 gadget comes in: https://aerpro.com/tyto-01

Alternative is to bypass the amp (probably will not sound as good), or get an aftermarket amp (extra cost), either way requires re-wiring of speakers and there are quite a few of them.

"Steering control" I meant steering wheel control (SWC), the audio/phone control buttons, not a must but they are there. It doesn't feel right to spend hundreds of dollars for an upgrade only to stop something from work. So even though SWC integration is optional but it's kind of a must.

Ah I see (nice car BTW). If you wanted to upgrade your system you should go the whole way and bypass the factory amp so you don't have to buy that converter and install new speakers as your existing ones are a 3 ohm design that won't work with aftermarket receivers. You would then run your new speakers directly from the amp in your new receiver. If you do this, you should have a look at a Kenwood receiver like the DMX8020S, they have a direct OEM SWC system with an included harness, meaning you don't have to buy that SWC converter:

I've got one installed in my Gen 3 Prius, works perfectly. This option would come out to about $1200, but instead of wasting money on converters, you get new, better speakers instead.

@Dogsrule: Thanks for the SWC information, great to know Kenwood has took an extra step to make it easy. Was only looking at Sony and Pioneer units. Now Kenwood is very likely.

  • What happens to car warranty after fitting those ? (Assuming that it’s done by a certified peofessional not DIY)

  • This POS has issues with sound randomly not outputting, have to turn the car off and on again or factory reset the unit to bring it back.

Happens more if you have a phone paired over blutooth, i think it causes a glitch and doesn't know where to output sound from (if connected to car play via USB as well).

Numeous posts about this online, Sony support provide no assistance or solution. Garbage wish i didn't buy it.

    • Are you running the latest firmware 1.04?
If you fitted the unit yourself and bought from Supercheap, take the unit back for a replacement or get something else?

      • Yes updated to the latest firmware.

        Tempted to take it back.
