What's Your Guilty Purchase for 2020?

So, 2020 has been a crazy year. Mask wearing, social distancing, wallets tightening, lock downing. What has your guilty purchase been for this year? Any regrets?

For me I bought myself and my kids a second hand Nintendo 3DS each and I've been going nuts modding them and playing all sorts of games that I totally missed out on (my last handheld was in the GBA era). It's been lots of fun - no regrets.

What about everyone?

          • @cuteseal: Public Service Announcement: my friend was on holidays and got the squirts. He's a big bloke and thought it would be wise to take double the recommended dosage. Poor guy was blocked up for nearly a week which was worse than the original problem.

    • So it was you!

Finally bought a boat after 2 years of searching, looking, dreaming and balancing budget. Really shouldn't have from a sensible point of view and realising how much effort and how expensive it is to keep running, but enjoying it immensely. Or so I keep telling myself…

The best two days of boat ownership.

          User name indicates boat owner

    • Totally understand… I think even better now overseas holidays are on the back burner.

    • +18

I hear it's way better to have a friend who owns a boat than to own a boat yourself.

      • +5

There is a saying that owning a yacht is like standing under a cold shower and tearing up 100 dollar bills.

      • +2

That's why there's the saying " best boat is your mates boat".

    • +2

      Boats are the best.

Our greatest family memories and family time has all been on a boat.

      • +7

        Awesome! Whatever floats your boat!

I'm the king of the world on a boat like Leo if you are on the shore then you're sure aren't me o

      • Can we have a drawing of that please?

    • What did you get?

      • Just a little Bayliner bowrider on trailer for FJ to pull around. 4.3L 220 HP stern drive and pretty clean condition.

        • +3

Nice, the V6 is so much nicer the the 3.0. Hopefully it gives you a lot of good memories.

        • I also bought a boat this year. Love it. 18ft searay bowrider. It has the 3.0l in it not the V6 but I get 72km with a couple of people on board and is crazy fuel efficient. Wouldn't swap for the V6 but not into watersports.

Its also appreciated in value about 7k since I bought it in winter and hasn't cost me a cent in maintenance.

          • +2

@FreddyMerc: Sounds lovely. Make sure you flush it after each use and hope it serves you well for plenty of enjoyable cruises.

    • Congrats! Have fun!

    • A friend of mine who used to be big time into boats told me that owning a boat is like standing in a shower dropping $50 notes down the drain!

Seriously though, enjoy it - it's your money and you can't take it with you.

i'm guilty of being scammed on gumtree of $160 trying to buy a used PC. I don't know what I was thinking, and it's a severe lack of judgement and caution that I would normally excerise. oh well…

    • Sorry to hear that! That sucks! Especially when it's harder to meet up in person due to restrictions!

      • +5

yeah it was the covid contactless payment that got me :(

    • Oh man that sucks. Some people are just horrible.

    • Lol I got one and sold it (for a nice profit) the day I received it. To be honest I was looking forward to playing it, but after actually getting it the feeling has subsided a lot, mostly because of all the issues and the lack of launch titles.

When I saw how much people were selling them for.. Heavy consideration came into play.

    Ooni pizza oven

    • Do you like it?

      • Koda 16, not here yet…

        • Very nice, was thinking about one myself next year, just curious on whether 13 will be enough as those 16s are getting up there in price.

          • @biga1: Yeah, wasn't exactly happy about the price premium (over the regular local prices or the koda 16 us prices) but from reviews it looks like a more versatile and better cooking option.

Saved some $ getting accessories like pizza peel from AliExpress to offset the hurts

            • @SBOB: Where'd you get it from? Seen them listed on Catch every now and then, would be able to get a decent price with some discounted gift cards.

              • +1

@Cheaplikethebird: Pizza Oven Store in Sydney.

Theres only one importer for Australia and a bunch of shops that they supply.

    • Brother in-law has one and it's the bomb. The texture of the crust is amazing! Enjoy!

    • I'm big-time into cooking but knew nothing of these pizza ovens, so I had a look at their website. They look great but everything sold out.

      Damned Covid!

    Puppy $4k + Roborock S5 Max $560.
The former meant the latter became necessary… any wet grass/rain outside mean dirt and visible paw prints all over the wooden floor, bedding and furniture… vacuuming almost daily and mopping 2x week = hello roborock.
No regrets for either, although the puppy means I am feeling guilty the minute I leave it alone, so its cramped my lifestyle a bit more than I expected.

    • +18

Just hope the puppy doesn't make an accident and the robo vac goes over it "paints" your entire living room brown…

      • Lol - thankfully only a few indoor accidents of the brown variety and well before I bought the robovac!

    • Both amazing purchases! Well done!

      • +16

We are congratulating someone for buying a puppy now? The bar is low.

          Not a dog person?

          • +6

            @morse: Frenchies are an abomination.

          • +10

            @morse: Adopt, don't shop.

            • @MIKEPICKARD: Good point. We adopted our now 14yo lab when he was 7. Love him! I think that’s why I was excited by someone else getting a pup.

Apparently not everyone can adopt a suitable dog due to kids and allergies etc. But yes, you’re absolutely right, important to remember, especially coming up to Christmas.

              • +1

@morse: @morse thanks for the enthusiasm!
And yeah I am all for 'adopt dont shop'. But - I have dust allergies and wanted a poodle mix to reduce risk of being allergic to it. Poodle mixes are incredibly hard to find at rescue centres, unless they have behavioral problems which I do not have experience with - our local rescue's site often says experience required for those dogs!

            • @MIKEPICKARD: Adoption is great especially for big dogs or working dogs. Many people get them and realise that their lifestyle doesn't suit the dog they have. However if you after a small family dog without behaviour issues, you better know who works at the adoption place and ask them to keep an eye out for you.

    • +2

Wait, you just let your dog in the house without cleaning it's paws?

Jeez, my dog is damn spoilt!

      • +1

Exactly what I was thinking. That gives me anxiety just thinking about the dog coming in and out willy nilly. Luckily, in Brisbane, it rains f***ing rarely.

(posted in one of those rare times that it is raining!)

        • Yeah, our place is not set up for leaving her outside till she asks to come in…. we have a dog door and she just comes and goes as she pleases - we had enough trouble keeping our black floor clean before the dog, now we've given up aside from Roborock. Its raining today, anticipating the muddy paw prints.

But next year will get a back deck with a fenced off backyard, then the rules will change….

For anyone even thinking about flooring right now - never get BLACK floors - EVER.

Bought a electronic sit stand desk. Only thing I regret is it hasn't arrived.

    • Nice one… good investment for your posture/health!

    • Which one did you get?

    • +18

I think it stood you up 😁

    • +1

had one for 5 months, had a wind up one at work but didn't really use it.

I went the zendesk electric - with height pre-sets and the anti-fatigue mat (seems like overkill, but for timber floors I reckon it's a must) it's awesome. Also got the cable management (would be a nightmare without it!).

      • Ooh, anti fatigue mat, this might be next on my list.

  • +1

I bought way too much makeup recently in the black friday deals. All at amazing prices but because they're not a 'need' i feel hella guilty. Whoops!!!!!

    • +1

Oops! I purposely disconnected from social media and ozbargain those couple of days so I wouldn't be tempted! :)

Landscaped our yard, fake grass, new retaining wall, spa. The only regret we have was choosing (it turns out) the world's most incompetent "landscaper". We could have done a better job ourselves - he stuffed up every single element, without exception. BUT we now have a sweet new backyard, and the spa is delicious. :)

    • Nice one… when's the barbie at your place?

    • Nice! I wish that was my guilty purchase

    • +4

      Don't drink the spa water!

    • Do you feel like you would use your spa regularly or would the novelty wear off after a while?
      Thinking about getting one myself

      • Well, we got ours in July, and have used it almost every day since! It's awesome in winter, sitting in the heated water while it's freezing outside (not so much fun getting out, though!) and we've lowered the temperature now, so it's almost as good as a dip in the pool on a hot day. ;) No regrets from us!

        • +1

          Great to know, cheers.
I've been trying to convince myself I need one.

  • +2

Seriously nothing. I’m already getting jealous of others purchases reading this post - I’ve still got time before Dec 31.

  • Moved interstate this year and didn’t cart any of our stuff up with us, it’s all in storage. So pretty much re-bought all my kid’s toys for Christmas this year. They’re all wanky, wooden toys so it feels a bit ridiculous spending so much on one Christmas, but really they are just getting their old things back.

Hopefully the second hand wooden toy market stays super competitive for the next few years and I should get back at least 80% of what I paid.

  • +11

My wife has been saying she needs a new MacBook as her current one keeps running out of storage. I said that's like buying a new car because old one had a full ashtray.

Then the Apple Silicon MacBooks came out with rave reviews, then the awesome 10% deals on them, and so yeah, she's now getting a new MacBook for Christmas.

    • +1

Can I have her old one?

      • +2

With or without the porn? ;)

        • Not enough storage.
However, there's stains all over the glowing logo, and a suspicious build up of "something" in the vents.

        • Depend on who's porn.

  • +1

Our TV died so we got a new one. At least we got the 55” rather than the 65”.

I figured if I was going to be stuck at home for a while I may as well do some work in the shed so bought myself an HF-start TIG. Very pleased with the purchase, much easier than my lift-start machine.
    https://swswelding.com.au/products/ac-dc-tig-welder

    • How're you finding the SWS machine? I use a Kemppi at TAFE currently and it is the Rolls Royce of TIG boxes, but for purchasing for myself, I've heard some decent things about the SWS.

      • Good. All sub-$5k TIG's are made in the same factory in China, just the front plate changes basically.

I was tossing up between the UniMIG Razor 200 and the SWS machine. A friend bought the SWS and it seemed good quality, I liked the large display and it came with stuff (pedal and consumables) that UniMIG charge $400 for. The deal-sealer was the 5 year warranty offered by SWS.

I'm in a regional area so second hand gear is hard to find, if you're near a major city I'd be searching Gumtree looking for a used AC/DC machine with all the knobs on the front (like 12-15). These have no microcontroller and are far more robust.

    • Awesome and why not treat yourself :)

  • +11

Buying 17 bottles of single malt in dan murpheys 20% off eBay sale.

I only regret that decision on Saturday and Sunday mornings. So I have it all under control.

  • Bowers and Wilkins PX7 Bluetooth ANC headphones. I got them for $150 under retail second hand then had them replaced under warranty due to minor issue with firmware. Better than Sony and Bose top range cans.
