Cooked Thawed Small Whole Australian Rock Lobster $20 Each (Was $35) @ Woolworths

2500

"Woolworths has announced a half price lobster sale in the lead-up to Christmas.

The retail giant will sell Western Australian rock lobsters for just $20 each, 50% less than they were this time last year.

The luxury seafood buy is a favourite across Australia, however high prices have meant it’s often too expensive to include in festive spreads."

You can get the tails of these for $7.50 each which can do the job just as well.

        • Are CA lobsters good?

          • +1

@capslock janitor: Someone else here reckoned those cheap imported tails didn't taste anywhere near as good. Worth trying out though to see.

    • Maybe $20 for half the lobster (?)

    • 50% less than they were this time last year, no one says it half price

You can buy fresh $49 a kilo in Springvale market too FYI

    Rock Lobster!

    Dun-dun-dun-d-d-dun-dun-dun-duuun!

Pretty standard pricing for Perth. (frozen at least)
Unfortunately i feel they're not going to keep fishing if the demand isn't there.
    It's practically a cartel.

Sailed through some of Perth's Crayfish ports and the amount of cray boats on stands or permanently moored is staggering.

Finally, Aussies suppliers charging local customers a fair price for local produce!
Used to think it was ridiculous imported barramundi could be had for $15/kg after frieght while local barramundi were being sold for $35/kg, what a rip off.

    • +13

That's what happens when Aussie suppliers create an artificial shortage locally by shipping almost everything overseas. They sell at a good volume price to China and profit further by overcharging for the low quality stock they leave for the local market. That's why I don't feel sorry for these suppliers with the current China tarriffs - they've been milking this cow for years already.

      • Lets look at the truth, chinese people are rich (at least some of them), they can afford this more than Aussie, you have to face the truth, Aussie supplier just want to make more money, nothing wrong with them

        • +2

China has 55 times the population of Australia. It might have far less rich people proportionately, but it has enough that there's a greater demand from wealthy people there than here. Could also be a cultural thing to do with status & food.

      • Yes these lobster guys 'milked the cow' but they are a commercial business who sell things for profit, and the bigger the profit the better.

I don't complain the chinese buy our things or that I can't afford $150/kg lobsters, I blame myself for not working smart enough, investing my money more intelligently so I can afford the things I want. If I can't afford a Ferrari, that is 100% my fault. If I want something so bad, I would go take action to make it happen.

    • +3

Agree with your sentiment but to be fair imported 'barramundi' is usually not the same species, or quality of fish, as local barramundi.

      • +5

That imported stuff is nasty and way lower quality than the fresh Aussie Barramundi. Different taste, low fat content.

        • +5

Yes it's rubbish, very different. Hence the push now by the Northern Territory Seafood Council and local fishers etc. to trademark it and only allow Aus barramundi (barramundi being an Aus Indigenous word/name) to be called that, similar to champagne etc.

    • +4

A lot of the imported Barra was found to be Nile perch.

    • Why are they frozen lobsters?

  • Price is already $20 on special when I click on the link.

    • but unavailable everywhere, I think the sale starts tomorrow

      • My local has stock.

  • +1

Their loss, our gain, more sustainable planet (less transportation).

    • Maybe not (in terms of transportation), they might eat something from further away such as North East Canada.

    • Not really, China is low in natural resources (note that this severely compromises their military ambitions), & has enough demand & money & trading clout to get whatever they want elsewhere.

  • +1

    Thanks op

  • +2

    151 grams?

    I wish they'd sell the uncooked/live ones…

Yes me too. At least not 'thawed' (read: previously frozen).

Time to enjoy some Lobster stuffed with Tacos.

    • +3

      That's loco

  • Isn't the advertising misleading?…. it isn't 50% off….
You can't really advertise a price from a year ago as a comparison.

  • +1

After reading the comments, I can't figure out,
whether OzB think the Woolworths' deal is good or not ?!

I never ate lobster,…so if it was a 'good deal' I would buy from Woolworths tomorrow. Ha.

However, sounds like these were the ones "rejected" by China,
so this could be returned RMA lobsters for sale!

    • +1

Might depend on whether you live in a part of Australia where it's cheaper, or you're prepared to do the legwork to go to seafood markets to find it.

      • +1

I'm in Sydney, but I don't even glance at the prawn and lobster sections, because of budgets…ha.

        • +1

Lobster/crayfish is considered probably the best seafood other than maybe moreton bay bugs. So if you've never tried it, this is a great time to give it a crack at relatively cheap prices. Ideally buy fresh from a seafood market but if you buy this thawed one from woolies it'll still be good.

        • I've certainly almost never had crayfish, I'm considering seeing if I can get a hold of some of this tomorrow just because; even if it's usually out of my budget, it's nowhere near as high as I'm used to.

          • @kiteo: If you can afford it, go for it. It's delicious. If you like other seafood you'll most likely enjoy crayfish. It's a bargain and we're helping out the local crayfish industry during a difficult time for them.

            • @sav11: Poor gazillionares..

    • +2

However, sounds like these were the ones "rejected" by China,

Nothing wrong with them. China is having a little spat because Australia won't do what it wants.

So China does what China does best and is trying to hurt trade imports from our country so we toe the line and be a good Chinese state they think we are.

As a result we have excess stock that would have normally been sent to China, that has to be sold cheaply on the local market.

The Atlantic Seafood Market (3/375-393 William St, Perth WA 6000) (08) 9328 2168 in Northbridge Perth sells live fresh lobster 450g - 500g for $20 each last Saturday! why would i buy cooked small ones from Woolies??

    • +7

      Not everyone lives in Perth

    • +2

Because you're near the Atlantic Seafood Market (3/375-393 William St, Perth WA 6000) (08) 9328 2168 in Northbridge Perth, that's why.

    • Thanks for sharing Tommy2000
You really should post that as a deal!

  • +2

Will be $20, was $35. My ext 2 maths skills tells me that's not 50% off

  • +3

China was buying 90pc of WA's lobster exports until a recently, according to some in the biz. Even this price is a little high given the domestic oversupply.

  • Isn't the one at Cole only $7 or $8 each ? Different lopster ?

    • +2

I think you're referring to the tails only, this is whole lobster. Also believe those tails are Canadian/Brazilian and apparently not as good as these local lobster/crayfish

  • lol. these were probably the live ones stuck on the airport runway in china. guess they decided to freeze them and send them back here lol.

    • poor lobsters…. they probably died in pain so the proteins must be full of sadness.

  • +3

Stock available in Taree NSW and I wish the trade dispute go longer. Thanks China for lower my cost of luxury living.

  • 干饭人

  • why is $20 a whole lobster a deal where you can buy two lobster tails for $15?

    • That reminds me of the Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Lobsters

      • You're thinking of the second part of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Two Lobsters.

    • The tails are tiny. not even half as good as king prawns.

    • where buy thos etails?

  • I would love to support our fishing industry, and was actually excited about it. But at that price for that little size, sorry.

  • sorry but i remember its used to be $19.95 each?? a few years ago???

  • Anyone have recommendations for where to get a good deal on Live Lobsters in Sydney? Whether it be a store or a fishery.

  • +4

I bet they sell this to China for less than 20 each

  • +1

    Coles will be $20 also

  • +1

How to best eat these thawed cooked lobster? Split in half and add knobs of butter and salt then grill until hot? Then use remaining lobster shell and head to make a lobster bisque?

    • +3

If you're into Chinese cuisine, you may want to consider this.
      https://www.sonatural.hk/en/chinese-style-lobster-with-noodl…

      • +3

but the woolies ones are cooked. you can't make it into Chinese lobster noodles with cooked lobster.

        • +1

You still can. Just need to cook it long enough to heat through rather than fully cook it. But I’m not sure I want to cook them asian style…

          • @MuddyClear: I woulda just ripped the shell off and eaten it as it is.
but if that's the case, i actually prefer Australian king prawns which are more tender and juicier.

so it's pretty 鸡肋 i would say.

  • +1

Has to check how heavy those lobsters are, I saw today at the seafood shop selling $30 a kilo. If it’s 500gm end up $40 a kilo.

  • +4

Nice to see lobster for Xmas….. I might actually buy one for Xmas dinner…… Thanks CCP. What you didn't want is now consumed by locals.

Next please ban milk powder so that mums and dads don't need to struggle with supplies.

Oh but they won't because there will be uproar in China and NZ is not gamed enough to do anything….. Therefore we will lose out

    • Dear China , Please ban iron ore too so I can stock up And sell later to highest bidder

      • +1

LOL yes I'm sure your SO will appreciate that very much. I'd also recommend a bit of coal too. you get free black paint to paint your walls when you stock up on coal.
